Firefighter/Paramedic B Shift Wife Looking for Daycare 2 Days per Week

I live in Lakewood, Ohio and my husband is a firefighter/paramedic who works 24 on 48 off but works about 45 minutes away so we don't know many firefighters and/or wives in the area. We are having a baby in July and will need care starting in October. My husband was planning on staying home on his off days and getting care for the days he works. It would be 2 days per week. All of the quality daycare centers in the area require specific days per week which we cannot commit to since his work schedule is every third day continuously. The days will change every week. We would also consider a stay at home mom who would like to pick up 2 days per week of work. I am having a lot of challenges trying to find care for this schedule requirement and am considering just going full time day care becase it is so hard to find. Are there any other A or C shifters who would will need infant care and would want to collaborate? Or are there any B shift moms who also provide daycare? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Another service to consider is your local child care resource and referral service. They are national and non-profit and the organization that is the point for this service is also the group that is running the training and early childhood education for teachers (even in-home!) in your area.

http://www.naccrra.org/
, use this site to find your local service.
Here it is only $10 to get quality leads on 5-7 child care solutions OH! and they ask you what you are looking for - "i need part time care on a rotating basis from X hour to X hour with a formal curriculum" They will work on your behalf to find licensed folks who you can then call and visit. The good thing is before you ever walk in the door, yiou know they can do what you need.
I used this in TX and it was great to find afterschool care in a pinch for my (then) Kindergartener.

You will most likely have a better acting child who feels the stability of having a set schedule to go somewhere. It will be easier in the long run.

Plus full time child care is often less expensive than part time. They charge you by the day and on that one day they have to have an extra teacher so it costs them more. If they have your child in the full time slot they have the same amount of teachers every day, they don't have to hire one that just comes in randomly.

That didn't say it right. When a child care center has a baby room they can usually have 4 baby's per teacher. If they have 8 baby's in there that means they have 2 teachers. If those baby's pay $30 per day times 8 baby's that is $240 per day that room pulls in. If the teachers are making $8 per hour the center pulls that out of that rooms budget, they've spend $128 out of that $240 for staffing costs. Then they have the cost of food for the oldest in the classroom. Even if they are spending $15 per day on staffing and food for that classroom they are making $90 for overhead costs and profit.

If they have 9 babies in that classroom one or two days per week they end up spending $64 times 3 for just staffing alone. Then they are feeding an extra teacher too. So they make a lot less money, about $44. That's not a lot to put towards the utility bills, insurance, cooks wages, directors wages, or even for profit to support your own family. So they charge that one person a bigger child care rate to offset the extra staffing and just plain out hassle.

The only way they can benefit and make this work and cheaper is to fill those other 2-3 days per week with another child to make 2 kids together one full time slot. That's why they really need a commitment and can't take a child on random days of the week. So they'll charge even more.

So if your baby is one of the original 8, they have a set schedule to be there and they hold a full time place your charge will usually be a lot less than a drop in type situation.

All in all, it will be easier on your child is they go to the same place the same time the same days of the week. This makes them happier and allows the center to have less stress and get to know your child better and bond with them.

the best choices are a nanny to come to your home.. or a mom at her own home that would like the 2 day a week of babysitting.

we have kindercare centers here that will allow nurses that do 12 hour shifts 2 different days each week. and they work with them on the schedule. some day cares are very flexible...

but day cares are so germy for infants.. try to find a sitter.

So if he works a 24 he obviously is gone for a day. So you need Childcare from what 9 to 5 two days a week? My husband was a police officer and worked shifts. My kids went to an friend who babysat. Did not mind the different days. Put up notices at library and church. You should be able to find someone for two days. Heck if I lived close to you, I would do it. Word of mouth should help too.

Welcome to mamapedia!!!

Have you considered a nanny?

Personally I would do full time day care. It offers your child and your family stability for your rotating schedule.

I take it you work full time too? Have you considered relocating to an area closer to your husband's work? I bet that's a long commute after the stressful job he has....unless he uses that time to wind down.

Consider full time day care or a nanny. I know it's a hard decision!!

GOOD LUCK!!
