Feedback for Local Karate Lessons

Has anyone had any experience with karate lessons in Allen? We had gotten a flyer at the parade for Karate for Kids. They have a very inexpensive package for Christmas, but we don't really know anything about the business. I know Eagles Wings also has karate lessons. We've been there for gymnastics and know the general business is good, but don't know anything about the karate aspect. We are thinking about getting our 5 and 6 year old boys karate lessons for Christmas. Any feedback would be great! We are intrigued by Karate for Kids' offer since it is a short commitment and as I said, inexpensive...in case the boys decide they don't like it. Thanks in advance for your responses.

My son has gone to K4K, in Mckinney, for 2 years. He is 7 and he just got his black belt on 12/5. We love it there!

Hi T. ~

We also were intrigued by this Karate for Kids offer (their location in McKinney). My son began taking the trial offer of lessons & LOVED IT! The school is very good and all of their instructors are black belt certified. However, they do not/will not give you the costs if you want to continue until about 2-3 weeks into it...once your child has really immersed in it. They told me that they would schedule a meeting to discuss costs & options with me. They do move them through the white/first belt quickly so that by the end of the 4 week trial, they are ready to test for the next belt...and then you are hooked! It is extremely expensive after the trial offer! $119 per month plus $50 fees for testing for each belt and purchasing equipment after that such as sparring & "weapons". You also have to sign a long-term commitment. I DO love the school & what it is doing for my son...just be aware that it is very expensive to continue on!

Hope this helps!
L. :)

Hi T.! My son goes to the Karate program through the Allen Rec Dept. He loves it and it is very affordable Sifu Bales is awesome! Your kids are the perfect age my son is 6. Also, you are not locked into a contract you pay monthly. The classes are held at the Joe Farmer Rec center. The cost is 50 per month per child. I hope this helps.

I am not familiar with the 2 places you mention. However, my daughter studied with John Bain of Plano Self Defense.

He has excellent information on choosing a school on his website. www.planoselfdefense.com

SO many places out there are there to make $$$$. There are a lot of "belt factories" who will promote you as long as you pay.

My daughter started out in a school in Allen, (not one listed here) and we switched programs just 1 yr shy of her black belt because the management changed and it basically became "pay the money, test and get your belt". That is not the black belt she was working so hard to achieve. She was very disciplined and learned SO much from Mr. Bain. She started at 7 yrs old and she achieved her black belt from Mr. Bain (MAJOR hard work and a true black belt takes years) at age 12. To move from each degree you can be training up to 2 years per degree. This is not something that moves quickly. It takes a lot of hard work, determiniation, and perserverance on the child (and parent's) part.

Whatever you do, research. You should NOT be in contracts. Maybe your children will love martial arts. My daughter achieved so much more than just a black belt with her training.

Best wishes!
