Girl Scouts - Daisy's

Has anyone had experience with the Girl Scouts, specifically the 5 yr old group, Daisy's? I was wondering if I should sign my daughter up or not. What exactly do they do when they meet? Is it once a week, week nights or weekends? I understand there is no fundraising at this level, but was just curious about what they do.

What can I do next?

Hi K.,
My daughter loved Daisy's. We met every other week after school. There, they learned social skills, did crafts, and did several field trips: fire department, police department, Henry's Ice Cream, etc. It's a great way for your daughter to meet other girls her age. There are several other activities that are offered through the local Girl Scout council that are not offered to other organizations. Example, Father and Me dinners and dances, plays at a discount, Disney on Ice at a discount, just to name a few. In the summer, there are many Day Camps and Evening Camps that your daughter can attend for more adventure and fun.

I have an almost 10 year old who is now a jr. in the Girl Scout organization. And, I have nothing but absolute Praise for the organization.
We started as Daisy's in Bend, Oregon. The leader there was wonderful, she did so many activites.(camping, Christmas caroling, cooking projects, diffrent country projects.)
Each troop has a diffrent meeting time and place. And all activities are usually outlined for you. Each meeting they are usually working as a group to earn a patch. But the basic concept is they help develop strong girls. Again, I have nothing but praise.

You might want to also look into princess guides (formerly Indian Princesses) available through the YMCA once she starts kindergarden--it's a father/daughter organization that does both a fall and spring campout--they meet once/month at a member's house and do a craft--they learn "core" values (it's Christian-based)--they have a father/daughter dance around Valentine's Day--very good for some one-on-one time with fathers and their kids--it's also available for boys once they start kindergarden as well (adventure guides)

Girl Scouts is a great organization. But you need to be in a good troop. some troop leaders do more than others. My daughter went through Brownies and loved it. I do feel that Brownies on up is much more beneficial than Daisys. If you don't decide to put her in this year, I would put her in Brownies next year.

My daughter was in daisy's last year. We met every other wednesday. We would meet and do arts n crafts or play games in the backyard. Activities would be arranged for certain wkends inorder for the girls to earn their badges. I wasnt too impressed w/the organisation so we quit. Brownies is alot better.

K., I recently attended a Girl Scout/Daisy recruitment meeting in our area. There was only one other mom there with a 5 year old, so I do not know if we will have the interest in our area. However, I agree with the other mom who wrote, generally GS is a great organization and the troops are what the leader them. What area do you live in? Maybe we can get into a troop together if you are close. YOu can email me at ____@____.com
