Feeling Stuck in Regards to Career Options

Hello

I am about to turn 47 years old. I have a seven year old and a two-year-old. For the last 20 years I have made my living working as an aesthetician. This is the only job skill that I have. When my first daughter was close to two I went back to work part time. It was a good balance and I had a very ideal schedule which most people in my industry don't usually have. It also seemed more manageable with just one child. After the birth of my second child I decided I would stay home for at least two years. I am now feeling that I need to return to work at least part-time for financial and personal reasons. My husband works very hard but unfortunately we are struggling a bit as a family of four on one income. Just to clarify I'm not wishing for fancy clothes or cars or vacations, etc. We are pretty sensible with our money but in the area we live in it doesn't go far and we are accumulating some debt. On one hand I love being a SAHM and on the other side I'm finding it quite difficult to be home all day. sometimes I feel a little depressed.

Challenge I'm having is I am really not wanting to go back to my previous career. It pays only commission and generally can take a year or more to build a clientele. There are some aspects of the job which are physically demanding and I'm feeling like I'm getting a bit old and tired to meet those physical demands. The other requirements are almost always that I would work some evenings and weekends. My husband already works some evenings and doesn't get home until 6:30 PM when he's not working evenings. In addition to his job he does freelance work which he needs to do at home away from distractions in the evenings and for a period time on the weekends. I would need a career or job that would allow me to work week days.

In summary, I'm feeling stuck I'm not really sure what other kind of career or job I could have.

I would appreciate to hear from people who have been in a similar position and what you did.

Thanks

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your great advice. I really like the idea of working in a local school. Last year I volunteered in my daughter's 1st grade class and enjoyed it. I just never thought it would be possible to get a job in a school with no prior experience or degree

My neighbor has done this for years and when I asked her about it she said the jobs are hard to come by or non existent due to the budget problems the state of California has. She said they have let go of people and added more work on to the existing people. After that I dropped the idea of pursuing it any further.

Does anybody know how I would begin to go about breaking into this field. I feel completely clueless. My world has become limited to raising kids

I've never done this before, but maybe try going to one of those career centers that places people in jobs. You can tell them what you are looking for and maybe they can find something that will be a good match. If someone else on here has tried a place like this, perhaps they can say how their experience was. My friend who was a SAHM for 10 years got an HR job for a local science research company. She works 9-4 and gets home about the same time as her kids (they ride the bus). She never did this before but it is going well. Another friend started teaching exercise classes at the YMCA and now teaches quite a lot of classes. A third friend started working in the bakery of the local grocery store and now she and another woman have teamed up and started a very successful catering business. They also offer cooking classes (her background before being a SAHM was a pastry chef). I applied for and got a part time job updating a company's website. They taught me how to use their website software and now I also write articles for them, press releases, put up publications, and I do editing. I'm just trying to give you some ideas. Think outside the box...look around where you live and think about all the different things you can do.

my mom is a secretary part time. weekday hours only. a daycare facility would be weekday hours and may need pt class assistants. schools are also a place to check about being a pt assistant.

The advice I give when asked about career choices is to first of all ask yourself what you love to do. You may throw in there what it is you excel at. Take a look at those things and see how you could do exactly what you love doing and making a living at it. The point being, if you love it you don't care how much it pays or don't mind doing it. If it's something you love, your creativity is heightened, your foresight is more accurate, and your thoughts will be focused. Once your thoughts are focused, the universe just seems to give you what you need to carry it out. Not an authority by a long shot, and I wish you luck in this decision.

Some of the community colleges have a test of sorts you can take to see where your interests/strengths/weaknesses lie so you can choose something that suits you. I would start there.

There are a number of sites you can use such as thumbtack.com to get business based on your schedule, if you'd like to continue your old work as an aesthetician. I'd also consider what is most important about work for you...salary, commute, flexibility. That will drive what type of work you would probably want to look for.

What about working as an Educational Aid for one of the local schools? or recess adult? Things like that are always during the day. Head Start is usually looking for good parents to work in the classrooms as well.

I would also take stock of what you can do that can translate to a different job. Can you input information into a database? Are you a good people person and have some computer skills? Do you like kids and would you want to work with them in some way - your child's school or district may have openings. What you might start with is a job and then parlay that into a career or at least getting your feet wet again. You can also check out sites like HireMyMom.com. Do you know a photographer who might benefit from your skillset? I have a friend who both does makeup for photo shoots and paints and welds set pieces for various productions. You might have to think outside the box...or make your own! ;)

ETA: You should go to the local districts' career page to see what schools need help and how. You may want to look beyond their actual school if there aren't any positions there. You can also consider substitute teaching. Some people turn that into a FT job, though you would need to clarify things like your availability b/c of daycare for the little one. You may also be able to find jobs at local preschools or private schools, or aftercare programs. The Y handles our before/after care and one person does AM and one does PM.

If you want to work in your local school district you need to look on their page to see if they have any non-professional job openings. They might not have any, or the budget for them.

If they do then you need to find out the qualifications for these jobs and submit applications. You can also substitute in many school districts up to a certain amount of days. This serves a couple of huge purposes.

1. You get some income coming in now.

2. You get where you are recognized by the admins of the schools you work in so when they have a position come open and see an application with your name on it they know who you are and your work ethic and attitudes and if they want you in their building full time.

I agree with the others. Look into jobs with the schools. I've known a couple of people who were out of the job market for years raising kids find part-time work through their local schools.
