Food Allergy or Food Intolerance

My 16 month old son developed a little red rash around his mouth after eating roasted red pepper hummus. I was wondering if that is a food allergy or food intolerance and if it needs to be avoided. Would it be the hummus or red pepper? He had peanut butter about 3 hours before...could it be due to that instead? He has had some amounts of peanut butter before. THe rash went away probably 10 minutes or so after I noticed it. There are no known food allergies in our family (so far).

There is lemon in the hummus, but I don't think it's the culprit....he has sucked on lemons before and not had an issue. Pretty sure he has had red bell pepper before. Can't remember if he tasted the hummus last time I had some.

What can I do next?

If it went away on its own within about 10 mins chances are it just irritated the skin. Probably from the red pepper. You could try each food individualy with a couple days in between to see if it happens again.

Hi C.,
do you put lemon in your hummus? The acid can cause a similar rash, but it's normal: not an allergy. (???)

Red pepper may be intolerable for a whle yet. Mine couldn't eat tomato sauce and it broke their skin out around their mouths until they were aboout 5 . I have one with a peanut butter allergy and can't eat it processed, she breaks out in full blown hives.

It is probably an allergy and not an intolerance. Allergies are more likely to cause skin reactions and intolerances will cause stomach reactions (though an allergy can also cause a stomach reaction).

Did the hummus have sesame in it? that could very well be the culprit.

It could also just be that it irritated his skin, as certain citrusy things can do, especially since it went away so fast.
