First Noticable Sign of First Tooth Eruption???

My son is almost 9 months old. He does not have teeth yet. Well I think a tooth is about to come in(erupt). I noticed one small white bump on the top of his bottom gum today. There are no other bumps anywhere else. Is this a sign that the tooth is coming in? Or should I bring him to his ped. and have her look at it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Finally my Little' B's tooth has come through the gum. It is only the top of his tooth showing, but the wait is finally over. Or should I say the fun is beginning with the first tooth. Thank you to everyone who has replied to my request.

My son didn't get his first tooth until 15 mon. then he only got one. he got 5 more at 18 mon. then nothing until 23 mon and he got 10 in 2 weeks-it wasn't pretty!! He would have swollen gums and I could see the white bumps way before any teeth actually erupted. He would have more discomfort symptoms before, usually by the time I saw an actual tooth, he was acting normal and I finally had an explaination for his monster-like behavior of the previous few days. I highly recommend Teething tablets, my son loved them and I could see the difference in his behavior right away. you can get them at any drug store.

I'd say definitely. You will notice a possible change in attitude (fussiness) and alot of drooling and chewing on things too. All babies are different. My 8 month old has 6 teeth already! She has done quite a bit of teething!

hi jen! it was a long time ago for me but i remember tooth time lol... and thats how i noticed when teeth came out... a white almost nonexistent bump on the gums... if you run your finger over it sometimes you can feel that it is a bit hard because it is the edge of the tooth... also watch out for lots of slobbering or drooling, chewing on things, crying, and diarrhea... those are all tell-tale signs... if you are concerned about him not having any teeth out yet, you can schedule an appointment with a dentist, which can answer some of your questions... good luck!

Sounds like the normal signs of teething! Do keep in mind that those bumps can get very enlarged and sometimes fill with clear liquid. My son's got to the point that we had to puncture it with a sterilized needle to let the fluid out..he stopped screaming and the tooth came in much faster. Sometimes these fluid filled pockets erupt two or three times on the same tooth before it comes in. Best thing to do is to massage his gums in the area and try to stimulate the gum. Also if he is fussy, you can rub anbesol (my kids hated it) or liquid benedryl can be rubbed on the gums to ease the pain...along with Tylenol or infant Motrin. Good luck, keep an eye on it, but don't worry!

Probably a tooth. Be warned, sometimes they can kind of poke out and then go back in! Be happy your baby's teeth are coming in later than some babies teeth. The later the baby teeth come in, the longer they keep them and the healthier the adult teeth will be!! Congrats!

Definitely sounds like a tooth trying to come in! So, any fussiness or runny nose could be attributed to that in the near future :)

Jen,

I work for a dental office, don't worry.. every kid is differnt.. my boys did not get there first tooth till 12 mos. Don't worry your little boy is just fine. Once the tooth does come in its best to take washcloth and just wipe the teeth done.Tooth brush is not needed yet.. Good Luck....

Hi!!! If there is a white bump there it is more than likely fixing to come through. They usually come in 2's so be watching for toothie #2 to pop up right after #1. Rub your fnger across the bump and see if you can fill a tooth there. I am sure it will come soon. Good luck!!!

Oh yes that is a tooth coming in. Brush up on some reading about teething because there is so much that teething can do such as, gas, fussiness, sleep problems, fever, and so on. My son had teeth at 4 months every baby is differnt, my cousins baby didn't get any teeth untill 14 months old. But don't worry, just make him as comfortable as possible. And good luck!

That sure sounds like a tooth. I didn't even notice that with my daughter... all of a sudden one day she had a small tooth poking out of her gums. I wouldn't worry.
