My daughter is making her First Communion next Sunday. After wards I was going to invite a group of 15 people - close family and friends - to lunch to celebrate. I had picked an Olive Garden near my house because it was in my budget and a nice place. Well, I just found out they are shut down for remodeling. So, I have having the party at my parent's house. We have the food set. I just wanted some tips on decorating and making the backyard look a little nicer. I don't have a big budget to work with so I am hoping for a few "do-it-yourself" ideas. Has anyone planned a First Communion party before or have any good ideas? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all, thank you for all the wonderful ideas! The party was great. We had a barbeque in the yard with carne asada, hot links and hot dogs. We also had rotesserie chicken. There were fruit and veggie trays and salads as well. I bought lilac table clothes. On the cake table, I layed out 2 crystal candle stick hoders with liac candles (the tall skinny ones) and had a crystal bowl surrounded by wheat and grapes (to symbolize the bread and wine). I also found some chalice decorations at party city. On the food table I had a vase with fresh flowers. The table looked very nice and everyone had a good time.

For a very easy center piece you can buy a potted Ivy at the plant store. If it's in one of those ugly plastic starters, just buy a nicer pot that it fits in snugly. Now go to Albertson's, Costco, Ralph's (where ever) and buy a small bunch of roses and/or carnations. (Perhaps white and/or pink.) Cut the Rose very short at an angle and push them into the Ivy. Voila! Inexpensive, Long lasting, and Looks like one you'd have bought from a florist. The Ivy works as the florists base and the green of the arrangment. as the rose buds start to open, it almost looks like a topiary. (spelling?) In a 7" pot I used 9 roses, but could have done just 7.
Hope she enjoys all you do for her! Have fun, -J

Definately go buffet style. Have lots of seating on a circular plan for easy conversation. Lots of fresh flowers. Calalilies and Daisies are great because they are inexpensive and since it's spring so there's plenty of them in the grocery store. And have LOTS of fun, this is a celebation of life and faith! Congratulations!

Other cute ideas, you can go to Walmart bakery and have her baptism picture put on the cake. It's always fun and a conversation starter and the kids usually like to hear about stories from when they were babies. Have fun with flowers and balloons. Girls love flowers and maybe even have a picture of her blown up at Kinkos ( they will put it on a nice piece of cardstock as big as you want) and have a nice pink or black marker for people to sign as they come in to write down wishes or memories for her to keep and keep on reading. use the same picture throughout to make it into a theme of sorts. Just try and make the day as special for her and make her feel like a princess.

Why not decorate with white balloons and party streamers, with white & pink table clothes and settings. If you still think it needs more decoration add a flower in a small vase. Go to http://www.firelady40.com/meanings.html for the meanins of flowers. I think carnations would be simple enough for a young girl, but yet still provide a nice aesthetic view.

For the tables you could set white table cloths, linen or paper, with small white & pink or white and yellow floral arrangements on each table.

As party favors you could buy some white organza, white, pink or yellow satin ribbon and some white jordan almonds. Cut the organza into big enough circles or some places sell them pre-cut in packages. Place a few almonds in the center, bring up the ends to make a little pouch then tie with satin ribbon. They make nice little favors.

Hey M.!
I have had 2 1st communions and another coming up the first weekend of May
1st one - We partied at my a local eaterie - they catered it nicely for us and put us in the corner of the establishment - no decorations except some balloons (fitting the celebtration)
We found white chocolate crosses (Left over from Easter I think) in boxes at a huge discount and printed the date, name etc and attahced them to the boxes as favors. Our local cake speciality shoppe did a wonderful celebatory cake.
Aside from balloons and the paperware - nothing else was needed - just clean.
2nd one - partied at our home - it was a beautiful day and we have a fantastic vieew and a large deck. This was very low key, rosaries in pretty little boxes as favors, cake from the specialty shoppe and decorative plates only. Cleaned the house, sweep off the deck....
3rd one - will be at a restaurant, I've ordered M&M's in cute little baggies (from the website) as favors, still need to attache date/name ribbons when they arrive. Haven't ordered the cake yet. We'll get balloons

Not much decorating to do for this kind event

A nice centerpiece idea. Dig out your child's baptism candle. Place both her baptismal candle and first communion candle on the table. You may want to add photos of those special days next to the candles. A great symbol of both sacraments.

Party City or the like should have paper plates & Napkins that are realated to this.

Also white streamers are good.

It is a casual party, so you don't really need to go overboard.

Maybe pics of you and/or husbands First Communiion as well.
