Getting My Baby to Drink Water

I just started solids last Saturday and I'm having trouble getting my daughter to drink water. I've tried two different sippy cups (Nuby and Born Free) and her bottle but she takes a couple of drinks and then purses her lips together and turns away. Just wondering if anyone has any tips that worked for them. I've tried bottled and tap water and different temperatures too.

What can I do next?

After trying many different types of cups, we found out that my daughter liked a straw sippy cup the best. And the water need to be ice cold from the fridge. Good luck.

She may be too young for a regular water bottle now, but my boys will only drink water out of my water bottle. I've tried the sippy cup thing, but they won't drink anything other than juice & milk from them. Maybe you could start with one of those pop top water bottles (obviously helping her and making sure the top is tightened on very securely) and push the pop top in a little bit so the flow isn't so fast. If she's anything like my two, she'll just want whatever you're having. Maybe if she thinks it's a big girl drink she'll take it that way. I hope it works for ya.

Water down her milk, she will get used to the lessening taste. My boys did not want water and that is how I did it.

At her age she may not need a lot of water yet.

hi M., most babies don't like water caus there is no flavor, my mom had told me to put a pinch of sugar, or an eye drop of vanilla and that worked for all 3 off my babies, and as time went on, i put less and less sugar and by then they were used to drinking it. Your nt going to put enough sugar to be bad for her just enough togive it a little bit of flavor. Jul

My husband and I always keep a cup of water nearby when we are at home, and a bottle of water with us when we are out and about. Both of my boys (now 3 and 2) became interested because they saw us drinking water all of the time (we like it cold, and they like it that way too - probably just because that is what they're used to). They began by taking sips from our big cups/water bottles when they were just infants, and now they like to have their own cups, and they have little water bottles for when we leave the house, too. Don't worry if your 6 month old isn't too interested yet. She should be getting all the fluid she needs from breastmilk/formula at this age. Just keep the water available and offer it. If she sees you drinking it all the time, she will probably show an interest eventually. One other tip, when my oldest was a year old, our pediatrician told us not to give juice, but stick to milk and water. So we have avoided juices so they don't need the sweetness all the time. Now that they are older and like quenching their thirst with water, I let them have diluted juice with lunch each day as a special "treat."

Just keep trying. she may not yet be ready, nor ready for a "sippy" cup. Each child is different. What I would do is just keep a baby bottle or sippy cup of water around where my children played or on the coffee table... for them to take when/if they had the hankering for it. Or try a straw cup....although she may not yet be old enough for it.

It's about letting them get used to it. Just don't force it. As long as she is still breastfeeding/on formula that's fine. Keep in mind, thatfor the first year of life, breastmilk/formula is the PRIMARY source of nutrition for a baby. So you don't want to fill up on water first.

Just please, do NOT add any juice or sugar or sugar based flavorings to the water. It is NOT needed. You don't want to start this "habit" in a young baby/child.

In time, she will segue into water as a part of her routine.

Good luck,
~Susan
