For my daughter's first halloween, I got this adorable baby elephant costume. I got tons of compliments on it because it was different. It would work for a boy or girl. And believe me, now that my daughter is three...this is still my favorite costume on her.
My son was less than 2 months old on his first halloween and let me tell you, its very hard to find something for infants younger or smaller than 12 months in size that is NOT original. lol. We bought a cute cute monkey costume from Old Navy and altered it.

My first question is What nickname does he have? Would it be fitting for a costume?
My oldest was "Heifer" ...per her father :)
Needless to say...she was a cow for her 1st Halloween. Luckily she still thinks it's funny.
My 2nd daughter was a very small Ladybug because I saw it and it was sooo cute. Altho I liked the peapod and the tootsie roll idea.

My son was Mickey Mouse last year because he loveeees Mickey. We got the costume from the Disney store in the mall & it was perfect, I couldn't have asked for anything better for his 1st halloween. And of course, Mickey is a classic.

My son was a frog, got the costume resale at Kid to Kid. I wasn't sure how he'd tolerate it. But I have also seen some SUPER cute ideas on Martha Stewart.com. There's one that I love where baby is a spider and mom is the web...awesome if you're crafty or someone you know is and your son is little enough to be in a snugli yet.

Get a square box that would "fit"him. Cut out the bottom to where only the sides are left. Take wrapping paper and wrap and use ribbon tied in bows as straps. He can where coordinating colored long pjs or a sweat suit. Second, take the same box... make it into a fire truck ... use black straps...follow me?
good luck.

This is our son's 1st Halloween too and we already got him his Tigger costume since his daddy loves Tigger, if he was a girl he would've been Pigglet. Good luck and try Babies r us. They already have them out.

I bought the cutest costume at Children's Place for my son last year (he was about 6 mo at the time). He was a skunk - I called him my little stinker! It was a great costume since I carried him the whole way during trick or treating and everyone could see the big white stripe down his back and knew what he was immediately:)

my sister in law did her two boys one year as a bat and baseball. The baby of course was a baseball (probably use the same pattern as a pumpkin). If you don't have an older kid to be the bat, you or hubby could just be a baseball player and walk next to him.

My son was a lion. He was 7 months old and it was the cutest thing I've ever seen. He had fur around his face and a long tail. I wish I could post a pic of it. I didn't want something typical either like a pumpkin. My oldest niece was a chili pepper for her first Halloween. Have fun!!!

For my son's first Halloween, he was "the center of the universe." We were older parents and he really was our "center of the universe." I bought a plain black one piece sweat suit and painted stars and planets all over it. It was very cute and original. Also, you need to consider something that is comfortable to wear.

I love Halloween and so many things come to mind. I do not know how old he is but starting if he is very young a pea pod, Banana, ice cream cone, a hot dog, all made like a bunting. a little older a bat, bee, a flower in a flower pot ( a real flower pot) ( I know he is a boy ) A lion, skunk or a mouse, a cow, or an angel ( also I know that he is a boy). Just have fun. My oldest was just started walking when her second Halloween came she was born October 28 and she was a clown with bells on her shoes and carried a dozen balloons she liked to carry things as she walked. Her first Halloween she was only days old but I dressed her as a pumpkin seed
and took a picture of he inside a large pumpkin.
P.S. Tuesday Morning last Chance in Addison has a very cute elephant costume if he is like six months old for like $5.
You can be creative with not much cost. For example, get a bright colored poster board and cut out a letter "P." Cut out the center of the round part for his face to fit through. Then use a little make-up (eye pencil or eye shadow works) and blacken his eye. He is a "black-eyed pea." This costume always got great reviews and comments from family and friends.

For our son's first Hollweeen we bought a long sleeve yellow onesie, black pants and a small set of wings (found at a craft store) and put black electrical tape around the yellow. He was a bee. He was comfortable and most of the costume was reusable for daily wear.

My little girl was a Hersheys Kiss. Silver dress, make it fluffy around the bottom and a silver witches hat with a white tag. There is a little bit more involved but you get the idea. Good Luck, I know it's hard to find just the right costume.

We did a dalmation for one of out kids, he was 2 months old. We got a white sweatshirt and white sweatpants, and black paint. I cut a sponge into a round shape and put black dots all over the suit. My Mom made a littie baby hat and put black ears on it, its was adorable and he was comfortable b/c the sweatsuit was cotton. Another year we each had a different colored sweatsuit, red, blue, green, yellow, and I cut out an "M" and glued on the front and we went as M&M's.
take care,
D.

Just an idea and maybe a cute "different" one. With it being an election year dress him up as your favorite candiate. A little suit with a little wig.....
