My husband and I are trying to get pregant again but are having a more difficult time the second time around. Have any mothers experienced this same problem? With our first child, we got pregnant right away, this time it has already been 4 months and I am still not pregant yet.

What can I do next?

Hi Sadie. I too had a hard time getting pregnant after my first son was born. I didn't have any trouble with getting pregnant with him at all so it became very frustrating. My doctor thought it was from the birth control I was using after he was born. I was nursing him and at the time the only thing that was safe to use was depo prevera. I used that for about a year before I stopped getting the shots. It took me a year to get pregnant with my second child, a daughter. I didn't have anymore trouble after that and I now have 4 children. In fact, I got pregnant with my third child when my daughter was only 8 months!! So give it a few more months and talk to your doctor about your concerns. Sometimes we want something so badly that it's hard when it doesn't happen right away. Good luck!

As we grow older it tends to get harder. Just hang in there and make sure you're not doing it daily except when your fertile. That way his count stays up. If a few more months go by, see your doctor and have some tests done. Good luck, I hope you have a new bundle of joy soon!

Hi Sadie,
This happened to me as well, with our first I got pregnant right away (second try) but with our second it took 6 months. I bought ovulation tests and everything so we knew I was ovulating but no baby...so frustrating!

I went to the doctor after 6 months just to talk to her and she was very understanding, she said she knows when you are ready to be pregnant you want to be pregnant now :)

She gave me some options, suggestions and a referral to the specialist but said that since I came in and talked to her I would be back next month pregnant...and I was!

Sometimes it just takes more time with the second because we are so much busier taking care of the first kid and life is a little more stressful!

I know it's hard, try not to stress out too much and maybe just go talk to your doctor, sometimes getting your worries/concerns/frustrations off your chest may help and they might be able to give you tips/tricks you haven't thought of.

Good luck!

This happened to me. I got pregnant right away with my daughter, but it took me 5 months to get pregnant with my son. I was trying everything: temping, charting, using ovulation predictor kits, etc. It's harder when you already have a child because there isn't as much time for romance. :)

I also know it's really hard to hear, "It's only been 4 months" which is something that people like to say. 4 months feels like a long time! I know it's hard to be patient, because I was there! If you need to vent, or if you have questions or anything, let me know.

are yu charting? I found that my ovulation timing has changed. When we tried for our first, we were successful in one month. With our second try (our surving son) it took 2 months. The most important thing I've found out as I'm going to start this summer is to chart. My ovulation times are different than 3 years ago. I've been using fertily friend (free for basic membership) to chart the signs.

Check your meds, schedule an appointment with your doctor for preconception counselling and to ask your questions. All of the advice here is great.

I had to wait 8 months the second time, but eventaually it worked, I rack it up to my body just wasn't ready. I did have a friend though that could only stay pregant when taking a supplement of folic acid. She only had to take it until she was about 3 months along along with the prenatal vitimins but she is about to have her third. Folic Acid is natural and is good for you, its worth a try.

Hi Sadie,
I just saw an old Time Magazine today(Dec 2007) and the cover story was diet affecting fertility and conception. Did not read it, but maybe it might be helpful?????? You can probably get the article online in the Time archives.

Also on a side note for the future.........if you are looking for a gentle birthing method, I teach HypnoBirthing childbirth education. I used the method to birth both of my daughters. Check it out at www.YourPeacefulBirthing.com

Good Luck with everything!

Yep!
When I got pregnant with my daughter, it only took us 2 months. We are now trying and have been for almost a year.
Now that I look back, I wish I didn't wait so long to start trying again. I thought it would be easy again.
I just went to see my dr. and got a physical. She ran some blood work and I am getting a pelvic ultrasound tomorrow to make sure everything looks good.
I am also on a few websites that help you track your ovulation cycle. One is www.mycycle.com and the other is www.webmd.com.
Also, I am doing the ovulation kits to make sure I am ovulating.
Good luck!

I had trouble conceiving #3 while taking cox-2 inhibitors (Bextra, Celebrex, Vioxx) for arthritis. I stopped taking the meds and had a positive bHCG th next week. Check with your health care provider before stopping any meds. Good Luck!

I don't know your age but I know that at 31 I was trying to get preg too. I finally figured out that during my ovulating cycle which different months were more prevelant (I get cramps during this time) but we decided to have sex every single day for two weeks. This started one week after my period ended and that is what it took to get pregnant but it worked.

good luck and get to work LOL :)

4 months isn't a long time. You don't say how old you are, but fertility drops around age 35. I'd say relax and be patient for several more months, then see your doctor.

Hi there.. Here's my story.. I started trying for #2 in March 2006! My first daughter was born 4/23/04. Well I am now finally pregnant, probably got pregnant at the end of January 2008, but it pretty much took 2 years! Last year the doctor had me on clomid for 5 months straight, at the end of the 5 months (Sep 2007-ish) I got pregnant, but it miscarried very early, didn't stand a chance really. The 1st HCG reading was only like 9!! So then after that I decided that I was not going back on clomid, (I was up to 150 mg) and I would just gie my body and mind a rest and see a specialist and see what the other options are. One other thing I didn't mention is that after stopping the pill (march 2006) I still had not had a period by Aug 2006, so he gave me clomid then also to sorta jump start my system, well that didn't work. So he had to put me on prometrium a couple times just to make me have a period! Then in January 2007 my doctor did the hysterosalpingogram (not sure if I spelled that right-lol) since that is how I got pregnant the first time, it was RIGHT after that, but that didn't seem to work. So, in Feb 2007 ish is when I started taking clomid each cycle for 5 months, but my cycles were still really long (35-55 days).. It was all crazy! I know that I will NEVER go back on the pill, it just messes some people up bad! So, anyway after the miscarriage sept 2007 i only had 2 periods(a 44 day cycle and a 50 day cycle), then ended up pregnant - and this one is going good.. The 1st HCG reading was 1200 at aprx 4 weeks, then it just kept going way up just like it should (due date is OCT 31st).
