I am thirty six weeks pregnant with my second daughter and I got pregnant with her while taking yaz. I had written a request previously about how upset I was because I was pregnant again so soon. I'm over it now and I'm ready for my little girl to arrive any day now. My oldest daughter will be turing one October 3, 2009 and my due date is October 20, 2009. What an exciting month ahead of me. But after I'm off of cloud nine, I need to find a new birth control. I was thinking of and IUD. Has anyone had any known complications with this birth control? Can your partners feel it??? I need some feed back befor I make a decision. Thanks

What can I do next?

I love my Mirena too - I got it about 3 months after the birth of my daugther. at first I had a lot of spotting and cramping, but after a few weeks nothing - I've hardly had even spotting since then. No periods, period. It's great! Dr. tucked the strings back so my hubby can't feel it at all. And I don't have any of the headaches and stuff I used to get on the pill, plus I don't have to remember to take it.

Congratulations W. on the anticipation of your new arrival! I understand exactly where you are coming from and the decision you are trying to make because I have just experience something similiar. Many women and Doctors have recommended Mirena as a safe and effective birth control mechanism for folks like you and me. It's ok to ask for advice and recommendations but keep in mind that nothing - absolutely nothing is 100%.

Here's my story: I am married, 39 years old and had the Mirena inserted in Feb. '09. Prior to that, I did not use any type of pill for birth control (married 18 years). The Mirena sounded like it was the best option for me and my busy life. In Nov. 09 - (yes 9 months later) I experienced weight gain and had no clue of the possibility of pregnancy. A postive pregnancy test was confirmed by me and my dr. (What a shocker!!!!) The initial evaluation was to check to see if the Mirena was still in place. The evaluation concluded that there was no Mirena to be found and that it must have come out of my vagina. This is called expulsion and I am a living witness that it happens. It took me almost 6 - 7 months to come to grips with the fact that I was pregnant and about to have baby #4 at 40 years of age (Oct. 18th). There is always a good side to every story, and in this story the good that has come out of it is the birth of my sweet baby girl. We cannot imagine life without her. She is such a blessing to our entire family.

Please do your research and make sure you look for positive and negative feedback. When I was doing my research, all the information I came across seemed to be positive and in favor of. After I got pregnant and looked for more information, I found more negative information from women who did not like the Mirena and became pregnant or experienced other complications.

I just recently had a tubal ligation and everything seems to be fine.

Do your research but be prepared for the possibilities. :)

Have had Mirena now for 5 years and am planning on having a new one put in next month. It has been wonderful. No periods for me at all and no side effects. I couldn't ask for better birth control. And my insurance company paid 100% of the cost to have it put it, which is even better.

I have the Paraguard IUD and have never had any problems with it. It was a bit painful having it put in, but not bad. The only problem I have is that since Paraguard has no hormones in it, my periods are heavier now than they were on birth control.

Hello! I had my daughter Aug. 31st of 2007. After having her, my dr. asked what I wanted to do. We waited until we were really ready for children, and don't want to rush them together. Take our time with our first! I had the IUD Mirena inserted about a month after having her. It has been great! I don't have to worry about remembering to take the pill, which is what I did for years, or mess with condoms anymore. I had some unpredictable periods at first, but they have become normal and steady again. (That only lasted about 6-8 months). I had fairly normal & regular periods before having my daughter, so not sure if this has had anything to do with my easy time with it. Good Luck!

W.,
I got Mirena 6 weeks after I had my son. The ob/gyn visit was painless and quick. I LOVE it. My doctor even said more than half of the women that get it, get it just to stop/slow down their periods. My periods were a little irregular the first 3 months, but last month, (month 4 of having it it) my period lasted less than one day! My husband says he cannot feel it. And it's not very easy for it to "fall out" and you would definitely notice it. And the best part (one of them anyways) is that it is immediately reversible. As soon as you do want to start having children again, you don't have to go through that waiting period to be able to again. Mirena - highly recommended!! Good luck!

After my son was born in Feb, I faced your same decision. I'm not very good with a pill, that's how my first got here, and I had complications with Nuvaring (side effects from the hormone) and that's how my second got here. So, I opted for the Mirena IUD. It only has a small ammount of hormone, so my Dr. thought I would do ok with it. However, I'd had it for a couple months before I started having side-effects. I've talked to several of my friends, and even aquaintences who've had it, and many of them have had headaches with it, or other mild side effects (like their belly bloated). I however had almost every side effect you could have... headaches, loss of energy, no sex drive, constipation, hair loss, bloating... All things that I wouldn't have thought were the IUD, and what Dr's told me weren't, but I had it removed last month, and all of that has been resolved-- go figure!! I also had a migraine so severe that I was in the hospital for 3 days because along with it came stroke symptoms, scary. Since I've opted for the paraguard IUD-- no hormones, and so far it's been great. The only difference with this one vs. Mirena is it sometimes causes heavier periods, with the Mirena, they are very light, and sometimes eliminated altogether. I wish the Mirena had worked for me. I like the idea of a shorter, lighter, or non-existant period. However, I also wish someone had told me what kind of side-effects there were. I thought I was going crazy for a while. I would suggest looking up online some more info, just to see what's out there. I found that there were a lot of women that had complications with it. I wish I had known before hand. Hope that helps!

Hi W.. I also have the Mirena IUD, I got it placed six weeks after I had my second dd. I love it, I've had very few problems with it. Placement is somewhat uncomfortable. I no longer get a period which I think is great! God bless and congrats on the new bundle of joy!

After the birth of my last child, 7yrs ago, I had an iud put it, the mirena. I loved it, no side effects, no issues, even easier periods after about 3 months.I had a second one put in 5.5 yrs later had it until I had a partial hysterectomy 2 months ago. (Not related to iud!) They r wonderful. It works 2 ways, first it has a very low dose of bc in it, plus iud's naturally keep you from getting pregnant bcause they are a forien object in your uterous, your body naturally won't allow pregnancy. Good luck! P.S. My oldest 2 are a year and 10 days apart. It has been a wonderful experiance. They are best friends.
