My son has been taking medication for Bipolar disorder since March and because of the meds has put on a lot of weight. I was shopping for school clothing for him and could only get him shorts because he needed a size 10 in boys, and he's only 5. I need to get him pants but don't know where to look for some because he's a normal height for a 5 year old but a little bigger in the tummy, and pants that fit his waist are just way to long...is it even possible to get kids clothing hemmed? No i don't want nutritional advice on the issue, his drs are all aware of his weight gain, and no he doesn't eat constantly. I'm just looking for clothing advice.
thanks for all the advice :) and yes his meds have helped i have my sweet boy back most days.. JCP was the only store that even had shorts that would work for him...now that i know dry cleaners will hem kids clothing i can finish clothing shopping for him and get him some pants! yay
My niece was large, wearing a size 12 girls clothes when she was in kindergarten. My sil bought her capris for pants but also bought girls pants and worked with a seamstress to hem them all at a better price as they wanted $2 per leg. I think she ended up paying 75 cents per leg. They did not look horrible or anything, just shorter. For the nicer pants, she had a cuff put on.
Yes, you can get kid's clothing hemmed. I would buy him clothes that he feels comfortable in, and that he likes, then get them hemmed. :)

Many dry cleaners have someone that does alterations...not usually cheap though!
Hemming is not hard...might give it a whirl yourself! They even make a 'no sew' iron 'in' hem tape that may help!

I hem pants all the time for people. Im sure if you ask at a fabric store, they might give you the name of someone who does it near you. Might be cheaper than a dry cleaners too. Wash them first, so if they shrink you arent left with too short later.And as fast as kids grown, you might have them leave some extra hem inside to let down later. Wish you lived closer to me,, Id do it.
Have you tried JCPenney for plus sizes? I know that have them for girls.
We've had some luck with Gap husky sizes for our guy - our local dry-cleaner does the hemming - not cheap, but I try not to think about it and figure it's better than having him run around naked - LOL

Kristen went through a rough spot when she was sporting a little tummy for a year. We bought plus sized, I am pretty sure they call it Husky for boys. Also look for brands that offer the adjustable waists those are so helpful. With as young as he is I might consider looking into elastic waist band pants and see how that goes. I do not know if you can still find them, but Tyler had a terrible time with zippers and I know he even had jeans with elastic waist bands in the younger years of elementary school.

Also yes, you can get kids clothes hemmed, check in the yellow pages for seamstress or call around to some dry cleaners as some dry cleaning services do alterations.
I agree with other moms about trying out a husky boys section so they will have pants that fit his length. You can definitely get them hemmed. He probably won't stand there for a seamstress but if you roll them so the bottom is where you want them and measure the length from the top of the pants you can take them. If you do that I'd start getting pants on sale b/c a seamstress can be $10 a pair (around here). I have had a tankini tightened, a halloween costume altered, a child's dress taken in so it didn't look like a trash bag lol, etc. I never thought you could alter some of those "odd" things but you can. If you get a sewing machine or borrow one you could do it yourself. My mom used to hem my pants and turn my pants into shorts when I was a child.

Yes, you can hem kids clothes. I would ask then for a large hem, or a cuff so you can let them down when he grows a bit. Also....as the other person mentioned, make sure to wash and dry them first so that any shrinkage happens before you shorten them! If he doesn't have to wear a uniform for school, maybe some sweat pants with elastic at the bottom of the leg whe it gets cooler...they will stay above his shoes so he doesn't wok in them and grow with him. My daughter has to wear a uniform, navy bottoms, and when it is cold I send her in navy sweats and they work our great, and they've never mentioned it at the school, as being a problem. Good luck! Try in stores that carry Husky sizes. These will fit around the waist but are shorter than regular sizes.
