Getting Rid of Hairspray in My Hair

Hi Ladies,

I've had short, spiked hair for the past 20 years. Just this past year, I've finally agreed that I would look more feminine to the wishes of my kids. My hair is a medium thickness. I've been using the extra hold hairsprays sold by salons because no other sprays seem to hold my style. Well, whenever I wash my hair, it seems I cannot get out all of the spray. I've washed my hair in the sink, had a friend wash my hair, used conditioners, rinses, but nothing gets it perfectly clean. There seems to always be film left in it. Can anyone recommend something that works?

Thanks again,

M

Thanks for all the great advice. Wow, I'm so glad to know that I am not the only one who washes her hair daily and that this is something that happens to many. I'll be trying all of your suggestions! Thanks a billion:)

Make a paste out of baking soda and water while you're in the shower and use that after you shampoo.

Use a clarifying shampoo. Or try Dawn dish soap.

this may sound nasty and smelly, but I have quite a bit of frizzy hair and I use a ton of hairspray and gel. I have to strip it all the time to make it feel clean....... But get you a bowl of water and put about a cup of vinegar in it and rinse your hair over and over in it, then rinse it more under running water to remove the smell and shampoo and conditioner as usual. your hair will feel very clean and washed when you are done. Don't scoff until you try it :)

Try washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo everyday. It strips out all of the build up styling products leave behind. Depending upon the level of buildup it may take a few days to a couple weeks to see the results you want. Once everything gets striped out, you should only have to use the clarifying shampoo once or twice a week to keep the buildup from accumulating. If you use it to often it'll start to strip the natural oils from your hair.

I use a lot of hairspray and I find that I have to wash it twice to get the hairspray out. I use a clarifying shampoo for the first wash. The one I use is Pantene. Then I wash with my regular shampoo (which is whatever shampoo you prefer.)

I also get my head wet and wash my body while letting my hair soak for a couple of minutes before beginning to wash it.

First wash it with antibacterial soap before washing it with shampoo. Also dont use anyhing but a clear shampoo. Clear shampoos strip hair of anything in there. Make sure you scrap your scalp with your finger tips and scrub well.

A vinegar rinse will do the trick. But it wont smell very nice, but it gets rid of the build up

use baking soda before you wash your hair. my hair dresser told me to use that for hairspray build up. and my mothers hair dresser does that to her hair every week when she goes to have her hair done. and it works wonderful.

Hi there. Add a tablespoon or so of baking soda to your shampoo and it will wash it all out!

Good luck!

I still have my "80's" hair with gummy hairspray and use Tresemme clarifying shampoo (on sale at Meijer this week!!) and have been told to put a little baking soda in the shampoo bottle. I wash my hair everyday. I used the vinegar too, that worked well.

I never tried this but my former boss, who used to be a hairdresser, kept a box a baking soda in her bathroom. Once a week, she would shake a little onto her head, then get in the shower and wash first with it and then do her regular shampoo/conditioner.

Malibu, malibu, malibu. IF that still doesnt work then you may want to try some of the detox shampoos. Malibu also used to make a product called Hairspray Away. I haven't seen it in a while though so I'm not sure if they still make it. You will probably want to go to a salon to have this done. If you are in the Flint area, I am a hairdresser at The Incredible You at the corner of Dodge and Saginaw in Mt Morris.

I would say to brush before shampooing, to loosen the spray, and use a clarifying shampoo
