Hellp Mommas,

My son, who is 3 1/2, has had a fever since Sunday afternoon. It starts low through the first part of the morning and then by the evening it has reached as high as 103.5. I have been letting the fever do it's job to a certain degree, like when he stops playing and is only lying around telling me his head hurts. Then I know it is making him uncomfortable and I have switched between the motrin and tylenol. The fever then goes down, but as soon as the meds wear off, it is right back up. His pedi said to give it another day yesterday, but so far it is only 100.1 and he has been playing and running around al morning.

I am just not sure what I should do. I think it will go back up again this evening, but not sure since this is the 4th day. He also has NO other symptoms like runny nose or cough or trouble breathing. Hubby says I should take him in cause he is worried about swine flu, but I keep thinking one more day cause he has been fine so far this morning, just like the past 3 mornings. ANy thoughts on what this could be mommies? I am open to all suggestions. TIA

What can I do next?

My 4 yr old has had something similar going on since Saturday. Spiked a 102, then Sunday 103, then went away Monday morning when we took him to the dr (our daughter just had strep, so we thought it might be that...). Doc said it's just a virus and that she's seen a lot of this random fever lately. His temp came back up to 101 or so Mon evening, then went away again Tues morning. We thought it was gone yesterday, but he went to bed with a 100.4 or so. He's had these random viruses before, and they can take 5 or so days to run their course. It's very frustrating! We're hoping that today -- day FIVE -- is the end of it! Luckily, it seems to be getting a little better each day.

The flu is an upper respiratory thing, so if he's not coughing, flu is not likely. You can check out the symptoms and info at www.flufacts.com.
Strep is a possibility, but that's also really painful, and the fever stays high instead of bounces around, and he would be very sad and wouldn't eat or drink much.

That said, 5 days of fever is probably worth a phone call to the doc if you're worried.
They can at least give you some parameters, like if he still has a fever after X days, or developes X symptom to come in.

Hi C.,
My son just had a random fever virus as well. We had a 102 that wet to 99 for 24 hrs, a few days later the same thing and then a few days later a fever of 101 with vomiting. SO strange as he rarely gets a fever. I freaked and took him for a cbc and a lyme test as well as urinalysis. All were fine and they said just a fever. Yet this was 11 days with 3 fevers. Also, no other symptoms but the throwing up in the last fever. This is all so strange...I was wondering swine flu as well yet they are supposed to have a cough with it. Who knows! But there is something spreading like wildfire! Hope your son feels better!

I would go to the Dr.

I do agree that if the fever hangs around 100 and not higher, then another day might be ok to wait. NO WAY, would I wait if my daughter had a 103.5 fever. Something is going on to make him have the fever.

I'm not that concerned (maybe I should be) about the swine flu. We are just washing our hands a lot and using the gels when soap and water is not available.

Best wishes, I hope he gets better fast!

if he had fever is because he has infection the body response to infection is fever so i am sorprise that you pedi said another day and not do another test ,when my son has only fever the doctor do a lot of test to find the infection but usually no longer than 2 days with fever ,take him to the doctor or the e.r
