Female Spayed Adult Dog Question

Do adult female dogs have a weird time of the month or something where they have to pee a lot more suddenly? My dog seems to go through phases where she is just normal and fine, and then she starts licking her butt a lot and peeing in the house. I know she has peed in the house before because she was mad at me (i.e. we left her alone on vacation, or she wasn't getting walks when my kids were really sick), but I can't think of why she would be mad lately.

To add, it seems that she is leaking pee, not peeing with her leg up. She is a lab/german shephard mix.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all. I will take her to the vet. I think she has an infection or something.

Three possibilities:
1) She has a bladder infection and needs to see the vet.
2) Older, spayed female dogs leak pee for the same reason that post-menopausal female humans do and it's treated in much the same way - hormone replacement, either herbal or artificial. She needs to see the vet.
3) Both. And she needs to see the vet.

The question is whether she is squatting and having accidents in the house, or if she is truly incontinent (the urine just leaks out and is not within her control, especially at night or while she is sleeping). Sometimes some spayed female dogs develop a form of urinary incontinence that can be controlled with medication. Some dogs get urinary tract infections that require antibiotics. Some dogs have bladder stones that cause similar signs and x-rays are needed to diagnose them. Some dogs develop medical conditions that cause them to drink more water than normal, and then subsequently have to urinate more often or larger volumes. She will need a check up at the vet to help figure out what is going on. I would bring a fresh urine sample with you if you can catch some while walking her, and be prepared that the vet may want to run some bloodwork as well.

BTW, eliminating all medical causes, dogs don't pee in the house because they are mad, or seeking revenge. They really are not capable of such thoughts and behavior. Often it is stress because their routine has been disrupted in some way.

The first two things that come to mind are urinary tract infection or worms.

No, this is not normal. Even if a dog is spayed as an adult and not a puppy, this is not normal. I would see a vet.

Not a weird time of the month and dogs come into heat typically only every 6-8 months if they are not fixed. It is possible she has a UTI if she is going in the house. It could also be full anal glands if she licking and she is trying to empty them. That wouldn't explain the urine in the house though. Also try to decide if she is leaking when sleeping or not noticing she is going or if she is awake. There are other things it could be too. I would give your vet a call and take her in if possible.

Saw your update, dogs can have incontinence and there are several medications that can really help. Your vet may want to do an exam and urinalysis to check first and make sure that is not the issue.

No they do not. This is not normal behavior. I would think that this sounds like a bladder/kidney infection. Since she is licking alot it must feel uncomfortable to her. Some dogs have issues with anal glands but that would only cause the licking and maybe some scooting on the floor and a very foul odor. That wouldn't not cause the peeing on the floor. I think it would be worth a check up at the vets office.
Best Regards,
C.

My spayed adult female golden gets UTIs from time to time, she starts peeing more than usual. An antibiotic clears it up in a week.

Our lab use to leak a lot in the summer if she drank too much water. We changed up her food and also added cranberry to her diet incase of a bladder infection. We also made sure she got up and went out more, she started doing it more when her hips would bother her so we added glucoseamin (sp?) to her diet as well and it also helped. Is she leaking or just peeing? Our lab would leak a lot of fluid at once. If its not leaking then I am sorry but I guess I didnt help, good luck ((HUGS))

I agree with everybody else. This is worth talking to your vet about. There could be a medical problem that needs to be remedied.

We had a German Shepherd that we had for years and she just leaked. It was nothing that she could control. It seemed to get worse as she aged. The vet did have some pills that I could give her but they were a little spendy. I just kept her out a lot. It seemed to happen after she was spayed.

My 9-yr-old spayed lab mix was leaking a little urine in her sleep and the vet put her on DES, one pill per week forever. I guess it's something that happens to females as they age...both canine and human. The pills have worked completely.
