I have a 23 month old son who I call my "little parrot!" He repeats most questions that I ask him but he is able to talk without repeating as well. I think it is normal and I think at this age it is very normal and sometimes very cute!!!!!

I think that is most likely normal--it's how they learn. Does he also say words when you point to a picture in a book?

Not sure what you are asking? He repeats what? Words that you say, or he says the same thing over and over again. Both are normal. If he is repeating what you say, at least you know he is listening to you! Which is something older kids sometimes don't do. They are great at tuning parents out.

Don't worry... It's normal. By repeating, he is learning about language and communication.

It is completly normal, he is practicing his speach. I think it would be better to encourage his speach than try to get him to stop repeating you. If he has other issues than I would consult a peditrician.

Children will often repeat what they hear, my youngest is at that stage right now. It's typical for them to make attempts at sounds/ words & sometimes approximations for what they hear, sometimes making up their own word.
If your child is repeating or echoing sentences I'd bring that up to his ped. especially if there are other concerns with his development.

J.,

First, I need to say I have a son with autism...he is 5. He is high functioning and very verbal. Some repeating IS normal and the way that kids learn to speak, however, there is a repeating that can persistent. For example, is ALL of your son's speech repeating, whether it be things you have said, videos he's seen, books he's read? DOes he always repeat things verbatim, with no variation, or does he asks for things in the form of repeated question? For example, When my son wanted a glass of milk, he ALWAYS said "do you want a glass of milk"...meaning "I want a glass of milk." My son has little "original" speech; he speaks mostly in phrases exactly the way he heard them originally. Also, he repeats things, videos, stories, at inappropriate times...just babbles to himself, not in conversation with someone. This kind of repeating is called echolalia; and I would talk to your pediatrician and ask for a speech and language evaluation if this sounds like your son. Also if he doesn't point or wave those can be early indicators of a developmental problem. Talk to your pediatrician. The sooner the better. And if it turns out to be nothing than great! You won't have to worry about it. My son has benefited a great deal from speech therapy; he's been seeing a speach therapist since he was 3...and he continues to make progress every day.

If you have more questions feel free to send me a private message. I H. all is well with your son!

It is called mimicking the copy what you do, that is how they learn.

Hi J.,
Some repetition is normal in a 2 year old (for example, if you say, "Do you want a cookie" and he says "cookie"). You should be concerned if your child seems to have trouble saying anything that isn't repeating what someone else says, or if he repeats a lot of strings of language (from books, movies, tv shows, computer games, etc) when it's not appropriate. This kind of repeating can be a sign of a language problem or of autism. You should probably check in with your pediatrician, who may want your son to be seen by a speech-language pathologist (I'm a speech- language pathologist)who will spend time with your child and get to know where his language and social skills are in comparison to where they should be for his age. Therapy may or may not be needed, but if he needs help, it can make a big difference, especially if you start young like this. Good luck!

Yes. Both of my children did/do this. They are little mockingbirds at this stage. It is how they learn to talk and expand their vocabulary. :)
