Finding Pants That Fit My 5Yo Boy...

My son is 5yo, very tall and very thin. He wears a 5 or 5T pant for length (and some of these are getting short so we are close to needing a 6), but his waist is closer to a 3T. So, I buy adjustable waist pants and tighten them as tight as they will go, then put a belt on him.

The problem is they still fall down and he has a "plumbers crack' showing nearly all the time. I HATE seeing his bum hanging of the top of his pants. What can I do to fix this? He has a very small rear and the pants just slide right down. Kindergarten is coming up in a few months and I don't want him teased for it.

Please help me!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your responses. I had a gift card for Gymboree, so I started there...the 5 slims were too short, bu the 6 slims are PERFECT!!! The very nice sales lady even checked the back for me and found 3 pairs marked down to only $10. I will be on the look out at Old Navy and look for some Wranglers as well.

I had no idea they even made a "slim" fit!! You guys are awesome, thank you so very much!!

I too, have found the Slim sizes of Levi's to be a life-saver. I had quite the string bean for a while, and we always did well with Levi's. The down side is that they have such a wide range of styles, each of which has a different fit, so trying-on is an absolute necessity.

Best wishes,
B.

I have a boy who is very thin also. We have found buying sweatpants and taking them in on the sides works well(he has a hard time tying ). We also have ended up buying him jeans and dress pants @ Lands end. They carry slims that are adjustable via the elastic belt built into the pants. They can be a little pricey but they have always held up well. Another option we found when my son was that age was healthtex clothes tended to run small in the waist and long in the legs.
Hopes this helps.

JC Penney and Old Navy had SLIM pants. They start at size 5. Do not buy toddler sizes as thy are sized to fit with a diaper.

They are usually very easy to find. 2 of my 3 boys are sticks so I know where you are coming from! My youngest is going to be a husky, just like his uncle!!

I have this problem with my 7yo, although it sounds like your little guy might be even more slender than mine. I've been able to do okay with the adjustable waists most of the time. Some brands (like Gap) have slim sizes, which could help also. Sometimes you can get tall sizes too, so buy a smaller size in tall to account for his height. If you know of a decent tailor, you could always buy pants in the correct length and have them tailored to fit his waist - around here I think it's about $5-6 per pair for that alteration. Good luck - I know how frustrating it can be!

One of my boys has the same problem. The slimmest cut I could find so far is OSH KOSH Slim. The RN# of the particular pair we have is 96367, but it's a size 7 and I'm not sure if it would be the same in a different size.

Hope this helps.

My step son has this problem. He needs and 10 for length but an 8 for waist.

The best place I have found to get pants is Gap. In his size they have slim. They are also an adjustable waist. This works great becasue we can tighten them and they actually get small enough and don't fall down when he's running!

You could go online and see if they carry size 5 slim. A lot of brands (like gap, old navy and gymboree, Levi's) carry more sizes online than they do in stores.

You could also google 5 slim adjustable waist jeans. I'm sure you'll get something.

I stopped buying the toddler clothes and went to the big boys department at size 4. They have 4 slims, 5 slims, etc...I would try those on him and see if they fit better.

My son is also long-legged and slim. We found wind pants from Costco, Target, and Old Navy to be the answer. They have an elastic waist and fit snug yet have longer legs. Some are even made to roll up, which we don't have to do.

Have you tried Slims? My son always wears jeans in the slim sizes, he's 10 now and wears a 10 slim.
Good luck

I have a 6 yr old wearing that same size. I found pants at JC Penney. They are the only place I can find pants to fit him. If you go to the little boys section, not the toddler section, they have 4 and 5 slims! They are also adjustable waist. They fit great and my little guy likes them because they don't look like toddler pants anymore. If you watch too at JC Penney, they send out $10 off coupons off a $10 purchase! You end up paying $3 for a pair of jeans and sometime they have a buy one (sale price too) and get another pair for 50% off. Good luck.

Sounds like my son when he was that age. I kept him in overalls and suspenders until he was 7. The suspenders fit on any pants and they come in all kinds of colors so he can make a unique fashion statement.
They slip off easily for going to the restroom too. Saved my sanity till he grew into the slim sizes around size 7. You will probably have to go to a kid's clothing to find them-not a department store-but they are worth it.

My little one is in the same boat. We just buy brands that carry "slim" sizes. These seem to help out a lot. I know that GAP Kids carries slims, Wrangler, and maybe Levi's (not sure about the last one). Otherwise, I don't know of any. I'm sure there are others, though. We have mostly bought jeans from Children's Place and really sinch the waist up in the past, but we are going the slim route lately. He just gets taller, not wider! Good luck!

Ms. Maretta, I have had the same exact problem with my boy since he's been about 4... He will be 8 tomorrow. I have found for him, the best brands are wrangler and faded glory from walmart.. My son is about 4'5 and has a 24" inseam.. with NO waist and NO butt.. I found these brands to be the best w/ the length and the adjustable waist.. Good luck

Try slim size pants. A number of brands carry them, including Lands' End, Children's Place, Gymboree, Crazy 8 and Old Navy. Most are not just in slim size overall, but have an adjustable waist, so the entire pant fits well.

I have done this many times for my kids and then for my grand-kids:
Open the seam of the belt at the bottom , near the side seam, one inch opening on each side, on the inside of the pants (buy a seam ripper at JoAnn or Hancock...$2). Buy elastic and insert through one hole with a safety pin that will drive the elastic through the casing of the belt part. Before you pull too much, secure the almost end of your elastic near the entry hole with strong stitches across the belt part, then pull the pin and elastic through the exit hole, stretch as necessary, secure the other end of the elastic same way as other end, cut any extra elastic, et voila! Good luck!

For my son, I buy mostly sweatpants. They are cheaper at Walmart and maybe The Children's Place. The ones without the elastic at the bottoms of the legs look nicer. Then, I sew a line on each side of the waistband about 1/2 inch from the edge. Since he doesn't tuck in his t-shirt, this will be covered. I use a stitch that can be removed later if he outgrows it. The adjustable-waist pants and belts seemed kind of bulky and made it harder for him to get dressed and go the bathroom independantly.

I was going to suggest gap. I've had great luck with that brand. Also, my MIL is a seamstress. I believe she charges about $5-6 for something like that. Might be worth having done. Poor little guy. My son is tall too, but it's all in the torso and arms. LOL.
