My mom's cat was sprayed by a skunk last night. The cat is fine but still smells really bad. Just wondering if there were things she could try that wouldn't hurt the cat but get rid of the smell.

What can I do next?

The formula below will work but will also leave you pets skin very dry and may cause skin issues. Make sure his diet has plenty of Omega 6 and you use a good shampoo after that treats dry skin and hot spots.

Has anyone suggested a tomato juice bath?

a tomato juice bath is in order. The tomato juice neutralizes the smell.

If you can, give the cat a bath in tomato juice, not v8, tomato juice. My sisters dogs were sprayed and it worked on them, I know how cats hate baths though....good luck!

Tomatoes, tomtoes, tomatoes! Bathe him, soak him, whatever it takes! Atleast that's what I've been told works! Good luck!

Had a dog that got sprayed by a skunk.. Did the whole Tomato juice i thought she just ended up smelling like tomato and skunk. I went to the vet and got something called Skunk Off.. It worked wonders. Just check with your vet they should have something there to take away the smell... I would definately recommend something like that instead of having to possibly wash the cat twice.

D.,
I thankfully have never had to do this myself, but I have heard that tomato paste will cut the smell. I don't think that would be harmful to a cat, probably pretty messy though, but you may want to check with a vet first. Good luck to your Mom with that!!!

My dog has been sprayed by a skunk twice in the last year. Unfortunately there is nothing you can really do about it. We washed her several times with all kinds of things, tomato juice, baking soda, vinegar, etc. We also shave her down. She got sprayed about a month ago and I can still smell it on her snout!!!

Getting Rid Of Skunk Smell
Skunk smell removal formula:

1 quart of peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
2 tablespoons dishwashing liquid

(can double or quadruple recipe as needed for size of dog)

Mix ingredients in OPEN container, pour on the dog. The odor will disappear almost immediately. It *really* works. It's far more effective than tomato juice, etc.

*WARNING*: Don't try to store the solution in a closed container or make it up ahead of time. It creates a chemical reaction that only lasts a few minutes but it throws off massive quantities of oxygen so if you try to bottle it, it will explode.
