Frizzy Hair!

No matter what I do, my hair is very frizzy, especially after drying. It's bugging me to death, and several of my friends have commented on it (in a joking way of course) as well as my little sister. Please, if anyone can give me some tips, it would be very appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you, everyone, for sending me in advice! I couldn't get ahold of a straightener, so I've been just letting it dry naturally after towel drying and only brushing it when it's wet, or else sticking it in a ponytail and letting the ponytail poof out (sounds awful, looks pretty awesome). Thanks again!

Hi A.,

I am impressed that you are using this forum- I wish I had some adult women to talk to about this stuff when I was your age!

In 8th grade I cut my hair off into a semi-pixie it was awful! My hair is unmanagable and I thought that it would be easier if there was less of it. I brought a hair brush to school and tried to brush it until it was dry hoping that would smooth it out; but it made it worse and I looked like a mushroom kid (:]. I was self-conscious about it.

The things I have done since those days that have helped are to; brush my hair once when it's very wet- maybe even in the shower before I rinse out the conditioner and just let it dry naturally and be unmanagable in it's own special (beautiful) way, I let it grow out- the increased length helps keep it in shape, I switch products especially shampoo and conditioner all the time- so I cleanse, hydrate, or smooth depending on what I think it needs- it just gets sick of products if I stick to one for a while (the waxes build-up and make it uncooperative), I tend to shampoo my scalp and conditioner from the ends up, and I don't let products sit in it, also I only wash it every two-four days but hormones might make it oily so just look at the front and if its stringy looking near the scalp; wash it. I don't spend alot on products but the one I love to have is Paul Mitchell super skinny serum, its about $13.00 and makes hair so soft and shiney and smooth without making it oily.

I wish you good luck unlocking the beauty that is somewhere in there, S..

I was going to say the same thing. My friend in High School had very thick, frizzy hair. She insisted on trying to blow it dry and wear it straight. But if we put gel or another curling product in it, her hair was actually very pretty curly or wavy. So I would give it a try. Oh, and C++. I'm impressed. That's definitely a good thing to know. Good luck!

If you want straight hair, look into getting a hair straightener and some straightening product. If you want curly, try gel and scrunching it. I was skeptical of hair straighteners for a long time, but recently got one and love it. It takes my hair from curly to straight in very little time, and with a little product, it looks great all day. I find my hair is less frizzy if I let it air dry, which works for me since I have three kids to get ready, as well, I'm up long enough for it to dry, or at least almost dry. I just run the straightener through it then, or leave it curly. For years before trying this, I too, thought I had very frizzy hair. Now it's manageable, even in humid climates. GL and have fun experimenting. Keep going with all the creativity! Sounds great!

Hi A.!

Have you tried to make your hair wavy by putting a curling product in your hair after towel drying it? I also have very frizzy hair if I blow dry, but if I put a curling product in it, and scrunch sections with my fist, it's wavy, almost curly, and looks much more managed.

Bed Head hair products have something called all "curled up", and I use Sun Silk "Waves of envy" products. They are affordable and work great.

Good luck!

I have half curly and half straight hair so I have to blow dry it straight everyday one way to avoid it being frizzy is before I get out of the shower I rinse my hair with ice cold water and then i wait tell my hair is starting to dry before I blow dry it and then when my hair is dry I use the cold dry setting on the blow dryer to cool my hair off.
I hope this makes sense and help you.

A. - I don't have a lot of advice on frizzy hair (mine is aggressively straight and won't hold a curl for anything). I do know that the products you use can make a difference. Try a hair smoothing product before you dry it, and dry on low with a big round brush (the ceramic ones are great, they have the ionizing effect). You may also want to try an ionic flat iron. And the quality of the hair products will make a big difference (I know that all of this depends on your budget, which at 13 can be kinda limited - maybe you can do some jobs and save up).

The main thing that I wanted to comment on, though, is how you come across in your post. I can tell by reading it that you are confident in yourself and that you know you're something special. That self-esteem is amazing and I wanted to commend you for that. You know what you like to do and what you don't like. You are recognizing your strengths. (And, like most women, you're probably embarassed by praise like this. But you deserve to hear it). Hang on to that. Remember that you are a special, amazing, wonderful girl, just because you're you!

I have a 10-year-old daughter, and I hope she has the self-esteem at 13 that you are showing in your post. And, by being confident in yourself and assured that you are a valuable person, you will be teaching your younger siblings those same traits. Way to be - you go girlfriend!

I am the queen of frizzy hair. There are several things you can do. One is use cool water on your hair and only wash it every other day. Condition it with a conditioner for frizzy hair every day. Another thing that I've done is to learn how to style my hair in lots of different buns and ponytails or I wear a hat. A big no no is to blow dry. The heat really makes frizzy hair worse.

I would suggest you get a book called Curly Girl. It has some great tips for curly hair which I'm just guessing you might have.

I have modified what they suggest to the following - I wash my scalp only with shampoo once per week. The rest of the time, I either give it a day of rest and just wash the rest of me in the shower or I just use conditioner...

Good luck and happy hair! :)

Hi A., I'm a Hair stylist and the advice you have gotten is right on keep trying different things to see what works best for you. Talk to the person who does your hair they know what might work for you and your texture. Redken has a lot of great products for curly hair, try their Total Recharge it is a leave in conditioner and will not leave your hair feeling heavy. Good luck

Hi A.,
There are a few products you could try. Bumbles and Bumbles is great - hard to find. Only sold in certain beauty salons. You many also look in the ethnic hair section for a pink bottle, I want to say it called hair luster - quite oily so do not use too much, but is good as well. In both cases, make sure your hair is wet or damp.

All the best,
D.

Hey A.! I have curly, long hair...down to my behind. When I was a kid, my mom didn't know what to do with it. If we cut it, it was even more curly. Along with the curl came the frizz! aaahhh! I always wanted straight hair as a kid. Around your age I finally figured out what to do. I used a lot of conditioner, brushed my hair, and immediately put on hair gel and then hair spray. If I wear my hair down, I need more gel and more hairspray. You really have to find products that work for your hair though. Some gels and hairsprays end up flaky. Just try different kinds until you find the right one! I can't brush my hair once it is dry unless I know I am getting right in the shower. If you have straight hair that's frizzy I think that something like "Frizz Ease" (not sure of how they spelled it though) would work. You just use a little bit in the frizzy spots. Oh...hair...it's such a hassle! Hope you find something that works!!

A. B,
This used to happen to me about five years ago, I switched stores and started buying this amazing shampoo right from the manufacturer and saved my family about $50 a month on all different types of shampoos & conditioners. It also protects hair color with its 13 natural ingredients, no formaldehyde and it has spf protection. If you would like more info you may email me at ____@____.com

Hi A.!

Here are what I think might be some helpful hints.

Washing your hair everyday can make it worse: make sure you use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner...there are some just for frizz. I like Aveda the best, but I know it can be expensive...Pantene, Dove, Sauve and Fruitese Garnier (sp) I believe all have smoothing products. You probably need a good leave-in product...Potion 9 is great, but I know there are other conditioner or silicone based leave-ins that work too! I would find some travel sizes to try out to see what will work for you.

Also, if you use a hair dryer...let your hair dry a little first then finish it with the dryer. If your hair is curly I would try a diffuser, if it straight try a large round brush or a paddle brush to help smooth your hair...and always (with straight hair) point the dryer down, not up or the frizz will be even worse!

I hope you find some really great products that work for you and that you like...13 can be hard sometimes, but it will be over faster than you can ever imagine. Have a wonderful day!

I love Little Sprout products. they are baby safe, smell great and work well. Use the leave in conditioner. Also might try a small amount of the lotion. rub your hands vigorously and then slick on the hair to weigh it down a bit. I also heard a satin pillow case can help for over night.

A.,
Us curly haired people out there feel your pain!:) A couple things that I have learned over the years:
1. Don't brush your hair! If you really need to get the tangle out then put a thick conditioner (something for curly, frizzy hair works well) on in the shower and comb the conditioner through with a wide toothed comb. Don't comb it once you are out of the shower- it breaks down any curls or waves you may have.

2. Get a hair dryer that has a "diffuser" attachment. They look like a claw that you attach to the end of the hair dryer. You put this on the end, put the dryer on low, then scrunch your hair up into the claw. It takes a while but it is worth it.

3. Use hair products. This is important! I use Sebastian Potion 9 (it is like a leave on conditioner but doesn't leave your hair weighted down) and Tigi Catwalk Curls Rock (it is a styling gel). Frizz-ease is a good product as well.

4. The more you touch your hair the frizzier it will get. Put your product on then try not to touch it much.

Good luck with your hair. A good resource for you might be www.naturallycurly.com. Even if you don't have curly hair it has some good info.

Hi A.!

See if your mom would be willing to get you some Smooth Down by Redken. You can find it at Beauty Brands for $3.95 for the small bottle. This bottle usually lasts me about 6 months. You put 2 or 3 pumps on your hair before you dry it. Then dry it with a brush and hair dryer. Finally, after your hair is dry, put on another 1 or 2 pumps. Good luck!

Keep your hair pulled back in a clip until it is dry. Also only wash your hair (unless it is oily), every couple of days. (Some supermodels only wash their hair once a week). Use a leave in conditioner occasionally.
