Getting Pregnant with PCOD

I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Disease June '06. My Dr prescribed Avandia to breakup the cysts and I was able to get pregnant 2 months later, I now have a beautiful 1 yr old boy. My question is has anyone had difficulty getting pregant the second time? My Dr. said I was "cured" and there were no longer any cysts. My insurance will no longer cover any "female infertility" issues. I have been off the pill now for 2 months and we are trying again. But I have not had a period in 10weeks. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank all of you who have responded, I greatly appreciate all of the advise. I noticed in the past two weeks I had been having a lot of abdominal cramping, I thought it was the cysts. After talking to a friend, she suggested I take a pregnancy test. I am pregnant. I didn't think it would be this easy to get pregnant the second time, since the first time was so difficult. Thanks again for all of the advise.

Hi S.,

Congratulations on your baby!!
I never took Avandia.

I took shots - perganol and did IUI's unsuscesfully. I had several m/c's and an ectopic - where I lost my left tube and ovary.
After about 1yr of this and having given up on infertility - but STILL taking metformin - we got pregnant with our dd, who is now 22months.

We decided to try right away for a second since you're most fertile after a baby so... 3 months later we were pregger with #2 and my daughter and son are 11 months appart, they will be the same age for 2 weeks :)

We figured we were done, we were no longer taking metfomin and got an IUD. Well, 4 months later with an IUD in place, we got pregnant again!!!!
We're 17 weeks, 3 under 3 :)
My dd will be 2yrs 3months, my son 16 months when this baby is born in November :)

Talk about unexpected. I would say if you were "cured" then you should be pretty fertile!!!

I still can't believe it, we tried for 6 years!!!!

Best,
Amy

I, too, have PCOS and tried for 3 1/2 yrs to get PG with our daughter. I took Glucophage and Clomid for 4 cycles with no luck, then changed fertility drs and got on glucophage and Femera (post menopausal breast cancer drug) It took us 3 cycles but it finally worked. We are "trying" to get pg with #2 without seeing the fertility dr. My dr also said we would probably have an easier time getting pg the 2nd time, but dd is almost 2 and we never used any birth control after her birth. I have had periods about every 4-6 weeks, which never happened before I got pg. When I wasn't having periods, they put me on Provera to jump start ovulation. I would look into the provera, most insurances will cover the drug because it isn't used just to promote fertility. I would explain to your dr. that your insurance won't cover female infertility anymore, they usually know how to word things so that it would be covered. GOODLUCK!!! :)

I was diagnosed with PCOD shortly after my first daughter was born in 2003. My husband and I wanted to start trying for baby #2 about a year after our first. After about 2 1/2 years of trying and dozens of birth control pill to regulate my cycles I had enough with my family dr. I went to a endocrine specialist and told me pretty much to give it up, but I just couldn't. I found another doctor and she put me on Glucophage after 2 months of taking that I was pregnant. I had a normal period after the first month of taking Glucophage, I was not used to that for 4 years. Once I found out I was pregnant the doctor took me off the glucophage and said to wait a little after I had my second daughter 5/2007, to see if I would start regular cycles again, but that did not happen. I had to go back on the glucophage and have had a normal cycle every month. good luck!!!

Hang in there. We are still trying to get pregnant. I have PCOS too and stopped b/c in December. I’m still taking Prometrium the first 10 calendar days in hopes to trigger my system. It does cause a “period” but I think it’s just a withdrawal bleed. We are trying for #2 and #1 happened very easily…Good Luck. I’ll be checking back in hopes for info that can help us too!

I also have PCOS after glucophage and 1 round of clomid I was able to conceive. I am also curious about when we try for #2. Has your dr. said anything about glucophage, my doc said it helps you to ovulate. May be worth asking?
