First Stages of Sever Diaper Rash

Hello ladies, well after reading so much great advice for other moms I am finally asking for a little help myself. My 16 month-old son has been taking an antibiotic for 9 days. A side effect has been BMs that are rather loose, very dark, and without a scent. You'd think that would be a nice change, but unfortunately that is the main signal to know he needs changing. We have been consistent about checking his diaper about every hour. But this morning he must have had a BM sometime during the night and didn't wake up. End result...horrible rash. He is in significant pain everytime we cange/wipe him after a BM and it is becoming a terrible experience for all of us. It appears to be one step away from becoming an open wound and I want to do everything I can to avoid this. Some things we have tried is Baking Soda in the tub, lots of diaper cream, a rash-friendly diet of rice, banans and applesauce, and as much time as possible bare-bottomed. He goes to daycare for 6 hours a day so he can only be naked for so long. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Ouchie!

You might want to be careful with the applesauce, I know applesauce and apple juice cause my 18 month old son to tend towards a diaper rash. We recently tried "butt paste" sold at places where you buy desitin. I think it works better and has more active ingredient.

Hello! My twin girls had terrible diaper rashes from time to time and in my experience what worked best was to wash with soap and with "colder" water (not warm)after each bowel movement and then dry througly. And then, the combination of neosporin first and a thick layer of balmex. This is what I call miracle for us!! Good luck!
PS. change diaper often!

Is the rash red and more like raised bumps? If so, it is probably a yeast infection from him taking the antibiotics. The best thing is to let it "air out" so it looks like you are doing the right thing. What I would do is let my little guy play on a towel with no diaper on and applied over the counter anti-fungal medication (call your doctor, they will tell you which one is OK for your little one to use). It really helped. Hope this helps!!!

My son, who is now 3 1/2, had a similar diaper rash as an infant/toddler and my infant daughter has also had some bad rashes. It is amazing how those "non-scented" BM's are so toxic to their little behinds. I have found that Triple Paste works best. Lather it on really good. You can't find it everywhere but I was able to find it at CVS in the baby section where all the other diaper creams are located. Good luck.

With both of my children, they developed a yeast infection on their bums. My pediatrician recommended an OTC (over-the-counter) fungal medication. I purchased the generic Target version and it worked fine.
I'll bet that's what it is. So many of my girlfriends' children had it too. I think it's more common than one realizes.
Good luck

What you have described sounds a lot like some of the diaper rashes that my kids get. For my kids there are two kinds of rashes. The first is a normal rash that responds well and quickly to zinc creams. The second is more like what you describe and is a fungal infection. Anibiotics can make you less resistant to fungal infection. IF your son has the same rash as my kids get I reccomend taking him to a doctor (just to confirm) then treat with jock itch creams. As for prevention you can put some petroleum jelly on him with EVERY diaper change. It makes a huge difference. I've also noticed a pattern with my kids. They tend to get it when they have had too much acidic food. I hope this helps!

Poor guy!! It's so hard when these things happen. I can tell you what my pediatrician recommended when my son had to go on antibiotics. She said to get the probiotic complex at Trader Joe's, (don't know if you have them near you) and crush the pills and put them in his cereal or other food. It has a sweetish taste to it. It puts the flora or helpful bacteria, back into his gut. The meds destroy it while destroying the harmful bacteria infecting him. My husband also takes it as part of his regimine to control IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). I also put Aveeno oatmeal treatments in his bath water to help soothe his skin. You can get those at any drug store. And finally, I found that the best diaper rash treatment for my son was Butt Paste, which is available just about everywhere. It has a higher concentration of zinc oxide. You are doing the right thing by giving him as much "air time" as possible. When he's done with his med cycle, you may want to make sure he's getting yogurt everyday as it also replenishes intestinal flora, and possibly a green drink (dilute it for his age), like Green Machine. Careful with the green drinks as they can loosen the stools again. Thinking about it, you may want to talk to his pediatricain before adding too much to his diet.

Hope he gets better soon. Sending cyber hugs. B

Coconut oil will make it feel good and clear it up. Coconut oil also heals acne and herpes. Good luck!

You are doing EVERYTHING that I do when DD's diaper gets like that. It seems that after not having them for a week or so, the first poo after she eats red grapes INSTANTLY gives a "wound" type rash. (like less than 5 minutes!)

I have never tried baking soda in the tub, but i do plain water baths and when I think I might put too much ButtPaste on, I put a little more. She gets fussy at the first touch but calms down once it starts to cool. I actually don't change her diet either, and she's good within a couple of days. Hang in, you guys will be fine :)

My son also had a terrible time while taking antibiotics. The first thing I recommend is giving your son yogurt and also keeping his diet as basic as possible (ie: the bananas, rice, applesauce thing). I did have some success in helping reduce watery stools with that. Also, I know this sounds weird, put corn starch in his diaper each time you change him. I don't quite know why it works, but it worked better than any cream I found. After a day or so, you should notice a considerable improvement. If you don't, you may be dealing with a yeast infection which will require an anti-biotic cream. Good luck- hope your little guy is tip-top soon!

You might try the Soothing Baby Bath Treatment by Aveeno...it uses natural colloidal oatmeal- a long recognized ingredient that relieves dry, itchy, irritated skin Also, I have used and had amazing luck with something called Boudreaux's Butt Paste. (If you are in the San Diego area...Target sells this) I recommended it to my co-worker for his twins who were having the same issue and it was the only thing that worked for them.
Good luck!
