Getting Rid of the Urine Smell When Puppy Has an Accident

Hi, I need some ideas on what will get the urine smell out of the carpet when my 3 month old puppy has an accident in the house. I read that vinegar will take out the stain, and I thought it said it will also take out the smell, but I seem to smell the urine now. I have had the pup for about three weeks and thought the vinegar/water mixture was working well, but now I am not so sure, or maybe I'm so paranoid about the smell I'm smelling something that isn't there?? thanks in advance for any advice/ideas!

Hey P., we just had our carpets cleaned and they told us that when the dog pee's on the carpet to pour white vinegar on the area. It wont harm the carpet and the dogs do not like the smell. Hope this helps! :)

Try rubbing alcohol!! Pour it on full strength to the area while it is still wet. I have been married nearly 50 years and have had pets all along the way. It will also remove urine smell from a mattress if used immediately, while the area is still wet. Pour it on generously, I always went to just a little outside the urine circle. That way the whole area is covered. Once the alcohol evaporates, so does the smell. L. W.

I found the best recipe on ebay and it works great! You use 12 ozs. Hydrogen Peroxide, 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda, and 1/2 tsp. AJAX Orange Dishwashing Liquid and mix together well. All you do after that is saturate the area all the way around and let dry. It cleans all the way through the padding and takes the scent and stain completely out so the puppy will not go back there. You may want to test a little on your carpet before but I have off white Berber and once dry it is like nothing ever happened there. Now I just need a recipe for dirty kiddos! Good Luck!

Urine takes 5-7 years to break down. You can not get rid of the smell without breaking down the urine crystals. Chem-Dry has a product that we can apply called PURT (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) that breaks down the urine crystals in 2 days. It is an AMAZING product. If you need more info, please feel free to call my office Cornerstone Chem-Dry at ###-###-#### or email me at ____@____.com

Have a great day!

Arm & Hammer makes a carpet cleaner product for pet stains. I've only been able to get it at pet stores, and it works great. It also keeps puppy from re-soiling the same spot.

Hi P., I have always used an amonia and dishsoap mixture. All you do is find a good spray bottle and add 1 cup of amonia. 1 cup of dish soap, and 1 cup of water. Apply it to the stain and clean up. My carpet is white and all of my stains are gone. I also use this on my laundry and haven't had one single problem. I hope this works!!!

If you're like me, you'd probably prefer to use something natural and less harsh. Baking soda is an excellent odor absorber in a pinch. For our house, I use Odo-Ban (available at Sam's Club). It will neutralize odors, discinfect and is non-toxic. I use it in laundry, cleaning and general freshening. It even neutralizes the smell of cat urine! Good luck!

The best thing I've found is to pour as much water as you think the accident was then blot that up. You can then add one of the odor products. Mamawil

I highly recommend Nature's Miracle. You can get it at PetSmart or Petco. White bottle with a red top, it has enzymes in it that remove the smell for both you and the puppy (very important!). We still use it on all of our carpet spots from the dog or whatever else ends up on there. We used it with the dog when he was a puppy and it even got out a really gross stain from an upset puppy tummy incident.

I have been raising puppies for YEARS and have found two off-the-shelf products that work WONDERS!! One is available at PetsMart and is called Nature's Miracle. The other one is available at almost any grocery store. It is made by Woolite and is Oxy2 Carpet Shampoo for Pets. It comes in a two-can canister and is great stuff! There is this liquid stuff that they sell at your local Sam's Club, that stuff is great. I comes in a clear jug, and smells heavenly. I cant remember the name of it, but if you ask the sales clerk I'm sure they will know that you are talking about. One jug of that also makes about 20 spray bottles, you have to delute it. I used to use it in my kids diaper pails also.

Dear P.,
Use Nature's Miracle and get a black light. We discovered that the smell was not going away and the black light helped us see that the little stinker had splashed some on the wall.
You can get both at Petco.

Blot the stain with vinegar and then sprinkle a little baking soda on it while it is still damp (NOT WET) and let sit for at least 15 min. Vacuum it up and that should take the stain and smell. Good Luck

P.,

I have to throw in "my 2 cents" for Sol-U-Mel, too!! The great thing about it is that it is SAFER for your puppy than most commercially available products. And if it's safe for the puppy, you'll also appreciate that it's SAFER for those Grandbabies!!

I can be reached at ____@____.com if you want more info on all the products!! (We've been using them for 2 years now.)

Good Luck with the 5th round of "potty training"!! :)

Hi P.,
I use Sol-U-Mel. I put it in my laundry when I wash my son's sheets. He is a bed wetter and nothing else has ever gotten the smell out. I am sure if it works for human it would work for puppy.

Nature's Miracle...You can only get it at Pet Stores. It's a little expensive if you have to use it on a regular basis, but it's absolutely worth it. Saturate the area, going a little beyond the perimeter of the stain, and let it work it's magic!

I used straight white vinegar on the spot, and it worked as long as I applied it immediately. Once it was set, though, it was another matter. Invest in the pee-pads they now sell and teach the little darling to use them until he is a big boy and can let you know he wants to go outside. After SEVERAL puppies, I now have hardwood floors.

i have 4 dogs, used to be 5, and we have had our share of accidents! we use nature's miracle, which is a mixture of rubbing alcohol and some cleaning enzymes. you just blot up as much stain as you can and then soak it with nature's miracle, allow it to try on it's own, DON'T blot it up, let it soak down into the padding - smells are gone!

If you don't have a Bissel Little Green Machine, I highly recommend you get one. They cost about $60 bucks at Walmart, and they do a great job of sucking all the urine out of the carpet. Then, when you use a cleaner afterward, there is only a trace amount you have to neutralize. It sounds gross, I guess, but when our dog was a puppy, we'd use our Little Green Machine, and then sniff the carpet at close range. Even before we used cleaners, we smelled no urine. We have a white carpet and no stains. Hurray! And good luck. Puppies are great, but they're a lot of work!

THere are products out there that will help. One thing to do is to pour the product on the spot[s] and let it set. You do not pat it up or shampoo it up. IT helps break down the urine enzymes. It is helpful to have a "black light" so you know where the spots are. Another idea is to contact a local carpet cleaning company and have them come out and pre-treat before they clean.

There's a great product called "Nature's Miracle". I buy it at Petsmart/Petco - somewhere like that. (There are a couple of other products by different names that do the same thing.) The neat thing about this product is that it has an enzyme (I believe) in it that actually eats the left-over bacteria from the stain - which is what the odor results from. We own rental property, so I have dealt with this issue in every way/shape and form you can imagine. This is the only product or remedy I've ever found that truely/permanantly works. I've saved tile floors that looked great, but had urine soaked down into the grout, as well as carpet that looked presentable, but again had the pad underneath it permeated by the urine over time. I've used it in my own house, too, when we got our puppy. You just saturate the area with it and it does it's thing.

Good luck!

Vinegar I was told is the wrong thing to use. It attracts them to the same place. I used to use it for spots of other things and I think it actually bleached the white carpets to yellow spots. There is a solution at Pet Smart called Spot Out I think and it comes in a gal container but also spray bottles. Well worth it. I spot but I also have a steam machine that I clean carpets almost every week with my day care. There is no odor and the pet does not go back to it. My house never smells of urine. Actually poop is better to clean the urine. Good Luck G. W
