First Solids

My daughter is six months old and I have tried giving her a few different single grain cereals and she hasn't seemed to like any of them. It's actually kind of funny the face she makes when she tastes them. After the first taste she refuses to open her mouth. Is it a big deal if I skip the cereals and go straight to the fruits and vegys? Also she was a sensitive tummy (she's on Alimentum formula) so what foods are most easily digested? I'm a first time mom who doesn't know much about starting solids so any advice would help.

What can I do next?

You probably do want to call your doc's office and ask how important the cereal is. I don't think it's a very big deal, but it does have the iron for babies who are getting ready to be on the move. However, it does sometimes take A LOT of tries before a baby will eat something new. So, don't give up if you've only tried a couple times. I've heard it can take up to 15 times of trying something new.

My son has a sensitive tummy to and he didn't have any problems with any of the vegies (except of course those he didn't like). Generally, sweet potatoes and squash are well-loved and easy on the tummy. For some reason, carrots commonly do cause a slight rash (according to my doc), so just pay attention after you start this one. Both of my kids got a rash with carrots for a while. Have fun - this is a fun time!! It's great to watch their little faces when they taste something new - good or bad!

What does your pedi say? My youngest daughter is also 6mo old and has acid reflux, so our pedi suggested we wait just a bit on introducing solids (although, because she was spitting up so much, we started introducing oatmeal into her formula and bottle at 4 months to help keep it down). Im not saying this is something you need to do, but your doctor should have some good ideas.

I hope this helps! THis is such an exciting and fun time; enjoy it!

Try mixing some yellow or orange veggies WITH the cereal. Have you tasted it? It's aweful! :oS If she has any teeth, you can offer Cheerio's (just be in the room with her while she gets used to eating them).

I suggest starting with veggies so she develops a taste for the NON-sweet stuff first. Give her 5 days to a week with each new food to be sure she will not have any reactions to them (allergies/sensitivities). This way you can isolate which foods she can and can't eat.

If you want a list of the order the foods should be best introduced, you can probably get this from your local WIC office or the pediatrician.

Have fun and take a LOT of pictures/videos of mealtimes. :o)

Blessings,

My last child also didn't like cereal, later we figured out that it was too bland for her (she currently will eat salsa like soup). Start with veggies. Most kids like fruits but if you give them veggies first their more likely to keep eating them. We found the orange veggies worked best (carrot, sweet potato, butternut squash). I've known children who were allergic to almost everything who could eat the orange veggies.
