Fun Restaurant for Baby/Toddlers (Northern Va/southern MD)

My baby son is having his 1st birthday in 2 days. I had hoped to go to the Bugaboo Creek Steak House up on Shady Grove Road off 270 since they have the talking moose, raccoon coming out of the tree stump, fish moving etc. Just learned it is now closed. Rainforest Café over in Tysons Corner is now gone. For those of you in your 40's or more, you may remember the Farrels Ice cream restaurant that used to be at Springfield Mall back in the 1970's. For birthday's they would bang the drum, the fire siren would be going off and the guys would be running back and forth with this stretcher that had the cake and ice cream on it. Great place. All these places were great for little kids and they are now all gone. Do any of you know of similar places like this that babies small toddler's would enjoy? Wonder if there is anything comparable in Northern VA or Southern Maryland? Would prefer not to go into DC.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I am in Southern Maryland and I can't think of a great place for a 1 year old's birthday party. We always did them at home with close friends and family. It's not for the kid, but really the family to celebrate. My kids all napped during their birthday parties because they lasted a long time with it being an adult get together.

I really suggest to just do it at your house. I wouldn't make the hike down to Southern Maryland for a 1 year old birthday party...but maybe that's just me.

M.,

The first birthday party isn't for the child - it's for the parents!! The first year is the hardest....

I loved Farrell's growing up!! However, for a one year old?! OVERLOAD!!! Just like Chuck E. Cheese's would be OVERLOAD - you'd have a crying kid on your hands in a matter of 15 minutes to 30.

I would do a party at home for family and CLOSE friends..and then go to dinner where YOU want to go...I promise - he will NOT remember his first birthday....again...it's REALLY for the parents!!!

I'm in Reston - just North West of you...I really can't think of any place I would take a one year old for a party....sorry!!!

Mango Mike's on Duke Street is fun! Big tropical aquarium, great menu for kids, fun music & tropical weather, sand outside on deck, might be too chilly for that :)
Um someone mentioned a cleaner mom n pop place in Ashburn that was like a Chuck E Cheese...Pizza Go Round but it might be out of business.
Joe's Crab Shack in Fair Lakes area...
Would Dave n Busters be too over stimulating? We would take kids there during the day, no drunks or whatnot :) Its in MD
Happy Bday & good luck

I would do a party at home for friends and family. I agree with WW - the 1st birthday is for the parent's, not the kid.

Like Mom said, my kids napped during parties. I have 4 boys, their first birthday party was at our home. They got excited, then overwhelmed with the people and ended up sleeping after cake.

Have a get together in your home. Close friends and family only.

What about one of the nature centers or I think there's a "soft play room" at a rec center in Reston (I think it's Reston...) vs a place with food. There is a small Chuck E Cheese in Rockville (and not on the Pike, yahoo). Might be a good idea to show up there early, give the older kids some coins, get a pizza, and let the little guys run, so long as the mouse doesn't scare them.
