I was wondering a good way to clean a mattress. I have a pillow top mattress and am noticing that it is getting dirty where we lay on it. It is still a good mattress and I don't want to get rid of it. What can I do? Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

What can I do next?

You can have it "dry cleaned" by a company called Chem Dry I beleive. I have done this in Raleigh, and have not looked for a compnay here yet. But they have got to have similar services available.

Do you use a mattress pad and sheet? My in-laws have a pillow top mattress and use both a mattress pad and sheet and she (my mother-in-law) doesn't have any issues with having to clean it. Other than that, I don't know how to clean one...maybe contact a cleaner to find out.

Get real oxi clean - not the kind that's added to everything else. sometimes it does bleach a little.

Call a carpet/ apolstry cleaner. They may have some suggestions. We have a pillowtop mattress too, but we have a very thick mattress pad that we have on top of it. I would say get one of those.

I had the same problem with my pillow top. I used Resolve Multi-Fabric Cleaner (red spray bottle). It was about $3.50 and worked wonders. Stains came out easily and left the mattress smelling fresh. After you clean it, I would recommend getting a mattress pad to protect it in the future.

Hi A.,

I have a 14 year old pillow top and it only has one stain....but have always had a mattress cover on. Definitely, your best investment as far as easy to wash and sanitize.
As far as the stains, many of the cleaning products today have chemicals in them that as associated with breathing problems and other issues. You don't want to sleep every night and inhale in and absorb in, these nasty chemicals.
Check out my website with several great non-toxic cleaning products: www.shaklee.net/sowing4health/getclean
Also, the Nature Bright laundry boost works AWESOME !!
Good luck and God bless,
L.

I have heard that you can put a mattress out in the sun to clean it. You can vacuum it or clean it with products that you would use on other upholstered furniture. I haven't ever done any of these things. We keep a mattress pad on our mattress in order to protect it. The mattress pad can be put in the wash. On my children's beds I put a vinyl cover and a mattress pad to protect the mattress. Good luck.

You should ALWAYS use a mattress pad/cover. Bedding is a breeding ground for dust mites and other allergens. You should be removing and washing the pad with every other sheet change. I also recommend vacuuming your mattress periodically. For now, use a carpet/upholstery cleaner then go straight out and get a cover for your mattress! I recommend the Beautyrest ones, they are waterproof, but not plastic and work wonderfully, especially with kids around.

When I married my first husband he had a mattress that had stains on it, I used a shampooer on it, the one that has a hand held wand. I shampooed it early in the morning and then let it air dry. what ever was on it seemed to be gone and it smelled real nice. My g.daughter had an accident on my white double pillow top so I shampooed it and then when it was dry I sprayed lysol to make sure it was ok. The stain is gone and it looks ok again.
Don't forget to keep a mattress cover on it that way you can wash it regularly.

We have a pillow top mattress and it can be hard to find a mattress pad to fit. You can get mattress pads that just cover the top of the mattress (they don't have sides that fit around). This will help from here on out.

To clean the spots you already have I have used hydrogen peroxide to slightly bleach small areas. It takes several applications but is safe to use. You have to be careful because it will bleach your sheets. Also, vacuum your mattress about once every month or two and it will really help.

Good luck.
