A friend of mine was just diagnosed with Endometriosis and had surgery a couple of weeks ago to help with it. They got what they could but couldn't get it all. She just went on birth control pills to help keep if from coming back. Anyway, she is still having bad pain and I wanted to find out what others have done with success for dealing with the pain

I have endometriosis and had an ovary removed because of it. Anaprox (sp) would help with the pain as well as continuing the birth control pills. Once she's on the pill for a while the pain will subside a little.

Been there, done that. The best advice I can give is to stay on top of the pain meds and move. The more she moves, the more she can break down the scar tissue and get the drugs out of her system from the surgery.

You are a good friend!

I have it as well. I have had surgery and BC pills and was on Lupron injections for awhile as well. The Lupron makes your body act as though it is going through menopause so you don't have a period. I wish her the best.

I wish your friend the best with dealing with endo. I ended up having a full hysto when I was 25 because I was having surgery about every 6 months and on prescription pain meds. I did the 6 months of lupron, which did not help at all. Having the hysto was the best thing I ever did. There is a group on yahoo that is really helpful and there are a lot of links all so that give information about peoples experiences with endo. There are a lot of support groups online. I am in one on yahoo called Cronich Endometriosis. It does not have lots of getting to know each other chit chat but there are a lot of people who are willing to share their experience, give advice, and there is all so a lot of informational links. All so after surgery the best advice I was given was to hug a pillow when I moved around even getting out of bed or just sit up.

My mother also has endometriosis, and eventually, she ended up having a hysterectomy which is a common treatment if birth control pills can't keep it at bay

I just had my 4th laparoscopy yesterday. I've heard great things about the clinic in Atlanta but my insurance will not cover me going outside of our network in Michigan. But if you have the money, I'd totally do it!

I was diagnosed in 1999 and tried Lupron injections for 3 months but they made me psychotic. I go about 3 years and have to get cleaned out again. But I had 2 boys, one in 2001 and the other in 2004. When the pain gets too bad, the only thing that works is Aleve (naproxin sodium). I take 400-600 mg every 8-12 hours. But if you let it lapse, it takes an hour or more to get the pain under control again. (Back in the late 80's when I was having bad periods my dr. gave me a script for 700mg every 4-6 hours so ignore what the directions on the otc bottle says.)

I've also been better when I stay away from sugar and wheat products. Low-fat/low-carb makes me feel the best and it keeps your body from over producing estrogen which is what feeds the endometriosis.

Take care!

Your friend needs to get the book, "Living Well With Endometriosis," by Kerry-Ann Morris. It will really enlighten her on coping, and it will give information that your doctor doesn't necessarily tell her...like how wheat products make endometriosis worse, since it affects the estrogen levels that endo feeds off of.
I have endometriosis as well, and after surgery to remove most of it, I am doing much better. I hope your friend feels better soon. You are a great friend to want to help. :)

Hello C., My heart goes out to your friend! This disease is awful, I know, lived with it myself. As far as the pain goes, heat eased mine some, hot baths, saunas, heating pads. The doctors never really addressed the pain for me, maybe because it was a different era? I had 3 laproscopies, took male hormones, and still had to have a hystorectomy at the age of 29. The good news is, that worked!! I will keep your friend in my prayers.

Hi C.!
I was diagnosed with endometriosis at 15, 4 years of hormone therapy, 2 laparoscopys, and a year and half of lupron shots later, I was still hurting. honestly it continued that way until I had my first daughter when I was 27 (I am now 29, and have two little girls) I am now free and clear. this pain and discomfort was always much worse when "Uncle tom" was visiting. Pain meds, and heating pads, got me through it as well as trips to the tanning bed. I also saw a holistic doctor. he put me on evening primrose oil, and something else (I am sorry I don't remember) but it helped alot. I wish her the best of luck!

C.,

I had endometriosis and suffered for many years with many complications and side effects. I went to the endometriosis clinic in Atlanta Georgia where Dr. Albee removed the problem and 17 years later I am wonderful. I had a partial hysterectomy and they left my ovaries, but I also had 3 children prior to that. Their clinic is wonderful and the assistance I received before I made the decision to go there was phenemonal. It always helps to get a second opinion. That was the key for me
