Sounds like she has a stomach virus...not the flu. I do not belive you throw up and have diarreah when you have the flu. You have horrible body aches and a high fever when you have the flu. My son had Influenza type B last year and he did not throw up or have diarreah.

Actual "Flu" or "influenza virus" and the "stomach flu" (an enterovirus) are two totally different things.
What you are describing, with the vomiting and diarrhea would be classified as a "gastroenteritis" not as "flu". The "flu" virus causes a respiratory illness, cough, exhaustion, fever, and body aches (among other things) and may rarely cause some nausea...but not the vomiting and diarrhea. "Flu" tends to start it's run around this time of year, peaking often around January/Feb.

As for this "stomach bug"...they can be rotten. We had a major outbreak around the same time last year at our office in Maryland. Hopefully it won't last too long. Try to get some fluids in her..even if it's only sucking on an ice pop, or you can make your own ice pops with pedialyte. If she can drink and keep it down...JUST small sips at a time. Water actually tends to make it worse (ricochets right back up!), so stick with things like pedialyte, gatorade (diluted with 1/2 water so it doesn't make the diarrhea worse), ginger ale, etc. When she is able to eat again...go slowly with the BRATT diet (Banana, rice, applesauce, weak tea, toast.)
If she is vomiting and having diarrhea for more than 24 hours and is unable to keep anything down, if her mouth appears dry and she's lethargic...take her to the ER so they can get her rehydrated. These viruses can be just miserable. AND be sure to use disinfectant wipes on everything! They tend to be VERY contageous!
Hope she's feeling better soon!

well, vomitting/diarrhea isn't actually the flu. influenza is a respiratory illness accompanied with extreme fatigue. your daughter probably has gastroenteritis. keep a watch out for dehydration. good luck!

The Flu has other symptoms, keep her drinking small amounts and avoid hard foods that will easily upset het stomach.

I don't know if this is accurate or not, but someone once told me that most of the "stomach flu" people get is actually from something they've eaten.

One of my daycare boys had a fever during his days off this week and has been out of care all week because of it. He ended up with pneumonia. I am guessing that it may have been the flu first. But I don't know for sure. His mother now has it and she has the aches and pains that goes with the flu. A couple weeks ago my whole family had the aches and pains and low grade fevers too. My daughters fever was actually rather high at one point.

Be sure to get a lot of rest. Early or not, it's back and back with a vengeance.

This year there was a spring flu and a summer flu. We know because my normally very healthy children that only get a cold once a year were all down with both. I couldn't believe it, but others had mentioned it when I talked about my kids being like that. There seem to be some super bugs going around. So, it is never too early, and obviously not going with the seasons this year. Even Childrens hospital had said that they didn't have the lull like they normally do this summer. Of course, that is where they got the summer flu.

I'll tell you the same thing that I tell everyone else this time of year, Kool-aide! We had a doctor recommend this to us several years ago and it always clears up the diarreah. Make it as usual and then dilute by half when you give it to her. We had something similar a couple of weeks ago so it could just be a virus that is going around.

According to my daughters school nurse she has sent home several kids with the flu and stomach virus just in the last week or two. She has basically said that it has already started. When I went to my doctor one day last week he asked if I wanted the flu shot because it has already started. So no it is not too early this year but it does seem early to me.

I don't know where you live, but there is a nasty virus going around alsready. It has hit some of the schools and preschools. I teach at a preschool and we've had several kids out because of it. It caused vomiting and diarhea. Keep her hydrated and wait it out. Good luck and God Bless.
P.S. Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Liberty is scheduled this Thursday to give the flu shots from 11-6 if you are interested in getting one for you or your family. They are $20.

It is not too early to get the flu, change of weather is perfect time to get it, and mostly because we stay in more and are not as careful about touching our mouths and noses and not washing our hands. September - October is the time to get flu shots if able. Don't get the flu shot if you are sick, but a week or so after feeling better would be a good time. The flu, although more commonly is respiratory, can include gastrointestinal issues as well. I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Good Morning S., With children it's never to early for anything. Keep her comfortable, sip small amounts of pedilyte, they have ice pops with pedi. in them also.
See if she can keep down jell-o, sugar free of course. Dry toast if she feels ike nibbling on something.

You didn't say how old your daughter was, so take it one step at a time. If it continues today, through weekend take her to ER or get her in to her Dr Monday morning.

God Bless, I pray she is better really soon.

"Flu", as such is more respiratory than gastronomical. Does she have a fever? Has she eaten anything new or unusual in the past few days? I always reviewed the past 48 hours before getting very excited about the cause of childhood vomiting unless there is a fever present. My children are all now grown, so this may be an old fashioned approach.
Pedialyte or a similar product would be helpful in maintaining her electrolyte level.
