Gates to Contain My 16 Month Old..

..okay, I know that sounds bad, but my little monkey likes to run around our stair case (think "dog track") and since I am pregnant with #3, I need to be able to sit down for more than 20 seconds. Now before some smart alec says "close the door", there aren't any except on the playroom.

Are there any EASY pressure gates that can contain a active toddler yet are easy for adults to navigate? Any that can be moved easily? I was thinking of "retract-a-gate" for the bottom of the stairs...anyone like that one?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Are you talking about the "Kiddy Guard" gate? We have one at the top of our stairs and I love it. It's perfect - they can't climb it since it's thin, but it's safe for stair use. Honestly I just said this afternoon that I wish I had just invested in 2 of those at the beginning. They are pricey - about $100, but they are there and yet out of the way when you don't want them. They have options for attaching just about anywhere too and are safe for stairs. I have one that works at the bottom of my stairs, but it's just not as good. It's the one that is also cloth and yo can adjust it to be wider. It is my second favorite and has nice features, but the KiddyGuard is the best. My 20 month old can hold on to the top of the other gate and step up on the first step. But that puts pressure on the pressure mounting and it has slipped before with my son landing under it. They couldn't do that with the Kiddy Guard. I have a couple plastic adjustable ones too, but they pulled paint off my doorways and are bulky to store.

I'm not sure if you need a specific type of gate, but we have a Safety 1st 23" Wood security gate (cheapie $12.00 from Toys R Us) that works great. We can move it all over the place depending on where we need it and it stays in place very well.

We love our retract-a-gate (had to get it for a 7' wide opening). We also like that you can pivot it around for different openings.

We bought this gate to put on our son's bedroom doorway, though I think we bought it through the babies r us website.

We've had it for 2 years. It is sturdy and easy to use. Since it is taller, it was hard for our son to be able to undo the latch and lift the gate to open it. We haven't moved it so I don't konw how well it would hold up if your intention is to move it from one room to another frequently. The do sell extenders so that it will fit a variety of doorways.

Just remember you can use pressure-mounted at the bottom of the stairs, but not at the top! ;-)
