Food Ideas for 8 Month Old.

Just looking for some other ideas of finger foods or soft solids to give my 8 month old son. So far the only thing he doesn't like is peas and he will eat those, but just won't eat much of them. I have been giving him baby food and cereal/oatmeal and those puffs for infants as well as the yogurt melts. I think we are going to try some yobaby yogurt that has the cereal in it next, but was looking for other ideas. I figured I could cut up and steam some baby carrots and see if he would eat those, but if you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them. He has 4 teeth (2 on top and 2 on bottom) but is just learning to use them. He is used to stuff that melts or turns to mush in his mouth.

Thanks,
D.

What can I do next?

remember he isnt chewing with the initial teeth ( no one chews with their front teeth) he is chewing with his very sharp gums. he can eat anything he can have at this age. I would give him a huge chunk of steak or raw veggies yet, but small pieces of food will work great

According to the American Academy of Pediatric's current guidelines you can feed him ANYTHING.

There are 2 precautions:
1. Don't feed anything that can be considered a choking hazard (e.g. raisins, steak, etc)
2. Anything that's a known family food allergen should be introduced with caution.

Otherwise, the only real direction is to introduce new foods every 2-3 days so you can monitor and react to food allergies.

At that age, our kids loved yogurt (we did full calorie, full fat yogurt and never purchased Yo!Babay), white american cheese from the deli, very thinkly sliced deli meats (ham/turkey), pasta cooked very well, ground beef, cooked frozed mixed vegetables, fruit (sliced apples with skin off, pears, bananas, blueberries, grapes, canteloupe, watermelon).

Here's a sample menu from the American Academy of Pediatrics on their parenting website:

You may want to see your ped's opinion about the carrots. A book that my ped gave me said if you want to feed carrots, buy it store bought, as they research for the nitrates/trites. Just a thought. Oh, and my son loved bananas and avocados mixed together.

My 7.5 month old just started finger foods. I cook apple and squash until nice and cook and then just freeze it in finger size chunks. We had mashed potatoes and carrots for dinner last night, and I just cooked up some extra for him. The idea at this point is to start moving them to what we eat, but just in mushed form.

Sweet potato fries are a big hit too.

Stab a sweet potato a couple of times and steam in the microwave (ours has a "baked potato" setting). You can do a couple and puree with a little water the extra & freeze.

Cooked (but not pureed) apples would be soft, too. Oatmeal would work. We started doing cheerios around this time.

Any kind of cooked fruit or veggie, if steam and not super fibrous, would probably work. We bought a lot of fruits & veggies from the freezer section of the grocery, and just nuked them one or two at a time and cut into very small pieces he could smoosh up in his mouth. For green beans, try getting the bag of "french cut"--these are easiest for them to chew/bite.

My son just turned 9 months yesterday and for a while now he has been eating everything I eat from veggies and chicken to meatballs and pancakes. Yesterday he had cut up banana that I dust in crumbled graham crackers to make it easier for him to pick up and an open faced grilled cheese sandwich on wheat bread that I cut up into cheerio sized pieces. He loves pancakes and waffles and refried beans and rice. He'll even eat very tiny pieces of chicken and meatball. I just make sure everything is very soft and no bigger than a cheerio.

My son has always been a good eater. He loves YoBaby yogurt so I definitely agree with you trying that. At that age he started eating bananas, cooked macaroni, goldfish crackers, cooked sweet potatoes, spaghetti (cut into small bites), small pieces of bread, and I am sure there are more thing but I just can't think of them right now. Feel free to let him try anything as long as it isn't a choking hazard or possible food allergy. It is good to introduce new foods to babies so they develop a taste for it.

Hi Devon,

Baked sweet potato and avocado are both almost perfect foods nutritionally and most kids love them. These are the two I would start with. Fresh steamed green beans are fun finger foods for little ones....not canned.

My 10 month old really likes grilled cheese cut up into really small pieces, green beans (again cut up into small pieces), shredded chicken, banana, cooked peaches, beans (slightly mashed)....check out www.wholesomebabyfood.com if you haven't already, that's where I get most of my ideas.
