Gestational Diabetes?

I know they say there isn't any signs of this but everyday I can't seem to get enough to drink. I mean, I'm beyond thirsty but nothing is satisfying. I drink my 64oz.'s a day but it just doesn't feel like I'm absorbing it or something. It's driving me crazy! And, first thing in the morning, I have to drink some apple juice or I can't stop shaking. Did anyone else have these signs and then got diagnosed with gestational diabetes? I should also mention that both of my maternal grandparents are diabetic.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks girls! I just was wondering since I have family members that are diabetic and extreme thirst is a sign of diabetes! Thanks again! I'll be sure to ask my doc and drink a gatorade in the meantime!

I was gestational diabetic with my first son (who is now 2 and a half) and I was never overly thirsty or shaky or had any signs that early on or ever that I was gestational diabetic. So I would say that signs or no signs you won't know until the tests come back. Also, for what it is worth, when I was diagnosed I was able to maintain my sugars with diet, only gained 17 lbs and the baby was perfect size (7 lbs, 13 oz)! good luck! And congratulations!!

Hi B.,
I was always thirsty throughout my entire pregnancy. Especially at night I would have to go to bed and force myself not to drink 5 glasses of water because if I did I wouldn't have been able to sleep. I didn't shake or anything so I don't know why you are doing that but maybe you should ask your doctor.

I did not have gestational diabetes but I did gain a lot of weight (70 lbs!).

I have a 22 month old daughter Avery. Congratulations!

As a nurse, this definetly sounds like some of the signs of diabetes. I would get in to see your doctor as soon as possible. Are you urinating a lot also? - because that is another one of the signs. Make sure that you are writing down your signs and symptoms, and keeping track of how you feel at different times of the day. You should probably write down what you are eating throughout the day also. This will give your doctor a better idea of what might be going on.
Hope this helps,
J.

Your body requires a lot more water when you're pregnant...it's normal to be thirsty like that. I was drinking all the time during my pregnancy (I always had something to drink with me). I also thought that I had gestational diabetes due to the shaking and being light headed, but the doc said that I was fine, my blood sugar was just a bit low. I drank juice and ate a little something whenever I felt like that and it went away. Just make sure you're eating regularly (something small every few hours) and you should notice a huge difference. Worked for me!

Hi I had gestational diabetes with 2 of my three pregnancies. with my last i was traveling with a big gulp full of ice water constantly I had a new doc who said it was to early to test for diabetes. SO I used a friends monitor and my sugar was way out of range. I called the doc next morning and told him my fasting number and 2 hour post meal number. had me tested at 15 weeks and sure enough I had it. So keep pestering the doc till they run the test. and then have them send you to diabetes education classs. usally you can control with diet. Good luck

i was drinking nearly a gallon of water a day it seemed at one point. i bet you are fine. and in the morning your body has been working all night on making the baby so of course you will feel fatigued when you get up. i used to get up in the middle of the night and eat bananas or peanut butter. or both. and always kept something to drink by the bed. also, regular water wouldn't quench my thirst sometimes so i would drink sparkling water and somehow it made me feel the refreshment i seemed to be craving.

Am thinking that the shaky in the morning means your blood sugar is low, which doesn't mean that you actually have g.d., because it would be natural to have low blood sugar when you haven't eaten for 10 hours. Drinking juice will shoot your blood sugar way up, so if you instead have a whole-grain cracker or some complex carb first off, it will raise blood sugar gradually, instead of spiking it, which could lead to a drastic drop again. Even if you don't have g.d., there's nothing wrong with avoiding sugar, eating every 2-3 hours with a bit of protein (cheese, peanut butter, egg, cottage cheese, yogurt) and some complex (whole grain) carbs, and walking for 20-30 minutes after your lunch and evening meals--which is probably what they'll tell you to do if you are diagnosed with g.d. But these are healthy eating habits anyway. Keep a log of your symptoms and what you ate when. If you still have probs, you might be able to convince your OB to test you before the 24 week (or is it 28 week) point.

I was really thirsty while preggo.. so I wouldn't say that alone is a sign. However, the shaking in the morning kind of bothers me. Does this happen any other time of day? Are you eating enough before bedtime? I think you should bring it up to your doc and see if you can get tested early for diabetes.

Good luck!

I would say talk to your doctor about it. I know I have been thirsty, too. I also get the shakes. I don't have gestational diabetes. My doctor told me that I should drink a gatorade a day because it is very common for pregnant women to have low blood sugar, which I get a lot, and also to have heart palpitations, which was the shakes for me. I am 32-weeks, perfectly healthy and healthy pregnancy, and I can guarantee you that I don't let a day pass without my gatorade-- it evens me out and makes me feel that much better. I buy the smaller ones. You still should talk to your doctor, but in the meantime, see what a gatorade will do for you! Good luck!

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. I had gestational diabetes and i was always thirsty couldnt get enough. I would contact them and have them do a glucose test, also go to your loval pharmacy and get ketone strips, little strips you pee on or dip in a cup of pee and if it changes colrs you have keytones which from what i was told is a good sign that you need to see your doctor.
