Hi there...we're getting ready to celebrate my son's first birthday and I'd like to have a small cake that he can dive into on his own. What kind of cake or cake-substitute is okay for a one-year old to have? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice! I decided to just relax and let him start being a kid. I got a small cake for him and let him have at it. He was a little shy at first, but once he got going there was icing everywhere! It was a hoot and I'm so glad I have the pictures to prove it. Thanks Mamas for helping me to relax and enjoy!

I did cupcakes, mini for all his friends and a regular sized (but big as far as he was concerned) for my son.... he mostly ate the frosting, but loved it and I knew he wasn't OD-ing on sugar, etc.

If you really want him to dive into it (which I HIGHLY recommend!!!) just get one of the mini-cakes from the grocery store for that purpose. They are very inexpensive - like $5 and they look great in a photo. Then, have a good cake for everyone else to eat. Have fun!!!

They can have ANY kind of cake! Don't worry about dairy or anything like that (unless he's actually allergic of course) because this is when they can start tollerating that stuff. Let him be a kid!

I did cupcakes for my son's first birthday. Both the adults and kids liked them. Giving a 1 year old cake is not bad. Just don't give him a ton! Congratulations on completing your first year of mommy-hood. :)

Some grocery stores will actually give you a small first birthday cake for free if you purchase a cake for your guests. Albertson's does this out here in Vegas so you might want to check in your area to see if any stores near you offer such a thing. I just let my daughter dig in to the cake and she had a blast. She probably only ate two bites so there was no sugar overload. She had more fun playing with the cake than eating it.

Totally agree .... a cheap one from the grocery is perfect! They are smaller and cost around 5 dollars, so it is great. Plus, unless you were planning on spending a ton for a bakery cake, they taste just fine! Just be sure to strip your baby down to nothing but a disposable diaper .... less mess to clean afterwards! Be ready for some great pictures!

Both of my munchkins had their own small cake to smush in. they didn't eat much at all-just made a big mess and laughed like crazy. One tip though-don't use red icing or other dark/bright colors that can stain. I made this mistake with my son... Some grocery stores even make the first b-day cake for free.

I agree, just get your son his own mini-cake or cupcake. Don't worry about the sugar. My daughter was so tired from not wanting to nap with all the visitors and didn't like the feeling of the frosting sticking to her fingers that she barely ate 2-3 bites. You won't create a sugar monster from this one experience.

I asked the same exact theing two weeks ago! Just about everyone told me to chill out and let him have his first indulgence of sweets... I ended up making him his own banana cake ( he loves, loves, loves bananas and it made me feel like it was healthy- so not true) with a cream cheese/ whipped cream frosting. He didn't over do it- and it was fun!
