Feeling like I Am on a Boat

I have felt like I am on a boat every time I stand up or walk around ever since yesterday afternoon. It isn't severe, like I can still walk in a straight line and go about my daily activities, it is just noticeable and causing me anxiety which probably makes it feel even worse. Just feels like I am floating a bit and is gone when I sit or lay down. Today is a little better than yesterday but it is still there. 2 of my kids have a mild cold right now (sniffles and cough), and I did feel very "Blah" on Friday with a slight sore throat and my head has felt heavy and tired for a few days. I have a ton of tension in my neck and back and my neck/shoulder blade area is pretty sore. We had a plumbing leak that flooded our ceiling and the walls had to be cut open etc so we are dealing with that so the weekend was pretty high stress. I was also out in the wind on Sat night and my ears were hurting a bit - they do not hurt now but every time I move my jaw around or try to yawn they are crackling like crazy but never "pop" if that makes sense. Of course last night I went hypochondriac and had myself convinced that I had a brain bleed or was having a stroke. I have never had dizziness in the past. I take vitamins with iron and I was not dehydrated. Took my BP and it was 118/75 so no problems there. Could it all be from the crackling in my ear, like there is fluid throwing off my equilibrium? I really don't want to go to the dr. because I feel like I will spend the $30 and they will just say, "Go to the ENT if it persists," but of course I will go if I have to. Really really trying not to google. At this point I don't know if I am actually dizzy or if my anxiety over it is just making me feel like I am. I have always had anxiety but never the dizzy feeling.

I've had this. It was caused by fluid in my ear. You have a cold and this is what's likely to be the cause. What the doctor had me do is take a decongestant. I like Sudafed, the original one. The newer one doesn't work as well for me.

Hydrogen peroxide won't help because the fluid is in the inner ear. The hp will only go to the outer ear.

No need to go to the doctor unless this lasts for more than a week.

I have problems with vertigo from time to time.... I feel like I am weaving when I walk, and sometimes I have to reach out for things. (The doctor has called it "Benign Positional Vertigo")

allergies and infections/viruses can set it off... as can sleeping in a strange position....

When it gets really bad, I've taken benedryl and laid back in a recliner for about 30-45 minutes until it kicks in... that really helps me. (There have been a couple of times that it was so bad I was nauseated....)

You need to go to the ENT. Whenever I feel that way I have infected adenoids. It will clear up on it's own in like a month if you don't go but you will feel better in two days if you go (be sure they stick that black tube up your nose and take a good look) and then take antibiotics.

The first time I had an adenoid infection I thought I was going insane. I was dizzy and it made me crazy. Now when I feel that way I go in immediately and yup - adenoid infection!

It's probably not Vertigo - it's more likely just an infection which causes Vertigo -like symptoms. The sore throat is one of the symptoms!

Feel better.

Definitely go get your ears checked. These feelings can be from pressure ono the ears and it does not have to hurt in the ear. A friend had this one time, felt like she was in a fog also. She went to a regular doc and got ear drops. After a couple of days she was fine. No ENT needed. Not saying one would not be needed though.

You have fluid in your ear and/or your sinuses are full of fluid. It never happened to me until I was in my late 30's - and if I got up from bed too quickly the room would spin!

Blow your nose and sinuses well. Get a netti-pot to clean out your sinuses. It seems really gross when you think about using it - but the resulting clear sinuses are AMAZING! I think I must have had chronically full sinuses and I never really fully smelled anything until the first time I used a netti-pot. Now as soon as there's any sign of a head cold or congestion I use it and the cold gets cleared. It ends up that I need to use it maybe once a Winter. The best $8 I've ever spent!

Good luck mama - it can be odd when it first happens but I think as we get older all kinds of wierd stuff can happen!

Yes, most likely from fluid in your ears. Look up Vertigo causes, but from what you've said, it's most likely your ears causing it. Try some hydrogen peroxide in your ears, leave in for at least 2 minutes each side, and then a few drops of rubbing alcohol to dry it up. If it continues, go to doctor.

Get your ears checked. If you have a cold or sinus infection or anything like that, you can have fluid behind your ears and you'll feel funky.

That is Vertigo you are experiencing. If can get a LOT worse...

You need to go to an ENT to make sure your inner ear is healthy. If you have Vestibular neuritis (the hairs in the inner ear gets messed up). They will give you a prescription strength dramamine (Mechlizine).

If you have crackling in your ear - you may have a ruptured ear drum. There are sooo many possibilities...just go to your ENT and find out what is wrong.

Sounds like Vertigo. My husband gets this, different things will set it off. Even lifting weigths while he in laying on his back can trigger vertigo. I will usually last a few days to a week for him. During that time he has to sleep with his head elevated quite a bit and try to be careful about not turning his head too quickly etc.
Sorry, you are getting this. I have had days too when I will get this and it is quite annoying and sometimes nausiating. I dont get it to the degree my husband does too.
Could also be an ear infections too, making your internal balance off. Wouldnt hurt to go to the doc to rule out an ear infection. Otherwise I bet it is just vertigo and docs will tell you "some people just get that" and then you can take some meclazine.

Hi,

I just had this. After 2 general doctor visits I went to the chiropractor for something else, and mentioned my ears, she asked if she could try to help. Of course I said yes and one, two three, better. Tricks she taught me: gentle tugs on the ear, from the lower lobe tug down and out and from the top pull up and out while opening and closing the jaw. It really helped when the feeling started to come back. This mixed with the trick a wonderful flight attendant taught me have really saved me. Okay, this one sounds weird but did help me, especially on airplanes where the cabin pressure mixed with the ear pressure made me think my head would explode: take a short tea cup or small bowl, like the ones found on planes and put a napkin or paper towel at the bottom, pour boiling water on to the napkin and place the cup with the hot wet cloth up to the ear with the head sideways (so the hot water does not pour into the ear and down the face), create a seal with the cup flat on the side of the face, completely around the ear. Stay there for a while. The steam in the cup and the suction create a reverse release on the pressure in the ear. There is a fuller scientific reason this works, I don't understand it, nor do I need to. It has helped me out many times and I am grateful.

Remember to breath in and out, stress only makes everything look and feel worse. Assume the least not the worst, your kids have a cold, you got it and it settled in your ears. Try some of the advice given here and then if it is still bothering you before the weekend go to an Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor. Some things do clear up and others get worse if ignored. Remember, by taking care of yourself rather than ignoring it and hoping it will go away, you actually will be a better mother and wife, because if you are not well you can't fulfill your responsibilities to the best of your ability. By taking care of yourself and your body and soul, you are actually taking care of your family, giving them healthy you, not spinning, not feeling well you.

Good luck and feel better soon.

Sounds like the inner ear infection a dear friend of mine had last year. She kept ignoring the feelings of dizziness she was having and when she finally couldn't take it anymore, (she fainted at church, her equalibrium was shot) she went to her doctor who tried to treat her with an antibiotic, followed by two more. He finally had to refer her to an ENT, who treated her for another 6 months, it took her about 13 months total to get the infection cleared, then the fluid gone. She couldn't drive for much of that time from the constant problem of wooziness and losing her equalibrium.

I know you don't want to spend the $30, but we're not doctors. If it gets worse then your productivity in caring for your family takes a hit. The cracking in your jaw could be a reaction to stress or anxiety, with the plumbing problem and sick kids that's a definite possibility. If it persists and continues to bother you go to the doctor.

Oh, you're probably not having a brain bleed or stroke. A friend's wife had a brain bleed, she kept saying her head hurt and was slurring her words. When she collapsed he took her to the ER and they found a blood vessel had burst in her brain and was bleeding into it and did surgery. But he said the headache, word slurring and being barely able to open her eyes should have signaled to him it was serious (he's a doctor.) As far as having a stroke, if you haven't lost any mobility on either side of your body or noticed a difference in the way your face looks I think not.

yes a inner ear infection would cause vertigo. try some over the counter ear drops and see if that works. the excess cracking and tention is cause for consirne with the vertigo. make sure your eating healthy too. no diet sodas , no artifical sweetners, really healthy clean living. i would go to the doctor asap. tell him you cannot afford much with the plumbing eccess and are having a hard time. he might have some "samples" to allow you to try.

I feel like this often. It could be

anxiety
fluid in the ears
a trigger point/muscle issue (SCM muscle)

or maybe all three.

Calm down, stretch out the neck muscles gently. If its fluid, you may just have to run its course.

But above all, calm down. Anxiety about it makes it a million times worse...I know from experience.

#1 - You should NOT be in the home right now. You had a plumbing leak. It flooded your ceiling. The walls had to be cut open. This is NOT a good environment. This is probably WHY your kids are sick and why you are feeling sick. There is just way too much stuff floating around in the air right now and it is NOT good for you. We had a similar situation, and stayed one night, and my husband and daughter both woke up sick the next day. Knowing the house was the problem, we moved out until it was done. Our insurance paid for our hotel room. You don't know what kind of stuff is in the ceiling or walls. As it turned out, it was a good thing we left. There was asbestos in the walls.

#2 - If you do no believe my statement above, then it's possible you have vertigo. It can be caused by many many things. I have experienced vertigo, it usually lasts a couple of days, and for me, it's caused by flying. My friend has vertigo, we don't know why, and hers lasts anywhere from a few days to a week. If yours doesn't clear up, or gets worse, you might have it checked it out. You can google exercises on the internet to combat vertigo. They help a little.

Good luck.
