My 14 year old teenager is going through the "changes" and she got really bad acne on her entire forehead. Derma doctor said hormonal changes and nothing they can do but give her acne creams, but that seems to only make it worse. Does anyone know a good product that helps hormonal acne besides proactive?

What can I do next?

Try Bio-oil (sells in Walgreens for the scars) and use the Aloe Vera plant extract for the face - wash face with warm water then cold and not using dirty nails to mess with them will minimize it - Drink lots of water - and eat well balanced diet, no sodas, junk food.

Go to Clinique. try their Acne Solutions line. It is very mild and gentle, doesn't irritate or dry out the skin. It has anti-bacterial agents and controls the excess oil. Starter kit is $32.50. With any new skincare, it takes about two weeks to see results start to happen. Sometimes it gets worse before it gets better. With all the suggestions here, I would strongly suggest you try one at a time (whichever you choose) and give it two weeks. Trying one one day and another two days later, will make it worse. Go talk to an expert at your local Clinique counter!

I'm 30yrs old and ever since I got my Mirena IUD (2yrs ago), I have struggled with breakouts. I've been to the dermatologist and tried oral antibiotics and prescription creams. I've tried the Murad, Proactive, and pretty much every over the counter thing imagineable. About 2 weeks ago, I bought a new cleanser called Purpose at Walmart. It's "as gentle as water". I also bought a big bottle of Witch Hazel (you can find it by the peroxide and alcohol). It was like $2.00 at Walmart. I've been washing my face with the Purpose and then applying the Witch Hazel as a "toner". I must say...I've noticed a HUGE difference in my skin. However, I have to warn you...the witch hazel smell is pretty icky. LOL You have to get used to it. After about 5 minutes, I can no longer smell it, but it is pretty icky smelling. LOL Very worth it though. It's the cheapest facial routine I've had and it's working great. In the morning, before I put on makeup, I also use Cetaphil moisturizer. Good luck to her!!!

Sally Beauty Supply has an amazing line called A.B.H.(alpha beta hydroxy) by Beyond Belief. When my acne was out of control I used the the pore refining foaming cleanser, followed by the pore refining exfoliating scrub and the shine free toner and then the oil free moisturizer. The large bottles are about $7.99 each (they are all sold separately). So it is not a real expensive brand and it worked wonders for my skin. It would be worth a try. Hope you find what works!

I am a 50 year old and have had acne since my teens. I have tried everything including proactive, which worked for a while and dermatology, but did not want to take Accutane after reading the warnings. Last year I came across www.acne.org and tried their wash, treatment and moisturizer. My face has been clear for the first time since puberty. You can order the trial/travel size first if you just want to try the product. The upside of oily skin (I have no scarring) is that at 50 I have very few wrinkles and people tell me I look much younger than I am. P.S. Watch out for perfumes and hair products if you have sensitive skin they can also cause a break out.

Try the AVON clearskin or the new clearskin professional line. My daughter is 13 and it helps. The nice thing about AVON is complete money back guarantee. Nice with todays economy- even if you try it for 2 weeks and you want to return it. Of course teenage acne is different from adult. Watch the sugars and salt intake also that hormone thing. As far as Proactive just watch getting auto billed & auto shipped month after month (worked at a credit card company for 8+ years and that is a big dispute. Go on the AVON website & you can locate a rep near you.

Honestly, I've been using an all natural method on my 11 year old who is just getting hormonal acne and it is working great. I mix equal parts of tea tree oil and lavender oil and use a cotton ball and wipe it over the effected area. hope this helps!!

In a previous post that another mom listed (for herself), someone suggested dabbing rubbing alcohol on the spots.

I have struggled with acne since I was about 13 and still do today........ So I gave it a try. It does seem to help manage acne better than anything else I've tried. And I have pretty much tried EVERYTHING! (Over the counter products, washes, masks, prescriptions, dermatoligist rx's, acutane, proactive, etc. You name it, I've tried it with very little to NO success.)

Just took my 15 year old to the derm last night. He's all ready scaring so to stop the cycle, she put him on an antibiotic, she also prescribed a face wash and cream. On the cream it says it can make the acne worse for a couple weeks but then will clear it up. I regret doing anything sooner because of the scars he all ready has.

Nothing works better than Retin-A. You need a dermatologist's prescription for it, but I swear by it. I also like erythromycin (sp?) refrigerated paste--also requires a prescription from the dermatologist, but well worth it. As a bonus, because these are medications, you only have to pay your copay to buy them and they end up being less expensive than many over-the-counter treatments.

Make sure she see's the creams through, I know I tend to want immediate results. Most all treatments make it worse at first, before it gets better. Because they are acne already to starting to form, and treatment will speed up the process of them popping out.

Don't not over wash or treat. Never go to bed without washing. Make sure any make-up or creams she uses is oil free.

Hello, what your daughter needs is a deep cleansing facial, a real one with enzymes with the steam to break up dead skin and it makes it easier for extractions. Also she should be using a medicated line to control her acne. If you would like for me to refer you someone that does them in cooper city, I can give her her name, she is great and if you ever in the Orlando area you can call me, I have been doing facials for 17 years and they corrective facials, not the fluff ones, so you have to be careful on where you go to make sure they do good deep cleansing, not a peel or microdermations, she needs to be cleaned out, so if you have any questions you are welcome to either email me or call me. my email is ____@____.com or call me at ###-###-#### and I can answer other questions that you might have, dont let all these companies sell you there products that wont work, i can recomend you Control Corrective, i have been using this line for acne for a long time, its not expensive and it works.. so call me and i can send you a few samples and if you like them then i can send you the products, a good cleanser, toner and a spot treatment would be the best for her. so good luck

I took Accutane as a teenager. It's expensive, but insurance did pay for it. It wasn't fun going through it--my skin got very dry (I was also using Retin-A so maybe that was the reason). But the results were worth it. I never really had problem with acne after that. My brother took it too and was successful.

My girls are 12 & 14. They wash regularly. They do not drink soda often. They have had the same problem. What we have found that works is the acne creams that are high in benzoyle peroxide. The one they both like the most is made by clean and clear. It is about $6.00 at wal-mart. When it is not available, we have bought other products and the girls have not complained. However here is my only other advice.... The peroxide will bleach there clothes and your wash clothes and towels. They only put it on when there hair is pulled back and there clothes do not matter. I bought cheap white washcloths to put next to the sink as well. If there is a little bit of cream on there hands and they do not wash there hands well, my purple washcloth now has a bleach mark. If they take a shower and have wet hair and put on cream and got ot bed there pillow case now has a bleach mark. I have experienced great results.

I was in my 30's and still had horrible cystic acne. I tripped on an article about women being allergic to the hormones they put in milk. I stopped drinking milk and having milk products. My acne cleared up. no more huge painful zits. I now only drink organic milk (yep double the price) .
I'm still pissed that I spent years and lots of money on different meds, creams, getting painful shots. Not one doctor ever said anything about a possible reaction to milk hormones.
Not sure if this will help your daughter out but it's worth a shot. Good luck.

I started getting adult acne two years ago and I tried everything from the dermatologist prescriptions to ProActive. Last year I decided to try Neutrogena Skin ID, and it really works! My daughter just turned 15 and she uses it as well. It is much gentler then ProActive. When I used ProActive it bleached all my shirts that my face touched, and all of my pillow cases. Skin ID doesnt do that. They have a website and from there you can order the product. I highly recommend it!! Good luck!

I use cinnamon and honey. Equal mix of each. It works. I use it on my kids and myself. Put it on at night, you can band aid it so it doesn't get all over the bed sheets. You can wash it off in the morning.
