My 9 month old daughter just came down with her first cold (stuffy/ runny nose, cough, sneezing, raspy throat, and mild fever) and its been a not so good day for us. She wont sleep because she cant breathe and from what I have seen all of the Infants meds have been recalled. I got the Vicks Baby Rub but that hasn't helped much. Does anyone have any advice on how to ease this for her? I feel so bad because I know that there isn't much that I can do. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance mommies!

What can I do next?

I find the sudafed plug ins are great for relief. They are very strong but work well. Also, saline drops with the sucktion bulb (however much they hate it!) , a propped up matress and cool air mister (verses humidifier) are what come recommended by my boys dr's.
good luck! You will make it through this!!!

My son has had 2 colds and he is 8 months old. To help with the congestion we actually raised one end of the mattress to help the congestion to flow out and a cool humidifier next to the crib. He was able to sleep but woke up frequently at times. Hang in there it will get easier. Tylenol helps too at night.

Hi,
A couple things.. first I love baby vicks but a nice hot steamy bathroom and warm bath. I like to add a couple drops of lavendar and eucalyptus essential oil. The steam is really good as it helps loosen everything up. Also get some saline nose drops to help loosen the stuffy nose. Assuming you can still use the nose syringe thing, do that after you do the saline (Ocean is the brand name i think of the drops). Then use a humidifier. If laying flat also is causing problems, put a wedge or pillow (my boppy worked for this) under the head of the crib to give it a slope.

It's hard but I am sure she'll be fine. All the infant meds didn't work, which is why they recalled them. For additional solutions call your doctor (my doctor always told me that those things don't work).

You can get saline drops at almost any store. You put a few drops in each nostril (which she will hate), wait a bit then suction out her nose with a bulb syringe. Also a cold mist vaporizor can help to liquify the congestion. Just make sure you clean the vaporizor according to the directions. (Cold mist is better than warm mist, which can harbor germs more readily than the cold) You can help her sleep a little more comfortably by having her sleep in a semi-upright position, such as in a car seat. Also, keep a close eye on her for the next few days. We are entering the RSV season and it's really brutal for little ones. If your daughter seems to have a really hard time breathing, gets lethargic or just isn't acting right you should get her in to see someone right away.

I would get the Melaleuca Oil straight from Melaleuca, Inc. a wonderful shopping experience. They provide the highest grade oil with the medicinal value and it works wonders. My kids are never sick because I have them on the kids vitamins with a high absorption rate, but my oldest son has medical issues that causes him to get sinus infections on a chronic basis. He used to be on antibiotics EVERY month for 3 weeks at a time when he would come down with a sinus infection. Every since finding Melaleuca, I just put some of the Melaleuca Oil in his nose at the first sign of an infection and by the next morning, he is clear, no pressure and the infection just goes away. I got rid of a sinus infection myself last January and it has never returned. I don't exactly why this stuff works the way it does, but it is literally nature's first aid in a bottle. Just because something says it is tea tree oil, doesn't mean it has the medicinal value to it. You have to know where it came from and what grade it is. Melaleuca lists the exact grade oil you are getting right on the bottle. If you want more information, just let me know. Having a little one in the house, you would want to rid your home of all toxic chemicals by switching stores to Melaleuca and saving money in the process. These products are really safer to use and healthier to have around.

Hi H.:

Congratulations on your little girl! My son is just a month younger and getting over his first big cold too. If you haven't already tried a room humidifier -- I'd recommend that. It's not an absolute fix, but it should at least help ease her breathing a little.

Especially with the dry Colorado air, they get even more stuffy without any humidity. You'll want the cold-air type of humidifier because it is less likely to breed bacteria.

Or, in a pinch, putting her in a steamy bathroom, like they do for the croup can help too. It should at least loosen up everything so she'll be able to sneeze it out/cough it up a little better.

Good luck!

Two things to try. First, saline up the nose. There is a product called Ocean which works great at drying up the nose but you can also use regular saline if the ocean product is too expensive (runs about $6 for a small bottle). Also, steam your child in the bathroom. Close the doors let a hot shower run and sit beside the tub/shower with your baby girl. The hot humidity will help things clear up. Other then that a cool mist humidifier in her room. If she is still congested call your pediatrician. We've given our girl pedicare when all the above still did not help. They do have the infant brands still available but you would want to check with her doctor.

Hope the information helps.

Hi, H....

First colds are awful, aren't they? First, I would try some infant Tylenol for the fever. Since the recall on meds., the only thing I can think of that may help is a humidifier. If you can't get one now, try closing the bathroom door with hot shower water going, then take your baby into the bathroom and just let her breath in the moist warm air. This will help loosen her up and moisten her sinusus. She may cough a little, as the congestion breaks up. Also, have you tried the "nose sucker ball" that the docs gave you in the hospital? That'll help with the snot in the nose.. though SHE will hate it!

Hope this helps and good luck!

Get a cold mist humidifier you should also put her in the bathroom while the shower is running for the humidity it helps break up the mucus and let it drain. sleeping- try raising the bed in the front so that when she sleeps the mucus can drain at that age they cant use a pillow so you have to move the whole bed. old school- castor oil on the chest then heat an old onesie in the dryer and put it on after you rub on the oil, sucks up the cold. if your still nursing be sure to take vitamin c that can have immediate effects.

It actually could be teething. They get all of the same symptoms. If you feel her gums and they are swollen, it usually means that there will be a tooth popping through. My daughter has 6 teeth already at 8 months old and about 3 more are about to come through and she started to get the runny nose and raspy throat stuff again. but i can already see that one is about through. i just used a humidifier for her nose and i give her motrin. That is what the docs usually say to do. And really you cant do much. It just has to run its course. I know its hard. I hate suctioning her nose. It breaks my heart cause it makes her cough and cry.

I would recommend using a saline nose spray and then sucking the stuff clogging her breathing out. It's miserable to do but it really helps open their heads up. If she's a squirmer then place her head between your legs and tuck her arms under your legs to pin her down. Then you'll have both hands free to clean out her nose. I've been doing it 2x a day with my two lately! Yucky business :-).

There is also Triaminic Infant strips that I don't think have been recalled. They're simple to use and are already baby-sized. I hope she feels better soon!

Hi H.,

Not much you can do other than tylenol for fever and pain. My pediatrician recommends that you turn on the shower in you smallest bathroom and turn it all the way to hot let the bathroom get steamy and sit in there for 5-10 minutes 3 times a day, you can also use those shower tablets (i think they are made by vicks and they are called cold n shower) they disolve under the water and then the steam that is in the air has a decongestant affect. To keep her nose from staying stuffed up you should do 2-3 drops of saline into each nostril which will help loosen the congestion, if she will let you, you can use the sucker after. Try to keep her head elevated when she sleeps probably will have to put her in bed with you and put a pillow behind her.
Hope this helps

H.,
First of all congratulations to your daughter for making it this far and only having one cold! Now, that being said, have you taken her to the doctor? If so, have they tested her for RSV since it is the season?

My son had bronchiolitis around 4 months and ever since then we have had coughs and runny/stuffy nose. It could also be allergies and is she teething too?

I also use the Vicks rub and we bought a cool mist vaporizor for his room that we religiously turn on at night for him. It helps to break up the junk. Also, use the nasal aspirator even though she might not like it. Little Noses pus out Saline Spray so if she is stuffed up it will help to loosen the phlegm so you can suction it out. My pediatrician says that colds usually last for about 10 days from the time you see symptoms.

Like you said, you can't use a whole lot on infants. Good luck, she will get over it, it just might take some time. :)

By the way, thank your daughter's father for all of the hard work he is doing to keep our country safe. :)

I'm sorry that your daughter is not feeling well. What i tend to do is if she can't sleep because of a stiffy nose use saline a couple of drops in each nose and use a booger bulb to get it out. She might cry when you do this but it well help her sleep better and longer. For her fever a littler bit of tyelnol and ibprofen will do the job. Her cough will go away on it's own. I hope that this well help.

There is so much good information and suggestions here I don't have much to add. But from what I can tell, the drug recalls DO have to do with parents overdosing the kids more than anything. And I am not anti-drugs, but a cold is just a virus and has to run its course. Trying to keep your little one comfortable in the meantime is #1. Talk to your doctor and see what OTC medicine and what dosing he/she suggests. The dosing is the key part. And chin up - I am sure Cambria will be better in no time!

Unless she is running a temperature, many pediatricians do not like parents to give their babies medicines at that young of an age, since she has not built all of her immune systems yet. Continue with the Baby Vicks Vapor Rub and make sure that she does not have anything in her nose before you lay her to down to sleep. If she runs a fever, give her some Tylenol and a luke warm bath. The bath will bring down the fever immediately to a point.

A humidifier is a great help. I have a swamp cooler to cool my house during the summer and as soon as that goes off at night, I break out the humidifiers for the girls.

Also, you know how it's easier to breathe when you're propped up? Well, that is the same for babies. When my youngest gets sick (like she is now) I put a thin pillow under one end of her mattress in her crib. It props up one end and helps her breathing. The drawback to this plan is that she turns around during the night!!

A humidifier is a must when she sleeps. Try saline drops for her nose. Try letting her drink from your cup which is easier than a bottle when your nose is stuffy. Give her lots of pedialyte. Get the pedialyte popsicles to soothe her possible sore throat. I think they have them at walmart. There are some over the counter mads that have not been recalled. I am not sure which ones........there are so many. Ask your pharmasist...he'll know for sure. Poor thing. My 2 year old doesn't get sick that often....maybe 3 colds in 2 years. But I always get right on the pedialyte and now that she is 2 she gets orange juice. She got a cold a month ago when the weather changes and I gave her OJ everyday and she got over it in less than a week. Extra vitamin C I guess. So keep that in mind for the future. 9 months is a little early to give OJ since it is so acidic and might give her bottom problems.

You can put her and you in the bathroom and run the shouer on hot to make plenty of steam...sit in there as long as you can it will break up all of the mucus. Also get a humidifer and put that in the main room of the house that she is in, that will also help, but don't forget to move it into her room when she is ready to go to sleep. you can also put baby vicks on her feet then put her in something with socks. I know that it sounds weird but it helps my baby.

Good Luck.

My Sister-in-law shared this with me in an e-mail...

NEW USE FOR VICKS

WOW! I was raised, and raised my kids with Vicks. How come I never knew
this?
I can't wait for my next cough. Amazing! READ IT ALL.
It works 100 percent of the time, although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why.
To stop nighttime coughing in a child (or an adult, as we found out personally), put Vicks Vapor Rub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime and then cover with socks.
Even persistent t, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about five minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief.
This works 100 percent of the time and is more effective in
children than even very strong prescription cough medicines.
In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.
I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in
children as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure.
I just happened to tune in to a.m. Radio and picked up this guy talking
about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs, so I listened.
It was a surprising finding and found to be mor e effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime and in addition to
have soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on t0 sleep soundly.
My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and
persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100 percent! She said
it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her. The coughing stopped in a few minutes, and believe me, this was a deep (incredibly
annoying!),every few seconds, uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night she used it. If you have grandchildren, pass it on.

If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by
the effect.

Blessings,
C.

For coughing or discomfort with a dry raspy throat, get her into a steamy bathroom to inhale all that moisture.

For a stuffy nose, use saline drops to loosen up the snot and then suck it out with a bulb syringe.

For fever, let it run its course unless she is very uncomfortable. The fever is the body trying to "burn" off the bug causing her illness. To drop a fever that is too high, then place her in a cool bath or administer acetaminophen.

Always consult with your baby's doc before doing anything you hear on the internet, wink, wink.

Hi H.,
When my little one is stuffed up, a steamy shower loosens a lot of that mucus and relaxes her for a nice nap. We are battling a bad cold right now too, but she just turned two so we are able to take the meds on the shelf.

It was my understanding from the doctor that the meds were pulled because parents were administering meds & dosage on their own and over dosing children. Your doctor should be able to tell you how much medication to give a child based on his or her weight. I would check with the doc first just to be sure there isn't an ear or bronchule infection.

First off, the vicks on the feet thing was NOT endorsed by CNR:

Warm baths will help with drainage, but be sure to keep fluids in her (whether that be breastmilk, formula, or water). For the naysayers on the Vicks, I know what Snopes and the like says, but that IS the remedy that my grandfather gave us - liberal on the bottom of feet, but you gotta wear socks. His remedies usually work, and the Vicks HAS worked for us in the past - even us adults. Prop up her mattress on one end (just a little will work wonders), and use a saline nasal spray (the cheapo brand in Wal-Mart should work, just ask one of the pharmacists or aides to point you in the right direction - a good one is the one in the blue and orange package) and suction stuff out of her nose. It's hard to do anything for a raspy throat at this point, but for further info, once she's older, warm water will help that, as well as warm peppermint tea (which also helps with stomach aches), and when she reaches hard-candy level, the peppermint candies help with upset stomachs, as well as gingersnaps.

Good luck!

I remember those nights. haha. Well when my girls got sick I would give them a bath with the Johnsons vapor bath beforew bed then rub on the vicks and also I had a humidifier or a voporiser in there room at night. The vaporiser has medcastion you can put in them to help. With my girls I went with the vicks vaporiser and used the medication that you can buy seperet. If you don't know witch is best, you can always go to walgreens and ask the pharmasisit. they can be loads of help when your little one isn't feeling so good. That might help her sleep better. AS for the day there are lots of things that will help, you just have to find the brand that works the best. With my girls tryaminic or tylonal brands worked for me, but it all depends on your baby. My friends daughter always responded to robitusen. So take your pick and if she isn't doing better within 2 hours try another brand. At night the vaporiser does wonders.

My kids have colds right now as well. I just saw their doctor yesterday and asked what I could do to make my 5 month old feel better. She said to use a humidifier in his room and give him Tylenol every 4 hours to keep his fever down. You should also make sure that your baby girl is getting lots of liquids and staying out of the cold. Lastly, you should suck the snot out of her nose 4 times a day with an aspirator to prevent a sinus infection. To remember, I do it every time I give them their medication which is every four hours. I would also keep an eye out for any sign of an ear infection (drainage, pulling on her ear, etc).

I was told my a pharmacist that the reason there are no cold medications available for children under two is because parents were using them to make their babies sleep. In my opinion that is a horrible thing to do and I could not believe that some parents did that!! I hope your baby feels better soon!

hi H. -

I do oriental medicine called Jin Shin Jyutsu and there is a wonderful point that you can hold that helps when anyone when sick, but children respond particularly quickly to it. Gently place a couple of your fingers on each upper inside corner of her shoulder blade. So just below her neck between the shoulder blade corner and her spine on each side. Hold until you feel a gentle balanced pulse on each side. This could be anywhere from a minute to 15 minutes. Results can be miraculous. One mother found her child well in 5 minutes and she thought she was going to make a doctor's visit and a prescription.

Gently rubbing the bottom of her feet can move the congestion and also relax her.

I'd also offer that grains are the last food that should be added to a child's diet, rather than the first. The digestive tract isn't ready for them until after a year old. Foods that aren't good for you child can look like rashes and colds, etc. Additionally, if you are breast feeding whatever you eat is passed on to your daughter and can cause problems. You can also provide medicine to her this way, such as herbs or herbal teas.

For the long haul it would be well worth you while to learn some simple homeopathy and get a home kit. It is an especially elegant form of rebalancing and children and animals respond very quickly.

I have 24 years of hard won knowledge that I'm grateful to get to share, hopefully you find something here of value.

Just a couple things to add -- the Vicks thing may not have been "endorsed", but it is a folk remedy that has been around for YEARS and will not hurt. Also baby drugs have not been recalled. They do not recommend you give your baby OTC meds because they don't have the right dosage listed on the bottle. Consult your doctor for the correct dosage. Personally I don't believe you should give your child meds unless it's absolutely necessary, but I HAVE given my children cold medicines to relieve their symptoms - escpecially at night. They sleep better & therefore get better faster. Definitely a hot steamy (shower) room for croup-like coughing, but right after take her outside -- something about the "shock" to the larnyx. Use a humidifier. And don't forget to keep your health in check. Passing it around the family & having someone sick for a month is not fun either. Check out this book - my pediatrician recommended it to me when my first child was born. "Your Child's Health" by Barton D. Schmitt, M.D., F.A.A.P. It talks about illnesses, behaviors, etc. for babies all the way through older children. Hope your family gets well soon!
