Formula Issues

My eight month old has had diareha several times over the last couple of months - usually for no explanable reason. Right now he gets Enfamil gentle-ease formula - we had several issues with gas, colic and general fussiness with anything else. Would any of you venture to guess that he has a mild lactose issue and maybe switch to a soy formula? I have tried every other brand of formula (normal - not soy) and the gentle-ease always worked better i.e., left me with a happier (although, still not sleeping through the night baby). I guess I'm just looking for any suggestions and/or guidance, since my first one started on one formula and stayed on that and slept through the night by two months. Thank you.

What can I do next?

My daughter had issues when we switched her to formula and I am lactose intolerant so we had to switch her to Enfamil Nutramigen Formula.....it is in a orange canister and you can get it anywhere formula is sold.....its like $28 for a little canister but she is so much better now. Hope this helps. J.

My son had this same problem when he was on formula. Our ped. said to try lactose-free formula rather than soy. She said that lots of people who have trouble with lactose will also have difficulty with soy. Lactose-free worked well for him.

When my oldest was 6 mths, he developed lactose intolerance and they had us switch him to soy. Guess it's common in kids who take formula? Anyway, my younger one had colic and issues like that from the beginning.. for him they told us to try regular formula but Lactose free. They PREFER that over soy.. not sure why, but maybe you could see if that's an option in your current formula. I was told it takes TWO weeks to see a difference when switching formulas.. so hold on tight.

Have you tried just a Lactose Free formula? I think they are wonderful...my son was on that, and now my daughter too because of sensitive tummies. Soy made them both vomit (yuck), and it smells like alps (double yuck). Both my children also were sensitive to the Good Start as well. Target now makes a brand of the Lactose free for under $14 for the 25 oz canister...which is great, because when my son needed it they did not have store brands available. Also, when you go to switch him to milk at a year, ask his doctor about skim milk verses whole, or introducing things like yogurt and cheese first. My son cannot tolerate milk well to this day ( no more than a couple of glasses a week, or tummy troubles) but he does fine with yogurt and cheese. He had to drink rice milk when we made the switch because soy made him gag and vomit. Also, ask his doctor about vitamin supplementation if he is not able to tolerate milk at year. Good luck with your decision.

Hi J.,

My son is now 9 months old and we've had him on Soy for a couple months now. He went on soy when he was younger while he was a bit sick with diareah and vomiting and there was really nothing wrong with him. Our dr. told us to try soy for the time being and once he's better to switch back. Once we started him on soy he got better really quick so we switched back to Nestle Good Start and he started having issues again so we put him back and soy and have had him on it ever since. He is perfect. I really believe that the protiens in cows milk is really h*** o* their digestive systems. I highly recommend soy formula. The smell is not the best but my son doesn't have a problem with it!!! The other thing you might want to try, wich is sort of a pain but helped us as well, is just to sterilize the nipples in a pot of boiling water just for like 1 minute or so. Anyways, I hope this helps!!

Good luck,

N.

If I might suggest-try switching your bottles. I have had great success with Dr. Browns bottles. He also may just not be a sleeper. Every baby is different. Good luck!

Try Allimentum. Its a pre-digested formula. Made by Similac. It did wonders for my daughter!

Hi J., my little guy (9 weeks old) was having fussiness and gas issues, so we put him on Gentle-ease. Although he was happier, he still had issues of not having a BM, so we switched to Enfamil Pro Sobee (the soy formula). That actually gave him diahrea, so now we split the formula 2 parts gentle-ease, 1 part Pro Sobee. He's having regular bm's and although he's still a little fussy and gassy, he sleeps really good (only up once a night). I would check with your dr. before switching to soy though. Good luck and hope everything works out!!

Talk to your Dr. My son went through the same thing, Our dr. told me that it wa secondary lactose intolerance I think, It is actually caused by diahrea. He told us to move to Soy just until it went away and then we could move him back. It could have been caused by something else but the regular formula kept it up.

Hi J. -

My 7 month old son has had issues with formual since day one. We finally switched him to Similac Alimentum (per our pediatrician's recommendation) a few weeks ago when we discovered he has a dairy sensitivity and it has worked like a charm!!! He does not have anymore issues and is very content!

Hi J.!
I would check with your pediatrician first, but it wouldn't hurt to switch to soy formula. My 3 month old daughter went from nestle good start to lactose free similac, then back to good start and now she's on Good start soy. It stopped all of her gassiness and fussiness! Soy is lactose free, so it may help, but like I said, your doctor would be able to tell you if he/she thinks that the formula is the problem. I also started giving my daughter cereal at 2 1/2 mos. and she started sleeping thru the night for 12 hours. That combined with the soy seemed to work for us. Good luck!
