My nephew is twelve years old and my mother and I are both at a loss for what to get him for Christmas. He LOVES wrestling but his father is really against him watching it. He also loves video games but he is over-weight and his father is trying to get him more active. Does anyone have any suggestions? What do 12 yo boys like?
Thanks,
Barbara

I agree with the kirate or some martial arts class gift certificate. Just go online and research studios in your area and see what they offer. It will make dad happy that it is not wrestling and that he is getting some exercise. He will also learn self respect and discipline. Good luck!!!

I agree w/ the DDR! I have seen kids go crazy with it. They also have video games out now that are interactive like boxing, football, snowboarding...that should get him off the couch and moving!! Merry Christmas!

to keep in the spirit of getting active, what about a membership at a ymca (or other multi-activity center)? we have a new one near us with lots of different options for moving around. that way he can choose which activity might interest him most....swimming, climbing wall, basketball, volleyball, track, weights. or a gift cert to dick's sporting goods - he can pick out his own gift, but chances are it will involve getting active.

Hi B B,
Try asking the parents on what to get him. I did that with my nephew who is 11. Last year, I got all of the kids a gift certificate to Toys R Us. They loved it because they got to go and pick out what they wanted.

My son has the same problem of needing to be active. H'es 12 also. He's into Pokemon cards and a few other board type games. He's also into football and currently into playing in the snow. I know its all they want to do is video games and TV alot of times. He loves it when people give him giftcards (if this is something you'd want to do) and then he could spend it himself, preferrably to some place that does not have video games. Its hard as they get older to know what to get them.

How about roller blades, sports equipment, or even those sneaker skate things, that I do not know what they are called. Skateboard, bike, or what about signing him up for something. Karate is a little expensive, but if you and your mom split it, it may not be so bad and they do offer a free class to try out before enrolling. Swimming is another great form of excercise. My mother-in-law is big on getting my daughter invlved in different activities, classes etc. And because of her, she has tried quite a few in her short 4 years.

Ok, so they all like video games....I know of one that exercises their bodies as well...it's called DDR...Dance Dance Revolution...it can be bought for most any game system or to attach directly to tv. It's a mat on the floor that the feet are used to control. Their steps play the games on tv, so they get plenty of exercise. Go on ebay or online for the biggest variety. W.

Hi,

How about a magazine subscription. Find out what he likes. National Geographic is always interesting plus a great tool for school

My son is 11 and he has the same problem of being over weight and not very active. He loves video games and last year I got him what is called "Dance Dance Revelution". ( DDR) He still plays it.He loves it. Also, the Eye Toy has some cool games. There are alot more games now where the kids have to get up and move around to play. Moms can do it too and it's pretty fun!! ;)
