This has been bugging me. I have three kids right now. I am prego with number four. Currently my 9yo is refered to as my oldest,my 6yo is my middle ,and my 18mo is my baby. I say this when talking to people who dont' really know the difference between my kids or don't know them at all. I have all boys. So when you have four what do you say? Do you just say my 9 yo or my 6yo? I know I have about a million other things to be worried about and I do but I am tired of thinking about heavy stuff so for today I am going to worry about small silly meaningless things. Thanks for your imput!

What can I do next?

First son, second son, youngest son, oldest daughter, youngest daughter.

I also have an age gap in mine, so I refer to them as "the bigs" and "the littles" - i.e. the littles need to pick up the living room, the bigs are going to the bowling alley. This allows me to disinguish who I am talking about without having to remember all their names. LOL

We have 5 kids. I call the oldest 3 the big kids (ages 10, 8, and 6) and the next 2 are the babies (ages 4 and 2). If I can't talk about them in groups, I refer to the 10 year old (a girl) as 'my oldest', the 8 year old is 'my oldest son', the 6 year old (also a boy) is 'my very middle', my 4 year old is 'my younger daughter', and the 2 year old is and always will be 'the baby' :)
Since I have mixed genders, it is a little easier. With all boys....hmmm... what about small, medium, large, and super sized :)
Congrats on #4. I love having a big family... more faces to kiss and hearts to love.

We often refer to my stepkids as "the big kids" or "bigguns" and DD is the "littlun" or "baby" but at 3 she is only the baby when it suits her. Otherwise she complains about the reference. So maybe 9 and 6 are the "bigguns" and 18 mo. and baby will be the "littluns".

We have 10 with the 11th on the way. We had the first four back to back (3 boys then a girl) and we call them the "original 4." There was a 4 year gap before having 2 more girls, a boy, another girl, then two (soon to be 3) more boys. The second and third girls are just "the girls," the 4th boy and 4th girl are simply referred to by name, and the youngest two boys are the "little ones."

I've never given it much thought. I know I call them my treasures a lot. I have six. Four of them I have the pleasure of raising and two are in heaven. I know I have irritated people by referring to the two that have passed away, but I feel like they are mine and they didn't stop being my children when they passed away. My living children would never let me leave them out. They love their brother and sister and you don't stop loving them once they pass away.

I never refer to my youngest as my last either. There is one thing I have learned over the years is that God's plans are better than my own and I would never not want another child, so right now I have a youngest, but never a last one.

Just jokingly and all we refer to our four children as number one, two, three and four. They are all very close and we and a very comical family so this is how we've done it. No pun at all that our kids are just "numbers" as each one is VERY SPECIAL and IMPORTANT to us. My husband is from a larger family and they all talk about what number they are as they are always asked where do you fit in the line of kids so he just brought on numbering our kids. No way harming them as just a number thought. We also refer to them as their names and the oldest as oldest, two middles as middle and the youngest as youngest.

Oh everyone in my area knows my friends' boys (all four boys under age 9) as the "Krider boys"... they go to school - that's what they are called, they go to soccer - that's what they are called, they go to the beach or party - that's what they are called, they go to the ER - well, the whole staff knows them as the "Krider boys"...

Let's just say she is not having anymore kids, LOL! She's hit her limit :)

Hi M.-

I refer to my kiddos over 18 as the 'olders'...and the three still in HS as the 'youngers'.

I often confuse their respective names here at home...and i have taken to calling each one 'honey' or 'sweetie'! lol

When they were all home...they were known as the "last name" kids as they were so close in age...and so many of them...

Best luck!

Hi M.
I have four kids. They are each so different that in describing them to others, I find I differentiate more by personality qualities. Son: 15yr old - everything you would every need to know about video games....and then some; daughter: 14yr old - very social, likes dance and photography; daughter:12 yr old - very academically talented and motivated; son: 9 year old - all about sports. Many times I would just say: 4 kids - (whatever the ages at that time)15,14,12, and 9........boys on the ends and girls in the middle.
Congratulations!!
Kristin

I have four boys. They are referred to several ways. Either the 'big kids' or the 'little ones'. Sometimes they are #1, #2, #3 and #4 - that way when I get upset and I start counting they all come when I do that. I also have Teddy Bear, Itty Bit, Munster and Doddle Bug. But mostly I call them by every name other than their own. I love them more than life itself. I am blessed to have them.

Best of luck with all 4 of yours. You will figure this out.

I have 4 boys and the youngest is a girl. There is a 7yr gap between #3 and #4.

How I refer to them is
My oldest (15)
The boys ( 11 &12)
The babies ( 3 &4)
Or I refer to them by # ( that really bugs #3 &4 ) But when someone doens't know them by name, Im not sure how else to do it...

They are all my chickens or stinkrats, (they gave themselves those names, not me!). Really though, I usually say, "my 5 yr old" or "3 yr old" since they do NOT like the be called oldest/baby and such.

I refer to "my two oldest" (who are both 13...step twins) and "my younger boys" (who are 7 & 5). All together it's usually "our two oldest, then our 7 year old, and our 5 year old (or youngest)." I think that with a pretty big break between the first two and the second two you'll be in a similar situation of "our two older boys" and "our two younger boys."

Oh yeah as someone else mentioned, there are nicknames. The two youngest are "the meatballs" (not that they're fat...I have no idea how that name came to be). The older kids are "twig" and "lala."

When we started out, the first two were "THE GIRLS". They were very close. But then the 3rd came a long and my 2nd daughter was very playful and whimsical longer than my first. My first was the mature one. She was older and did everything sooner. So then she became Abby, or my oldest and the other two were "THE GIRLS". But then ten years past before the last one came a long. Our 3rd daughter was the baby for so long so we called her the baby or the youngest. Then when the last baby came a long we began referring to the oldest 3 as "THE GIRLS". The baby has always been the baby or our youngest ever since.

The oldest moved out only a year and a half after the youngest came a long. So she went back to being Abby or the oldest. The middle two were "THE GIRLS", and then the youngest was always set apart.

But as so often does happen, the 2nd daughter flew the coup. So for the last several years the youngest have been "THE GIRLS".

You'll figure it out LOL. It'll change for a variety of reasons.

OMG Lora Lee G, my head spun just reading that!!

I have 4, but the oldest is my stepson. So, if he is not around (which is half the time), I have the oldest, middle and baby. When he is here, I usually reference by age, except for the baby, he's usually always the baby (even though he's 3!). My problem is, I can't ever say the right name! Obviously, I know my children's names, but I have a hard time saying which one..usually it will come out something like "Ky-Sh-Joh-Caleb!....oh, whichever one you are, come here!" :)

I have two girls then two boys. The youngest and oldeast look like each other and have back to back birthdays and the middle two look like each other and have back to back birthdays; that's how I usually refer to them when talking to people who don't know them because that's what comes up when they look at my kids. But I don't use thier ages as much as I simply use thier names, and call them who they are: Grace, Alexa, Luke, Jake.

Congrats on number four!

we have 7, ages 20 (his boy),19(his girl),16 (his boy),13 (my girl),11,11( his twin boys),and 7 (my boy) so ours are college kids, teens and littles. it really depends who you are talking to. We are normally talking about the ones at home so it's either the older two or the twins or little one. or his or mine or the boys are usually just the three younger ones. My girl is the only girl home so it"s easy and the twins are easy. With all boys there's not a lot to seperate them. You could say school aged or not. I would still say 6 is the middle because of the age difference. so lodest middle and babies.

I'd refer to them by their names. For example:

"How many kids do you have?"

"Oh well there's Anne. She's six. Then comes Peter who's five, Chloe who's four and Nicholas who is eight months."
