Fun Hotels for Kids in the Area/suggestions for Glen Rose?

My son is turning six next month and said that he'd rather go spend the night at a hotel somewhere instead of having a birthday party...he thinks hotels are super fun! :) I originally thought of spending a night at the Great Wolf Lodge, but thought the prices for rooms were pretty high. While I haven't ruled out the GWL, I am wanting to look at some other options that might also be fun (and a little more affordable).

We have never been to Glen Rose and I thought that might be a neat overnight trip. Does anyone have any recommendations of where (or where not) to stay?

We live in the Dallas area, so we have lots of options in terms of where we could travel. I'd just like to stay within an hour or two of here, though...not looking to travel to San Antonio or the coast. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

We were just there this weekend. We too live in the Dallas area but wanted to spend the night so we'd have two days to do everything. The drive was right at an hour which was nice not to be in the car too long. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. It was very clean, convenient and great for kids. They have a bounce house they put up twice a day for the kids, an outdoor pool, and they have a movie every night that is kid friendly. They also have free breakfast with a very cool machine that makes pancakes. Definitely recommend this hotel! We went to Dinosaur World and the State Park on Saturday. Very easy to do both in one day. We went to Fossil Rim on Sunday. There are coupons in the Entertainment Book for Dinosaur World and Fossil Rim. They also give discounts if you have Dallas Zoo passes, AAA member or military. My son is 5 and he had a great time.

We love to do Glen Rose. They just have the usual brand name hotels - the Best Western is very nice. Fossil Rim wildlife park is there and I'm sure your son would love that. They have overnight stay options - but they are bit pricey. There's also Rough Creek lodge in the area - again nice but pricey - but they do have some kids activities - and a really nice spa for mom. :) Nearby Grandbury has a fun town square too. And it's worth the trip to Dinosaur Valley State Park if your son is into dinos.

My family and I went to the Country Woods Inn 2 summers ago and we had a wonderful time! It's definitely not a "hotel" but more like individual cottages. It's really cool and there are trails to hike, animals to feed & pet, the creek is just nearby, there's tons of stuff to do on the premises and also it's nearby to the dinosaur park & state park.

I blogged about my trip, with pictures, here:

Glen Rose's claim to fame are the dinosaurs. There is a park with many life-size dinosaurs that could be fun if he's into that sort of thing.

But here's another suggestion: what about going to a drive-in movie? There are drive-ins in Ferris and Granbury - Ferris is closer and Granbury is about the same distance. By the time the movie is over, it would be too late to drive back - so head to the hotel swimming pool or an IHOP for some strawberry pancakes.
