I was reading the seatbelt questions yesterday and it got me thinking about something. My sister never made her kids wear seatbelts. She always said, "Oh, well they know how to get out of their car seats anyway," when they were little. When they got older she would say, "Well, I can't make them wear them. They will just take them off." I always make my kids wear seatbelts, and when her kids would ride in my cars I would tell everyone to buckle up. They used to say, "Oh, our mom said we don't have to." My response was always, "If you want to get thrown out of the car in an accident I guess that's your choice, but I don't need you flying into the rest of us who will be staying here in our seatbelts." They got it, and would buckle up when they were with me.
My question is, what do you say to others, kids or adults, who ride in your car and say they don't wear seatbelts? I know some people feel very strongly that it should be a personal choice, but what about when that unrestrained passenger becomes a danger to everyone else in the vehicle? Curious to hear other's opinions!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just wanted to add that I was in a very serious accident 13 years ago in which I did not wear a seat belt. It saved my life in a weird way becuase I was driving and the roof of the van over the drivers seat was smashed all the way into the seat. I got sucked out between the two front seats and out the sliding door on the side of the van and ended up in a ditch. I had a lot of injuries of course, but I was alive. What scared me though was that I flew right past my son's carseat on my way out, and that could have hurt or killed him. We were blessed and both of my kids were fine, but it has always stuck in my mind since then what could have happened.
@8kidsdad- I do understand the shoulder thing- among my injuries was a broken left should and a broken back. I wonder if one of those clips someone mentioned would help both of us as I still have issues with that (but not enough to leave the seatbelt off again)
Oh, and when I mentioned personal choice, I was reffering to adults. Kids really shouldNOT get a choice about that one! I wear mine now too!!!!!

My husband is a firefighter, and I cannot tell you the number of times he has come home depressed because he could not save the life of someone who was not restrained in a vehicle. The public safety workers who have to rescue and try to save people who don't wear their seat belts aren't made of stone - they grieve for those losses too. And what makes it so bad is that those deaths are completely unnecessary. So when someone doesn't want to wear their seatbelt, I make them think about my husband pulling a dead child out of a car because their parents didn't make them wear their seatbelt. How selfish of them.

I ALWAYS make everyone wear their seat belts. There is NO negotiation with me on this. I dont understand why some people dont. Do they have a death wish?? Its a safety issue, and I am sorry but I dont want that on my hands for a lifetime, if something were to happen to you in my care. Nope, not gonna happen.

I wear my seat belt even if its for a second. In that brief second, that seat belt could be the difference between life and death. Its that important.

I always tell anyone getting in my car, if everyone isnt wearing their seat belts then we arent going anywhere.

The rule in my car is it doesn't go until everyone is buckled. Kids, adults, whoever. If they don't want to wear a seatbelt, they can find another ride. And, in many states, children under a certain age not being buckled is actually against the law ... if you were pulled over you could get a serious ticket for it, whether they are your kids or not (this definitely moves it from personal choice to something that directly affects you!). And really, how reasonable is it to allow a child to make a "personal choice" when they don't have the maturity to understand the consequences. That's what parents are for!

And you're right ... an unsecured person in a car can become a danger to everyone else in an accident. That's one of my reasons for the rule. The other is that it's setting a good example for the kids (who have long since learned that unbuckling a seat belt, and getting out of carseats when they were littler, is a big no-no).

It's not a personal choice when it's my car and my insurance. You don't buckle up the car doesn't move.

I have a sister that refuses to put her seatbelt on in my car so I just sit there without starting the car. She says, "What's wrong?" and I say, "When you're in your car you can not wear a seatbelt if you want, but when you're in mine you'll go by my rules or we don't go." She would grumble but my car never starts unless everyone is buckled up. I also have parents that will ask if their child can get a ride home from the pool or school and if I don't have enough seatbelts for every child then I say no. Life is so precious, why take the chance.

Hello....I just went throught his while visiting my sister! I've known about it for awhile. When she's talking to me and driving to work or anywhere I hear "beep, beep, beep". Then, I'll say, "Put your seatbelt on!" The kids got in the car the other day with me and I just simply explained the importance of it. I told them no matter who is driving that they need to wear their seatbelts. I asked them if they loved each other and do they love their mom.
They said, yes. I made em promise me they will. Then, I'm with my sister and her boyfriend and again, "beep, beep, beep". I said to him, "Do you love my sister?" He said, "Yes". I in turn said, "Well, she loves you, so you both need to wear your seatbelts!" It's the law and it saves lives! It took me awhile to get use to it, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I tell me son the same thing, "No matter who's driving, if I'm with you or not, please wear your seatbelts." It'll be interesting to see what all have to say about this one.

Growing up we never wore our seatbelts...until a friend of my mom's son died because he was thrown out during his car accident. From then on, we all wore our belts. My kids are 14, 12, 4 and 1, they never question the seatbelts. Belts have always been worn and the kids never have known that not wearing them was ever an option.

I don't understand why people wouldn't wear a seatbelt. I run a passenger transport organisation and our vehicles - buses and cars - do not move an inch until everyone is buckled up. It's a no-brainer.

My car insurance is completely null and void if anyone passenger or driver is not wearing a seat belt.

So therefor everyone wears a seat belt in my car.

Your car, your rules.

In many states it is against the law to not have a seatbelt buckled....

Adults that don't want to wear a seatbelt can always find another ride.

Once I had a little one riding in my car, he didn't want to wear a seatbelt. I told him the car wouldn't start unless he buckled up. No problems then!

In my car, everyone (adults and kids) ride buckled.

Your sis just didn't want to enforce rules.... how are the kids with other things? I hate to see what they are like!

First I truly believe God pulled you from that van that day. Second, I tell people that I will not be responsible for the ticket I get. If you want to ride in my car you will put your belt on. otherwise drive your own car. thats that.

Christi,

I always say "My Car, My Responsibility, My Rules". If the car is going to move an inch, then everyone has their seatbelt on.

Growing up my father had the same rule. He was a fighter pilot in the Air Force (1965-1988). He always told us that not only was it a safety issue, it could also cost him his career if we were unbelted and he got in an accident. The military wasn't going to trust him with a multimillion dollar jet if he couldn't be trusted to take basic safety precautions with his own family.

Once someone enters your car you are responsible for their safety and well being. If they don't want to put on a seatbelt that is a personal choice they can make in their OWN vehicle not yours. If they feel that strongly about not wearing one then they should drive their car, or just suck it up and follow your rules.

I don't wear seat bealt in my car. To me it should be a personal choice. If I'm in someone elses car, I buckle up IF they ask me to. I don't hassle them or give them an arguement, I just buckle up and hold the belt away from my sore shoulder.

Good luck to you and yours.

It is a personal choice, for the DRIVER. Everyone else needs to follow the drivers rules or they can get out and walk, and my rule is EVERYONE wears a seat belt.
