So What Happened?

I just want to Thank You all for all your great responses and advise.I just recently became a stay at home mom and Yes I have been working with my daughter. Playing at the park, bike riding, swimming, walking, basketball. This is why I left my job is to work with her and it's also been a financial struggle for us but God is good.
I have kept her very active and that is how she has kept her weight the same. She is growing taller which is great. Now she is just tired of doing all of this. That is why I was thinking of a kids gym because she will have a personal trainer and see other kids just like her. I will continue to be active with her but I also do have a 5 year old that is the opposite, very thin and she is loosing the weight with all of this activities. My 9 year old had very low metabolism I have been told that maybe when she starts her period she will be able to lose her weight. I do prepare good healthy foods that she is also very tired of. Again, Thank You all for great advise..

Where are you? There is a Kids fitness &or Karate center in Placentia/Yorba Linda. I can get the name & address if you are interested.

My 9yr old daughter is also overweight, but she has motor skill issues so its harder for me to find something she'll do.

I've not heard of gyms accepting children, however, I know that the Lakewood YMCA has a health class for children and it may include exercising. You might want to check with your local YMCA.

Even better option - take her to the park and make her run around playing, buy a trampoline (it's amazing how much exercise they get on this), put in a basketball hoop..something like that. we all need to stay in shape naturally and if kids are given the chance, they'll exercise the weight right off. take your family on hikes (eaton canyon, by jpl, there's a ton of places). make it a weekend ritual to do something fun like that and she'll drop the weight. gyms are intimidating for kids and it makes them feel FAT! trust me on this, i was and am overweight and going to the gym feels like a dr. appointment. playing is much better!! good luck!

Hi, i would like to tell you not to enroll your little girl in a gym this would only highlight the problem and may affect her self esteen. Take advantage of being a stay home mom and do more outside activites. What better way to keep yourself and child healthy at the same time with focusing on the problem. Go to the park together and enjoy nature run together. This would enlightend not only both of your health but your relationshiop. I wish i was in your shoes. I would do so much with my two boys since i am a single mother, work full time, and i am student to become a Marital, Family, and Child therapist. Next time you go to market limit junk food. :) Good Luck!

I know huh. I haven't heard of one, but what a great business idea! A place where kids can get moving! I can't wait to see if anybody else knows of such a place. I used to take my kids to 'Discovery zone' to get them out of the house and run around, but that's not the same as a kid place for exercising.

I honestly wouldn't take her to a gym because then she might become self concious. I would say if you have a dog, take your girls and have them walk the dog. If not, you could always take them to the park. We're starting to get nice weather, so spending some time at the park on a regular basis could be fun for all of you. I know she's a bit older, but I even still have fun at the park and I'm 19 and I have a six month old baby! I say you're never too old to go to the park. :) Swimming is also fun. If you don't have a pool, there are places that have swimming pools that are open to the public. Just look on the internet and I'm sure you'll find something in your area.

Hi C.,
Yes, my 13 and 10 year old kids work out a youth conditioning center which includes cardio, SAC (speed, agility, coordination) and circuit training. They have trainers and they begin and follow up with fitness testing every quarter. Both of my kids are in great shape and love to work out. They are involved with sports and just running around too. The gym provides general conditioning as well as more specialized programs for athletes trying to improve their strength and skill.
They design a program that fits your child. The facility we go to is called Bogifit Youth Conditioning Center in Anaheim Hills, on La Palma between Imperial and Lakeview. The phone number is ###-###-#### or www.BOGIFIT.com. If you don't live in this area; call and see if they have one near you.
Good Luck!
