Hey everyone! I am looking to switch to fitted cloth diapers for my 6 month old son. My questions are for anyone who is currently using, has used, or knows enough about the to help me out! LOL I am just curious as to how many I need to buy, and what fitted cloth diapers work the best for you. Also do you need to use a diapering service and if so how much does it cost and how long does it take to get your diapers back? Sorry for the million questions, but I am really wanting to get started on this but haven't the slightest idea how to start!! Thanks so much in advance!!!! =)

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded!!! I went through cottonbabies.com and they had it set up so I could by the bumGenius 3.0 by the dozen! So I bought 24 diapers, and I took the plunge for the cloth wipes as well!! Yes it was an investment but I know it will be worth it! To have diapers that will grow with my son and to never spend another dime on diapers that just get thrown away is going to be great! =) My husband thinks I am nuts because I literally just woke up one morning and said I wanted to switch to cloth! But he is all for it too...he just didn't know where the thought came from, and neither do I! LOL Anyways I am so excited to start...and a little nervous. Thanks again ladies for taking the time to respond and get me in the know! Wish me luck!!! =)

Fitted diapers are form fitted. Some styles fasten with velcro and others fasten with snaps. You will need a diaper cover with a fitted diaper. You will need 8-12 fitted diapers and 4-6 covers per day. Younger babies need more fitted diapers and diaper covers than a toddler.

My personal opinion would to stick with disposables. They keep the skin very dry and the house from smelling! we look back on the days we used cloth and laugh for putting ourselves through the misery.
Best of luck

Hi! We just started on cloth diapers and we love them! Our son is 16 months old, so we started late with him, but we are expecting another. We use Bum Genius One Size Pocket diapers. We have 14 and they are just fine for now. When the new baby comes, we'll have a mix between our current diapers and "prefolds."
If you go to www.tentinypiggies.com (that's where we bought ours), you can see several videos demonstrating different types.
We also wash our own. Our water bill went up $2/month or a little less. They are so super easy to clean.
Make sure you also buy the biodegradable liners. I forget what they are called, but they are on the site I gave you. Basically, you put them on right at your baby's butt and I call it a "poop catcher." It catches the poop so all you have to do is pick up that liner and flush it. Most of the time, we don't even have to rinse the diaper after poop because the liner comes off clean. And they are super cheap. I think around $6 for 200 liners.
Anymore questions, just ask!

I'm with Jamie. We have been using cloth for 3 years now (2 kids). We have tried a few types including Fuzzi Buns. We currently use bumGenius 3.0 diapers and they work great! We got our diapers from Cotton Babies because of their trade-in/-up program. If you send your diapers back in good condition, they'll give you credit (used to be a cash refund) for about 40% of the price you paid. That was great when moving up in size with the Fuzzi Buns but now that we use BG 3.0, it's not necessary since they fit babies 7-35lbs.

As for how many to get, try the Punkin Butt site for some refernce info.

We have 18 bumGenius 3.0 diapers which is enough for about 4 days before having to do laundry. We also got some cloth wipes because I had ambitions on making wipe solution instead of using store bought wipes. Yeah, that's something that's best left for the Martha Stewarts of the world!

I have a bit of experience in different kinds of cloth diapers. There are so many different kinds to choose from. And there are a lot of deciding factors. Do you want them to last as long as possible and grow with your baby? How big is your baby now? What is your budget to spend on diapering supplies? Would you feel comfortable washing your own, or do you need to hire a diaper service? Hiring a diaper service limits what can you use. I use few different kinds of diapers, but I like Tiny Tush the best. They make One Size (OS) diapers, so they can grow with my daughter. I wash my own, and it's a lot easier than it sounds (and cheaper than hiring a diaper service), I also use cloth wipees and make a wipee solution (only takes about 1 minute to make). And that saves money, too. Buying the cloth diapers initially can be an investment, but it saves lots of money in the long run. There are other cheaper ways of doing it as well.
I get all my diapering supplies from www.punkinbutt.com. She also has great instructions for washing diapers, general care and a recipe for the wipee solution.
If you know what you want, you can look on www.diaperswappers.com to buy used (good condition) diapers from other moms.
If you want to see what I use, and how I put them together, or want to talk about the different brands, washing instructions, pros and cons, ect, just email me and I'll give you my cell number. :)
Cheers,
E.

I cloth diaper, but am not a huge fan of fitteds. I love pockets, though!!! Happy Heiny OS and BumGenius OS are my favorites. I would recommend contacting Stephanie from www.ababyconnection.com (you can tell her J. V. sent you, she's my friend). She lives locally and will be able to help you a lot. She has diaper classes where she can show you all the different kinds of diapers. You can also go to her house and look at and touch a bunch of fitted diapers to see what you like best.

I don't use a diaper service because of the cost. I find that having about 21-25 or so diapers gets you through 3 days of diapering, and doing one load of diapers every 3 days is totally manageable for me.

I love cloth diapering!! You can message me with any questions. Good luck!

We use the bum genius 3.0 and love them. We had 18 diapers and I do a small load everynight. It was overwhelming at first, but now it's just part of the routine. We recently got a few size large fuzzi bunz. They are nice, but I like the bums better because they velcro and it's easy to get them on quick...before baby crawls off. Baby Bear sells both. Lomas and San Mateo area. We got ours from diapers.com. Washing is easy. We just take the liner out, throw in a canvas lined pail and then I dump it all into the wash. Cold soak and prewash with just a tiny amount of soap then a hot wash with no soap at all. Air dry and stuff!!
Good luck. I don't think you'll regret it!

We have used Fuzzi Bunz, Swaddlebees and now Bum Genius. I hated the swaddlebee’s because they are more fitted (countered) so my son seemed to wet through them all the time. Our Fuzzi Bunz were awesome but their problem is that they come in sizes so as the baby grows you need to but a bigger size. But we never had leaks or any issues. They also have a snap system so there is no concern about the Velcro closures snagging the diaper. With baby #2 we went with Bum Genius because they are an all in one that grow with the baby. We did not use them the first few months because they were huge on our little one. She was 8.6 when she was born but they just swam on her and she looked terribly uncomfortable. She is fine now and seems to love them. We will see how the sizing goes as she gets bigger I am a bit leery that they will take her through to potty training since the rise on them doesn’t seem as large as the Fuzzi Bunz. Also they come in colors and the Fuzzi Bunz seem to have the best color selection if you are into that!
I will tell you the best deals we have found are on Cotton Babies, www.cottonbabies.com. They have a program called “growing up in cotton” and its 5 dollars to join. This lets you trade in your diapers. We never had an issue with the credits as we turned in the diapers for a larger size. They give you about ½ the price of the diaper as a trade in. It’s a set price so you know ahead of time what you will get back. Also when you are done with them you can send them back and they will give you the same amount in a check. The “used” diapers go to needy countries ect. So it’s a win win deal!
As for how many. It really depends on how often you plan on washing. We have 18 diapers and we wash about every 2 to 3 days. The initial investment is a bit high but they are well worth it. We are working on 9 months of no diaper rash. As long as you follow the washing instructions they come out smelling clean and are easy to get used to! Great luck!

There is sometimes a cloth diapering options class with lots of samples and advice here:
http://www.bodymindandspiritabq.com

At your son's age, 12 will get you through a day plus some.
Fuzzi Bunz are very popular and seem to do really well, across the board, for most. There are exceptions, of course. Even with buying more sizes, they just work best and fit best, from what I've learned.

Diapering services in town only clean prefolds and they're not "yours." That is, you don't give them your diapers and then get the same ones back. That would be very hard for service to monitor. You clean your own covers and they take care of the prefolds. When they pickup the dirties, they leave clean ones at the same time. I've only ever washed my own diapers and it's not that hard, esp. with just one child.
