Hello to all the moms out there. We will PCS this summer to Ft. Meade, MD and I would like to find out ALL the information about that area. What schools are on base (I have a 9 and 13yr old). The main thing I want to know is, is it better to live on or off base? Never lived on base before so this will be a first.

What can I do next?

I was stationed at Ft. Meade in 2002. Glen Burnie, Severn, and Laurel are all nice places to live and only a stone's throw away.

Hello. I just moved away from there last year and I suggest if you can get a new home on the base then live on the base, but if not don't move into any of the older homes. For the four years we were there my children were always sick and so so many of my friends and neighbors kids were and are sick as well. If you live off base Columbia, Md is really nice and affordable. Also Bowie. Depending on your BAH, Hanover is also a really nice area to live. Its just minutes from Fort Meade. Odenton is right outside the base, but there are some areas there that aren't so good. If you live on the base the elementary schools are good. The middle school has both military kids and non-military kids. It is a rough school. My nephew went there when he lived with me and there are some definite horror stories I could tell you. I hope I helped you in any way. Another big thing about living on base is that the gossip and noisy neighbors is horrible. Because of our experience there we won't live in military housing anymore. There are benefits and faults. Some of the friends I made there will be forever friends.. I may have never became friends with them if I never lived next to them. So that was a huge benefit. ~C.

Hi,
We lived in Severna Park while we were stationed in Maryland and it was a wonderful community/schools. Close to Annapolis and not a bad commute to Meade.
Enjoy the area and have a crab cake for me!

Hi there,
we use to live on Fort Meade and were in the old housing, we then decided to move off post right outside the gate and had a beautiful 2800 sq. foot home.

The Elementary school on post was a great school. The High School on post in my opinion was so bad I took my daughter out of the 10th grade and homeschooled her until we moved off post and she got to attend Arundel High which was WONDERFUL and she loved it. There is SO much to do. If I had to do it again, I would rather live off post. Hope that helps.
