So What Happened?

Well what an event. We had the party at my parents. We had about 40 guest. We got two pizzas from pudgies.( If you are ever in williamsport Pa Pudgies pizza is a must) We had cakes and cupcakes. We got a gallon of ice cream and made root beer floats.
After everyone ate it was cake time. This brought me mixed emotions. I never let my daughter play with her food. After telling her "hands down" for a year she learned to eat clean and neat. This brings me to the moment were we place a cake in front of her. Every one is ready to snap a picture. She refuses to put her hands in the cake. When we urged her she kept her hands down. We then told two of the boys who are two years old to dig in. As we cheered at them, she started slapping the cake. Then it was on. She smeared cake everywhere. I am so happy for the advise to lay something under her highchair. It was one of my favorite moments.
The gifts were fun to open. It felt like my b-day. She got a doll. My parents got it for her. It is about her size. And it looks so real it is creepy. So now I have a creepy doll I have to keep around so my mom sees its there.
It went so fast. My mother in law never showed. She said she was sick. This made all the tension relieved. Now the only bitter person is my wife. Because her mom bailed. Have a great day.

For my twin sons 1st bday we did a football party and had everyone wear something from their favorite teams and we had the twins in their jerseys (I'm a Steeler's fan so one was in a Steeler's jersey and my husband is a Falcon's fan so one was in a Falcon's jersey) and we did the whole house in football stuff. Since they were so young and since we mainly had our friends and family there, not that many kids, we couldn't play games or anything. I think just by them being the bday boys, they were the center of attention by themselves. We had 1st bday bibs on them and that helped them stand out some. I would maybe do a princess type of party and have her in a gorgeous dress with a tiara that has a 1 on it or something. Check party city or online for ideas.
Also, if you have a Giant or a Wal-Mart near you they give free 1st bday cakes that are small for the birthday girl to dig into. We had to get 2 because we had 2 babies and Giant was so accommodating and our cake was great (we did a football field with the Steelers on one side and the Falcons on the other). I hope this helped some, please let me know how things go.

We have a family tradition of the birthday baby gets their own chocolate cake to smash and play with and make a big mess. We had my daughter's party at a private room of a restaurant, so we put down a plastic tablecloth under her high chair, and gave her the cake (which I baked myself according to what she was able to eat at the time) and all she did was grab a few handsful and smush it around. Didn't even taste it! LOL. Most of the babies in my family have smeared themselves head to toe with chocolate frosting and had a grand ol time with it though. It's a lot of fun for everyone else to gather around and watch. We had a bakery sheet cake to cut for everyone else.

Congrats! We are celebrating my son's first birthday this year, too. I got a lot of decorations from www.birthdayexpress.com They have some great things. As far as how to deflect from other family members to the birthday girl, I would make it clear to those involved, this is a VERY special day for your little girl and it is HER day. Whatever issues they may have, they can leave them at the door. If they don't like that, too bad. You should not have to worry about someone stealing her sunshine on such a happy occassion. Good luck and have a wonderful day ! S.

Hi, I a similar question a little while ago. People suggested looking at oriental trading company, which I had never heard of. They are great, inexpensive and have some good ideas. My son LOVES rubber ducks, so we are going to do a rubber ducky theme! They have all kinds of rubber ducks! Find something she really seems to like and then plan a theme around that. My son also loves bubbles, balloons and cheerios, so we are going to tie that in (shouldn't be hard). I think we are going to put cheerios in a small blow-up baby pool and then put the rubber ducks on it. The kids can play in the cheerios and grab the ducks! Fun! Anything unique and different will take attention away from any akwardness and something your daughter will love will make the day special for her!

For my daughter's first b-day, I did a flower theme and bubbles. So for the activity I got all kinds of different bubble wands from the dollar store and put them in a basket. Then the kids went crazy blowing bubbles. For the favors each kid got a decorative glycerine soap that I got for a buck a piece at Micheal's. Girls got princess ones and boys got frogs. Even the big boys liked them. And Micheal's always has them for each different holiday.
The decorations were all flowers, instead of a big cake we had flower cupcakes. I had a local cake baker put one of four different flowers on them, sunflower, pansey, dark pink gerber daisy, orange mums. We dressed her up in a flowery dress and a tiara.
For food we had different kinds of small sandwiches, italian meats on hard rolls from Panera, smoked salmon cream cheese spread on mini bagels, peanut butter smuckers uncrustables for the kids taste buds. A pasta salad that I sprinkled the top with edible flowers from Whole Foods for a side dish.
Good Luck.

Hey S.,I recommend checking out kidzone.com. It is an awesome site all for children. It has craft ideas, songs, and even things to do at parties! I love this site, and I find it to be a wonderful source of cool activities for kids. Check it out, and let me know what you think. Also, I would just remind the in-laws that this party isn't about them, it's about the birthday girl. Tell them to check their indifferences at the door:) Good luck, and I hope she has a great time at her party!

acme usually does the cake for free for the first birthday. and if you don't think the size is big enough, you could always get another. i always rented a hall for the kids first b-days. i had a ton of balloons for my first daughter's b-day. we had the "girlie" first birthday party decor. i put her in a really frilly dress and i did the face painting for the kids and we had a pinata and cupcakes along with everyone in the hall surrounding her when it was time to sing. but, when you're one you really don't understand why all these people are paying so much attention to you! good luck!
