Finding a Pediatrician

Hi. I am new to Austin and am looking for a pediatrician who is supportive of extended breastfeeding and alternate vaccination schedules. I live near Lamar and Koenig, and while a convenient location is good, I don't mind driving to see a doctor that I like.

Oh, has anyone heard of Helen Ma? She is an Osteopathic doctor on our insurance plan...

What can I do next?

We take my son to Capital Pediatrics as well. He sees Dr. Brown. I don't believe you can go wrong with anyone there. They even have a lactation specialist on staff that I went to when I was having some difficulty with my milk production. She was terrific. We've also seen Dr. Ma once when I was still in the hospital and another couple of visits when Dr Brown was out. We thought she was terrific. Good luck and welcome!

Hi H.!
We go to Central Family Practice on 34th near Lamar. It's kind of a Western meets Eastern type of practice. We see Dr. Eliot Trester, MD. But there is a naturopath on staff as well.

Welcome to Austin!
Also, if you're looking for groups (and it fits your parenting style) -- there is a very active Attached Parenting group(s) here in Austin...north, central and south with loads of subgroups discussing nutrition, education, etc.

Yes, Helen Ma is with Capital Pediatrics, that is where we go. We have seen her once or twice, but I found another doctor in that practice that I adore, her name is Dr. Treybig... Dr., Ma is nice, I didn't realize she is as Osteopathic.. They are very close to you, on Medical Pkwy and 38th and 1/2... Their phone number is ###-###-####.. Good luck... J. Also, Dr. Brown is in that practice, she wrote the Baby 411 and Toddler 411 books, is always on t.v. It is a good practice..

My husband & I really like Dr. Wesley Glazener. He has really worked with us on the vaccination schedule for our son. He has split up the shots (so he's not getting 5 at once). And there are even some he thinks may be optional depending on whether they are in daycare. Here's his info:

I just moved from Austin 2 weeks ago, but noticed your post. (I was about to remove myself from the list.) I was very happy with Bee Caves Pediatrics. My daughter is now 4 1/2 and we went there since her birth. Dr. David Ruiz was incredible and unfortunately (for us) he retired last year. When he retired, I floated around meeting different doctors at different appointments. My preferred docs in the practice that seem most open to alternative therapies, vaccinations, etc. have been Dr. Angie Parr and Dr. Lydia Norton. They are my preferred choices simply because of my own personal experiences--their support of questions about vaccinations and schedule, some symptoms my daughter experienced that they were in tune with, and some alternative therapies that we pursued. Their website is http://www.beecavespediatrics.com
Good luck! I hope you find a right fit for you and your family. I am now searching for a new pediatrician in our new town.
peace,
K.

Bee Caves Pediatrics. My midwife has worked with them for 20 years.

Pediatric Associates is off 38th, right by Shoal Creek, across from Seton. I'm still breastfeeding my 19 mos old and he's on a delayed vaccination schedule and we love all the Drs there. Dr. Owens is still breastfeeding her 2.5 yr old so that says something! Dr Hargrave is our Ped. I'm not sure if they are taking new patients though as they are one of the few practices that will take non-vaxed kids. Welcome to Austin!

I second the response from Juliet -- we also go to Capital Pediatric Group and have a different primary care provider (Dr. Kibler) but also have seen Dr. Ma. She was super nice, informative, and very energetic. You can attend a "Meet the Doctors" night at Capital Pediatric Group and hear what the various doctors have to say, ask questions, and generally get a feel for their practice. I know that CPG is VERY supportive of breastfeeding, but I don't know about alternative vaccination schedules.

Helen Ma is one of the physicians at Capital Pediatrics, right? We take our boys to another one of the partners there (Ari Brown, who we love) so we have seen Dr.Ma many times as well. I've always been impressed. She is easy to talk to and sweet with the kids. Don't know about her opinions on extended breastfeeding or vaccinations. That office does do "open house" type "meet the doctors" regularly, so you should go check them out.

Another vote for Bee Cave Pediatrics, ask for Dr. Hudson. Don't like the other doc in the practice as much as him.
