I'm looking for a thank you gift idea for my in-laws who stayed with our kids while we were on vacation in Mexico. They already have so much. They are taking a trip to New York City in April and I was thinking of some kind of NY guide, but I haven't checked into that. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I don't have any ideas for a New York themed gift idea, but you could always go with a mexican themed gift basket. You could fill a basket with chips, salsas, margarita mix, etc...stuff like that. Just an idea!

Hi G.,

Not sure what your budget is, but how about tickets for a show, tour or dinner?

Good luck!

Completely agree with the moms who recommended something personal such as a scrapbook album or photo book or something else with the grandkids pics in it. Maybe you could also include some of their artwork? That's what always seems to work best for my parents who dont' need anything but always seem to do so much.

Oh, what is New York without theater!! If you can afford it, tickets to a popular show is perfect (well, for me, anyway). Tickets to anything, sporting events, bands, book readings, TV audience shows, excursion trips, the Empire State Building, etc. are all possibilities! Everything is in New York, ALL the time! Have fun!! A free trip to Macy's is an adventure so a gift card would be perfect! Truly, it is like NO Macy's anywhere else!

Hi G.,

Sometimes a homemade thank-you card from your children is all that it takes to make a grandparent's heart swell....and if it were me I would just be so thankful you gave me the opportunity to spend time with my grandchildren.

I think getting tickets for a play, museum or a gift card to a nice restaurant in NYC would be a nice idea.

G.,

I had trouble buying presents for my husband's grandparents who were very wealthy. They would always be very gracious about what we gave them, but I felt like what we gave them was always something they could just go pick up themselves. So I started getting them personalized things with the kids' pictures on it. If you have pictures taken at JCPenney or some other studios, you can use their professional pictures and have the kids faces on mugs, blankets, you name it. If you want to use your own pictures, places like Walgreens and Walmart have a great selection of stuff you can have your kids pictures put on - puzzles, tins, clocks, clothes, etc.

Good luck,
S.

based on the NY idea, you could also:

Get a gift card for a restaurant in NY or a carriage ride in central park? Or another fun touristy thing they may want to do while they are there?

HI G.,
Same question here, is there a spending limit? I do know that you can buy a 1-3 day bus pass. The 3 day is 125.00. The bus system is excellent in that it stops at every stop at 15 min. intervals. They take a complete circle of NYC hitting all of the attractions. Empire STate building, ground zero, battery park, ellis island (statue of liberty), little italy, central park. It's wonderful! And to get home, just stay on the bus until you're at your stop again. The buses are open top too, so on a nice day sitting top-side you get a terrific tour of the city. If you want to donate toward thier room, rooms are extremely expensive in NY. Save buying tickets for shows till they get to the TK box on times square, tickets are half price for shows. You can get Yankee's game tickets depending on the season. It's tough to get to a game because the subways are jammed for games, it's a bit confusing. Or you could send a welcome basket directly to theirr hotel to arrive the day that they do, food is entirely too expensive, so a cheese, wine or fruit basket is always nice to have in your room.

Not knowing what you want to spend....
Find out where they are staying...what is close, maybe get them dinner at the restaurant in their hotel. If there is a recommended restaurant close, find out from the hotel, and pay for a dinner there.
If they like wine, have a bottle of wine waiting in the room for them when they get there with strawberries, or a meat and cheese tray?
If you wanted to spend more, if they like the theatre, get them ticket to a show and give them a thank you card with the show and will call window location in it....they are pretty spendy though.
Pay for a horse and carriage ride around central park? Get tickets for the Smithsonian?
There are so many options, depending upon what your budget allows.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

You might consider a Gift Card towards a Restaurant Chain, or Department Store so they can choose what to get. Like TGIF or Macy's (or towards a salon or spa item)

I've found a great gift for those who seem to have everything is something personal. Go through your photos and make a small scrapbook or photo album with special pictures of your children for them, something along those lines. Every time I've given a gift such as this to my parents or grandparents it has been cherished, bragged about and put on display.

Worth a shot I think. And if you still feel that isn't enough, go with a scrapbook AND another gift, such as tickets to a show such as other moms have suggested. Between the two, you should get a hit.

Good luck!

I don't know how much you want to spend, but what about a giftcard to a restuarant in New York City. Or tickets to a museum in New York. I think it would be fun to give something for their trip.
