Look at the active ingredients on the mucinex bottle. If it doesn't already have ibuprofen in it, then yes, you can.
(I'm pretty sure that mucinex doesn't have a pain reliever and that it's ok to give it. But I don't have any in my house to check and be 100% sure, so you should check).

Call a pharmacy (Walgreens, CVs...) and ask them to be safe, but I tend to agree with mynewnickname... Check the ingredients.
If you can't contact a pharmacy, the bottle should have a free hotline you can call with questions. Or, could call your pediatrician and ask the on-call nurse. (If yours doesn't have one, just call random pediatricians from the phone book until you reach one that does. They are usually willing to answer anyone's questions.)

Ibuprofen and Motrin and Advil are the same thing.
Tylenol and Acetaminophen are the same thing.
Musinex, Tussin, Robotussin, and more are ALL the exact same drug. Guaifenesin.
You need to read the list of ingredients ON ALL LABELS. Learn the names of ALL the meds both by their generic names and brand names, like Tylenol is actually Acetaminophen.
This will help you to be your child's advocate. You'll be able to know if the med you are giving your child is a mixture of various drugs. This is what was happening to the kids that died.
The articles I read on CNN stated that the parents were giving their kids cold meds which are mixtures of stuff like Sudafed, Guaifenesin, Acetaminophen, and Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide. Then they'd give their kid a dose of Tylenol or Motrin and it was an overdose because they had a full dose in that mixture cold med. That's what killed them. The parents didn't read the label and they gave them double the maximum dose of meds. So read the labels and learn the names that can be on a medication bottle.
There are more letters after the Tussin name such as Tussin DM, Tussin CF, and more. Each of these has a combination of medications WITH the Tussin med. They each can react with other meds.
Tussin AC is prescription med and it has a bunch of Codeine in it. That can't be mixed with ANY other meds without a specific specific discussion with the pharmacist. They are the PROFESSIONALS when it comes to any medication.
So over all, plain ordinary Tussin without any letters after the word Tussin should be completely fine with Tylenol/Motrin.
But if you are NOT sure and are NOT educated about each of the meds you are giving your child you need to pick up the phone and call your pharmacist.
