Hello friends, I recently saw the movie Fat sick and Nearly Dead and I'm soooo interested in trying a juice fast like him. The movie is about a guy who gives himself 60 days to lose weight and he does it by completly cutting out "chewable" food and instead he drinks fresh and organic fruit and vegetable juice. In 60 days he manages to lose 82 lbs. And along the way he helped a truck driver lose 200 lbs in 10 months also by juicing. So my question is, have you ever done a juice only diet? i tried to use his website to get recipes and a a juicing plan, but the website sucks. Where should I start? how do I prepare for a juice fast? or do i just start cold turkey? How do I know what juices to make, to make sure I get all the essential vitamins/nutrients I need?Thank you all for any advice you may have.
p.s I forgot to mention I started Zumba 3 weeks ago, so I'm also exsersicing 1 hr a day 5 times a week.

p.s.s
I have never been a dieter, but I don't see how only eating fruits, veggies and some legumes, beans and nuts could be bad for my health? Aren't all the stuff that I WONT be eating the ones that are really bad for us? Someone mentioned I should get off the couch, I am working out an hour a day, I thought that was enough?

What can I do next?

I watched that movie as well and my husband and I got inspired to try a juice fast the next day. We decided to just try it for 4 days. I just finished the 4 day juice fast yesterday. I liked the fact that it felt like I was cleansing my body. Since breaking the fast yesterday - I've really only begun eating fresh fruits and vegetables since I feel like I've cleaned out my system and I don't want to "ruin" the fast by eating junk. So the fast may help to just get you on a healthy food kick.

In the mornings I would make some sort of fruit juice in the juicer...like watermelon, mint, stawberry, lime (just a squeeze). In the afternoon we'd do a lettuce/kale, cucumber, celery, apple, pear, lemon and ginger. I also really liked the beet, carrot, apple, and grape combo...I found lots of recipes on-line from youtube. It was called 101 juice fast recipes. Hope that helps...and I say try it for a few days and maybe it kicks you into healthier food habits as well!

Years ago when I started looking into weight loss I found out that juice has more calories than the fruit. a 4 oz glass of orange juice has 80 calories and a whole orange has only 40.
When you consume only juice you don't get any fiber or protein. You need protein to build muscle and your body needs fiber. I think you are much better off eating lots of fruits and veggies and limiting starch ( potatoes-rice- noodles ect) and moderate amount of meat. Use only fat free dairy and eliminate or limit desserts.

You really shouldn't exercise when you are on a juice fast - where will you get the energy you'll be burning in Zumba.

Plus - it sounds like a "get slim quick" scam and while you might lose a lot of weight quickly you are just as likely to put the weight back on as fast as you lost it.

I don't see anything wrong with juice fasting a day or two to "cleanse" but if you are going to work out you need to feed your body. You'd be better off looking at what you normally eat, figuring out where you can eliminate unnecessary calories and going from there. I cut out a lot of sugar last year and it was amazing - I totally lost my craving for it and my weight settled out and stayed level all summer. Of course I got back into eating sweets and fell off the wagon completely - but it was a good start.

A friend of mine did a juice fast but only for a week(she lost close to 10 lb I think) She just used the recipes that came with the juicer (oh and she said kale was the worst when juiced ......even though she loves kale) Also make sure you use organic fruits/veggies, you will be getting tons of chemicals into your body otherwise.

The only way to lose weight successfully is by living a healthy lifestyle. You can make many small changes in your diet. But they have to become habits that you stick with, kinda like brushing your teeth-That's a healthy habit, right? Diets fail because at the end of your weight loss there is no plan to keep off the weight you've worked so hard to lose. And exercising is great. But it's pretty impossible to lose weight by exercising alone. One pound equals about 3500 calories! If you burn about 100 calories walking/running a mile. You've got to put in a tremendous amount of effort to see results. I think it's pretty easy to get discouraged by unrealistic expectations. You made it a goal to Zumba. Next week make it a goal to change up your diet in some way. No dessert, booze, chips during the week. A sensible approach may be to journal what you are eating on the weekdays, being more careful of what you are eating. And then having some treats on the weekends. Good Luck.

He has a website that answers most of those questions, but you are right, the website is really crappy. You can get info on how to start and recipes online, you just need to search for it. Juicing diets have been around for a while. Once you are done with the diet, you really need to continue to eat healthy. Speaking to a nutritionist would be ideal, because every one's dietary needs are different. Anytime you do a fasting, diet like this, you should get a check-up with a Dr.

Other good documentaries with more information that you would likely enjoy and that offers even more info on eating healthy every day, is Food Matters and Forks vs Knives.

I know you may not want to hear this but cut calories, get active skip all the diets. I realize that everyone's bodies are different but some of these diet "schemes" aren't healthy and most likely setting you up to gain all the weight back. I am blessed with a slim figure but if I am not active the weight will start to show. Just be active, get off the couch and cut the calories. Talk to your Doctor first to ensure your body can handle the weight loss program you are looking into. It needs to be healthy and physically worth the effort as opposed to a quick fix diet.

You will lose weight if you take in fewer calories than you were. There are 3500 calories (approximately) in a pound. If you currently eat 2500 calories per day, but cut it down to 1500 per day, you will lose 2 lbs in one week (i.e. negative 7000 calories per week = 2lbs). Most people dont realize how many calories they actually consume - thats why most diets want you to journal everything (including condiments/dressing etc.).

Here is the thing - you will lose weight on the juice diet if you dont over do it on juice (juice is VERY high in calories), but it is not a long term solution (you can not do this diet for the rest of your life, it is not practical), but it might give you the motivation you need to really start watching food intake etc. and maintain a healthy life style.

I have lost 100 pounds, so i know it is tough. I eat 1000-1200 calories a day, drink 60 ounces of water, and eat 50+ grams of protein and minimize carb intake. I can live with this diet forever - there is nothing I "cant" have and I splurge now and then (birthdays/holidays etc.) but trying to get that much protein in only 1000 calories forces me to make better choices on lean meat etc.

I also work out 3-5 times a week. Again, do what works for you...so you stick with it.

Good Luck!

I try to have a juice meal/snack once or twice a day. Then I also have been trying to eat a lot more salads and raw veggies. One easy recipe - celery, carrot, apple. Also parsley, carrot, beet. Just clean out your fridge - go to the library for books with other recipes, check out recipes on line too.
All things in moderation - listen to your body!
Good luck!

These guys aren't doctors, that I'm aware of. to be clear, the guy suggests doing a juice fast for a WEEK. It's a FAST...not a diet.

When you stop the juicing diet, what happens when you bring back in the things you don't eat? Meat, fish, any carbs, ANYTHING you don't eat on the diet? You gain weight. Research, science, doctors, nutritionists...for years and years have agreed...the only healthy way to get weight off and KEEP it off (avoiding unhealthy yo-yo weight) is to eat correctly and exercise. It's really not very coon to keep weight off that you loose quickly. Shoot, even people who get gastric bypass and staples are going back to get the surgery again. Why? Because, it's VERY difficult to keep weight off that you loose rapidly.

Learn how to eat correctly and healthily. (If you are exercising an hour a day and not seeing any difference in weight, you don't know how to eat right.) Keep exercising. How long did it take you to put on the weight? Then, allow your body some time to get it off.

Just start! You can pick up info as you go along the way. Read lots of books, read info on the internet, personal testimonies, etc. Make sure you're adding supplements. Sounds like you have a great idea and you're not into fad dieting, so I think it sounds wonderful if you can commit.

Good luck!
