I'm sorry to beat this into the ground. I received some awesome responses and i thank every one of you for those. We cover mostly how to get rid of the excruciating pain i was in last wednesday. We also covered my fear about my upcoming surgery (next monday)however, this part 2 question has to deal with my recovery. Not right after surgery but the rest of my life. Will my body react to foods in a different manner since the gallbladder isn't there anymore? Someone said i might be more gassy after eating fresh fruits and vegetables? (which is what i eat most of the time)somebody else said their bowel movements (sorry to be so graphic, but i want to know) were more constant and very soft. Somebody else told me their friend kept losing weight because her food went right through her because her gallbladder wasn't there to store the fat. Do any of these things make sense to anybody out there. I promise when i return from my surgery i won't post anymore questions. The doctors just tell me the science of it all, none of my doctor's have had their gallbladder removed. Thank you in advance for your reply.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's M. s. Here to tell you my gallbladder surgery is over. Yipee!! Surgery was last monday, everything went as planned. I thought i was going to wake up and be ready to eat anything handed to me but that wasn't the case. I went 2 weeks of not eating before the surgery just because i didn't want that horrible pain to come back that when i woke up i still refused to eat. I went home tuesday and my sister came to live with me to help out with my girls (ages 4 and 7). Here is it a week later and i'm back in the office, trying to get back to normal. We are taking a long car trip thursday so i hope i'm up for it because i do most of the driving. Anyway, i'm still not sleeping very good and i feel a lot of pressure after i eat a small meal (like a bowl of oatmeal)i guess that's normal and i'll just have to give my stomach time to adjust to not having a gallbladder. Now i'm back to being scare to eat anything for fear of being in pain. I see my surgeon on wednesday to remore the staples so i hope he will have answers for me then. Anyway, a big thanks to everybody for all of your wisdom and opinions and sharing your own stories with me to help me cope with what the strange things going on inside my body.

Gallbladder is involved in breaking down fats and oils. Without it you will presumably need to take bile salts supplements and enzymes to handle those foods. Otherwise fats and oils will cause gas and pain and fruits and veggies would be some of the limited foods that wouldn't be a problem except maybe for the oily avocado. If there were a way available to treat the gallstones without removing the gall bladder I would personally opt for it. Hope you've gotten good input on this.

Hi M.:

It does take a couple weeks after the surgery for you body to adjust to not having the galblatter. However, I didn't have any problems with eating fruits or vegetables- I eat alot of them. Sometimes very greasy foods will make you run to the bathroom but- that would happen anyway. Hope your surgery goes well.

I had the same questions when I had my gallbladder removed back in 1998. From my past experience it took time. The first couple months, I had the gassy and fast bm's along with the heartburn that occurs after I ate some foods that didn't agree with my stomach, nothing bad that would send me to the the hospital. Usually, gas x worked great.
After a few months, I was fine. Ate the same foods as I did before I started noticing problems. I am the type of person, that would try to eat something and if it didn't settle well, I would try eating it again after a few weeks. For example, I only had one salad dressing that I could eat while I was pregnant and passing gallstones. Because of this, I would carry my own bottle in my purse to restaurants, I was very afraid that their brand would send me to the hospital for pain meds. After surgery, I slowly would try other brands of the same type or a different kind until I was okay to eat it. I hope this information has helped you.

Hi Michelle,

Been a long time since I came on this site and just saw you post! SO you have had your surgery by now and I am hoping you are all healed, you should be... with regards to your concerns, I personally think everyone's body reacts differently... I for example, have had no problems at all and it has been quite a few ears since... maybe 9 or 10, I don't miss my gallbladder, I can eat anything I want and my BM habits were never a concern. How is it turning out for you??? I think in my case it was the NutriSystem diet that caused it.. I did it around the 80s and heard there was a collective suit back them on this company because a lot of people who did this diet got gallstones... who knows.. the Dr said it was mostly hereditary in the women but as far as I know, none of the women in my family, going back at least to my great grandparents generation, have had this surgery; however the Dr also said most people have gallstones but they never act up so they never know they had them... and you could live like that your whole life... so... everyone is different it seems.

I had my Gallbladder removed about one year and a half ago... the only changes i had since then is that i gained about 15 lbs and cant get rid of them. I do go #2 alot, but that started happening before i had the surgery... its really not a big deal.. i dont have more gas or anything like that... you live life exactly as you did prior... there really is no diffrence.. everyones body reacts diffrently to diffrent situations. but your doc can best tell you the side effects. but for me, i really have nothing diffrent

Hi Michelle .. Me again ... As far as food . I haven;'t had any problems I do have more frequent bowel movements but I don't consider that as a problem. Before mine went bad I was haveing headaches all the time , but since the removal they have pretty much stoped . You may be more gassy but I haven't had too much of a problem there. Don't worry about posting about this . It is what is on your mind and thats why we have this sight. again good luck .

Hi Michelle,

This was an interesting read! http://www.hgriggs.com/gall_purpose.html

I knew most of it, and it IS good information, but the most interesting part was at the end when it said you can still get gallstones after your gallbladder is gone.

God bless~

Hello Michelle S,

In 2004,I had an emeregency surgery to remove gall bladder and stones before that I was in alot of painful for a week. Few weeks after surgery, my body weight, food, and bowl movement, etc... are the same there is nothing change. Best is no more PAIN. you will reduce pain your body will adjust without gall bladder. you mentioned that Somebody else told me their friend kept losing weight because her food went right through her because her gallbladder wasn't there to store the fat. That's some not true. My doctor said when food went though while gallbladder wasn't there to store the fat. remember stomach has some store the fat. Alot of people are different bodies and various depend their health. Do not worry about that Please think postive and be brave to get rid of painful.

good luck

I have personally had my galbladder removed and have had no side effects. I had trouble with galstones for more than 10 years without understanding the true problem. I was concerned about having problems after the surgery just as you are. Please know that there can be relief from your pain, and you can still eat the foods you love. I've stopped watching the fatty foods I eat, and have not had any pain for over a year now. There is hope.

Hi Michelle. I thought about you yesterday and wondered how you were feeling. To answer your question: we are all different, with different bodies and what may affect you may not affect me. You are just going to have to experiment on your own and see how your body reacts. As for me, the only vegetable that I still have a problem digesting is Lettuce.
Glad you are feeling better.

Had mine out when I was 24y/o, major surgery. now it's simply laperscopic surgery, recovery short. tummy blotted a little while because of the air they inject. miminal pain. Thank God that aweful pain will never be felt again. You can eat what you want. I don't think I had any extra gas, I eat fruits & salads & beans. If you do use Bean-O. Good Luck & God Bless.

Dont worry about asking more questions, surgery of any kind is scary.

About the gas, you probably will for a week due to the surgery. Everything else I never had experienced. I just felt relief to finally have the gallbadder out and got to eat what ever i wanted again.

I haven't heard about the other stuff and probably not related to the gall badder surgery but the others thought it was.

Hi Michelle S., you have a good question but as I have found out from reading and research everyone recovers differently and the outcome is individual...I know that is not much help to settle your mind at this point but the best you can do is hope for the best and do the best you can with how you recover. I personally do quite ok now after a year..the surgery was fine but my recovery pain was extreme in my opnion, even though it was lyposcopic and lease invasive...we all heal differently and I guess for me it was hard as was my recent surgery of a different nature earlier this year...I am just a hard recovery it seems...As for eating foods and complications as with anything too much of anything is not really good for you...just need to be careful with greasy foods and butters coz they tend to move quickly thru you but it has not been a big problem for me...I am I guess fortunate in that I eat pretty much the same...I have added more vegs and fruits and have not had any problems...just remember to be a patient patient and take it as it comes is best I can say. As for not writing any further after the surgery please don't feel that way...questions are always a good thing and that is exactly what this site is all about...so just be yourself and ask if you need...my life motto is "Ask and you shall recieve" and you can take that for what it is worth but I live by it and I respond always from my Heart...Bless you and Prayers for you also if you wish them...D.

Don't be sorry for asking. All or some of those post-op symtoms might appear, or not. Every body adjusts differently. Follow your drs. recomendations. About the weight loss, if it was that easy everyone who wants to loose weight would want their gallblader pulled out! Trust your doctors and DO come back after surgery and post your outcome. We'd like to know how you do afterwards. Good luck, we'll be praying for you.

Hi M.,

Since I've had my gallbladder removed my bowel movements are more constant and very soft. Sometimes I will eat something and then it goes right through me. This only happens when I eat certain foods. I don't notice it as much with fruits and vegetables as I do with dairy products. It's a good idea to talk to your doctor about this because I did not know this would happen until after my surgery. I would not worry about this too much because I know someone who had the same surgery and they do not have any of these problems. Please let me know how you are doing after surgery. Thanks.
