Frustrated with Children's Dentistry!

We are fortunate to carry $1,500.00 dental coverage on our family. It has been plenty to cover our needs with a co-pay here and a deductable there. My four-year-old developed a dark place on one of her front teeth last spring and I researched the best children's dentists and made an appointment. I won't go into all the frustration with that office, but they found another small spot and wanted another $950.00 on top of the coverage! I was horrified. I told them I wanted a second opinion and found another pediatric dentist who would do it all for $185.00 and NOT knock my four year old unconscious. That REALLY bothered me. Well, it didn't work. The medicine I gave her before the appointment made her sick. I still don't want to knock her unconcious just to fix a baby tooth.
Has anybody out there come up with another solution?

What can I do next?

Hi C., my almost 5 year old has bad teeth. First filling when he was 2,5 years old. 2 months ago he had a pulpotomy, and 3 really big fillings and one small. The dentist did it in two times, first ap. one side, the second ap. the other side. She told me it was nessesairy to give him nitrious oxide (laughing gas) because it were such huge repairs she had to do. I objected first, back in the Netherlands were I'm from we're not as over medicated as here in the USA. So no dentist uses it. But she convinced me that she could not give a good local anesthesia when the child is not fully relaxed, and because these huge repairs she needed to give a very good local anesthesia.
And basically she said if I didn't want it I had to see an other dentist and good luck with that because most dentists would give a total anesthesia in this case. (she said it in a polite way...)
So I agreed, and both times he came back happy, with a balloon and a couple of stickers. No pain afterwards, not afraid from the dentist.

So obviously she did a good job. Without knocking him unconcious, and without giving him medicine before or afterwards.

She and her staff is wonderfull. Her name is Dr. Rozas in Coppell (see also "local busines reviews"). I think she is reasonable prized. Well, it's never cheap, but I don't think she is over prized. Please let me know if you need her address and phone nr., I can look it up.

Personally I wouldn't allow my child to have a total anesthesia, it can have so many side effects. And it is for a dentist appointment, not for a surgery.

Good luck, I.

I don't know where you are located, but Dr. Robert Morgan in Irving, Tx is awsome. He even won an award last year for being the top Pediatric dentist I believe in Texas, but not sure about that part. Anyway....We had medicaid and that is why we started with him. My daughter was 2 in the beginning and is now 14 and never was she knocked unconcious for a procedure. He and all his staff are wonderful. Even if it is a bit of a drive for you, it would be worth it. I cannot recommend his office enough.

Hope this helps,

J.

My children's pedi dentist is AWESOME!!! He talks to the kids and lets them know all they need to know. They allow me to be in the room with them and that is EXCELLENT!! Also, I have never had to have my children "knocked out" or take medication prior to a visit. My son has had horrible trouble with his baby teeth and only one visit that upset him. He had an abscess and had to have it pulled. It only bothered him for a moment. Anyway, enough of the stories. The dentist they see is off Hulen in Fort Worth just south of I-30. His name is Randall Barkely. His number is ###-###-####. Good luck.

We got to Dental Care 4 Kids in Flower Mound, and like Inge's comments they offer laughing gas to relax the patient.

However, I never wanted my kids to have it and they said they'd try it without but if they needed it I'd allow it. My kids don't need gas, only the youngest with a mouthful of cavaties ever needs fillings, and she has a high-tolerance and is very relaxed, so in spite of needing tons of work, she's fine without gas.

They are great dentists. Still expensive, but they at least gave me the option of trying without gas.

The only advice I can give you is the name of our pediatric dentist. She is WONDERFUL! We have only lived here since February and someone had recommended her to us. I would suggest her to anyone and everyone. Her name is Dr. Debbie Sullivan and her office is located on 287 in Mansfield. Her number is ###-###-####. She has been in the business for a while and she is very knowledgeable. Hope this helps. Good Luck! A.
