Ok so here I am again looking for advice. My primary doctor put me on Cymbalta a few months ago because I was having extreme anxiety issues due to family crisis. Well I took myself off of it about a month and half ago because I felt better and I have been doing fine. THings at home have calmed down and I am dealing with stress so much better. Anyway I went to the doctor yesterday because I have been super stiff and in a little pain. Well he thinks I have arthritis and did a blood test. I also have a urinary tract infection that I cannot seem to kick. Sorry I digress. I told him that I had stopped taking the Cymbalta because I feel better when I don't take it. So what does he do, he tells me to get back on it and this time ups it to 60mg. I told him that it was really hard getting started on the 30mg because I litterally felt like I was dying. So he prescribed me Xanax to take with it while I adjusted to it. Well I am not a pill taker and I felt like I was a zombie so I tried taking half of the Xanax and I finally just got tired of feeling liking a zombie so I stopped taking that too and by that time I was feeling ok on the Cymbalta. So here is my dilema I am afraid of how my body will react to the 60mg of Cymbalta. I don't want to take the Xanax to adjust to the Cymbalta. I don't know if I should just go to another primary. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really do not want to get back on the Cymbalta and definitely not at a higher dosage. I am not sure my doctor is listening to me. And about the arthritis he did not even prescribe or suggest anything for the pain. Help!

I'm sorry to hear that your Dr. is Rx happy, and you're body is reacting the way it is. Unfortunately meds can mask the problem (and create new ones) rather than address the root cause.

80% of all health issues are directly related to stress, according to the American Medical Association. If you are seeking an effective alternative to Rx after Rx and fed up with the way meds make you feel, then adaptogens may be the solution to help your anxiety, pain, and inflammation. A lot is being discussed lately on the power of adaptogens (even Oz on Oprah). Adaptogens can help get rid of the negative effects of stress on the body.

To watch "The Story of Adaptogens Documentary" 10 minute video, go to VitalHealth.TunguskaMist.com

I also highly recommend an incredible book titled Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by Winston and Maimes. From the book "There is a category of herbs called adaptogens that help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance. They increase the body's resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors and promote normal physiologic function".

God Bless!

I would definitely go to another dr. If your dr. isn't listening to you, and just prescribing meds you don't need, then why keep going to him?

Get a 2nd opinion or better yet a new Dr. It drives me crazy when Dr.'s don't listen. If you don't need the meds, don't take them. Seems pretty common sense to me!

This is the reason I treasure my doctor. He is very slow about prescribing drugs and always goes to his Desk Reference to double check with drugs I am already taking. Also he takes my word if I say it isn't working! The first antidepresssant I was on seemed to make it worse. He didn't say "take more" or "keep trying". He trys something else. Cymbalta send me reeling thru the house. After my 2nd fall (well the first wasn't really more than a slight dizzy spell, but the 2nd thru me to the floor. I guess you know that got my attention!) I called and told him what was happening. He said stop taking it immediately---which I already had--and come in. So we tried Lexapro and it is working.
Thank God for a physician who listens!

I don't know where you live but he is in Promonade center, Richardson. His name is Lawrie Friedman. ###-###-####.
Good luck , but do find another doctor. The is a doctor on every corner and most of them are good.

Well, is the Cymbalta for depression or to help with the arthritis? Cymbalta is special in that it has a pain blocker too. It is used to treat migrains and fibromialgia and all sorts of things. So, it that is what he is prescribing it for, you might try talking to a rheumatologist that may have a broader source of resources for treating your pain. You may want to try taking the Cymbalta close to bed time, so you may sleep through some of the inital side effects but still have it help during the day. Hope this helps

Hello, I am 38 too and have a huge issue w/ anxiety and have for a long time. Over a couple of years I went from Zoloft to Effexor (which I learned can cause anxiety and nightmares. My Dr. put me onit for Anxiety and nightmares? Getting off of this drug has been the hardest thing inmy life to do. I have not found the answer but I will try everything I can before I go on more drugs. I think exercise is the big key, which I am not doing yet. Working and having 3 children seems to take my every minute. Please listen to your body; God designed us all different. A lot of the Doctors get their info. from Pharmaceutical reps? that have NO degree. I have been seeing a Chiropractor for other issues but he has also given me some insight on this issue too. If I ever use meds. again I will go to a specialist in this field.
Best of Luck, I hope you let me know how your doing.

Hi M., I know what you're going through because I have major anxiety. I'm also on cymbalta. I think your doctor may be thinking you are stiff and hurting because you are so anxious, at night, I get super stiff and clench my whole body and teeth. My doctor told me that they usually don't even prescribe 30 mg and that 60 mg is the recommended dosage by the maker. You really should never just quit something cold turkey either, especially something for the chemicals in the brain. Did they give you a prescription for the 60mg or is it 30 twice a day? You could slowly get to the 60 doing that, but from 30 to 60, I didn't have a problem. I do know how you feel about thinking you're going to die, I had that too, before starting cymbalta, I was so desperate, I would try anything. If you'd like to, feel free to pm me. I think your doctor has your best interest at heart, stick with him for a little while, see if you feel better. Have a great day.
